“The Meno”

Discuss the article in your groups and review any questions or answers. You may want to discuss your questions (especially the

ones that were confusing). You may also want to discuss these questions:

Were you “bewitched, enchanted…at [your] wit’s end?...[your] soul and tongue torpid” (Plato 9)? HINT: “Torpid” means lethargic.

Why should we be perplexed? Why should we try to perplex others?

What was the experience of the Socratic dialogue? How do you ask such great questions?

HONORS: Discuss your Honors questions for the article.

Socratic Seminar: Classical Education

This Socratic Seminar is a unit test over the material covered in our Classical Education Summit.

You are to discuss: Terrance Moore’s “A Classical Education for Modern Times,” John Agresto’s “The Suicide of Liberal Arts,” Sir Ken Robinson’s “Changing the Paradigm,” Plato’s “The Meno”

Why? To reach some greater understanding about education.

For this preparation assignment, you must write a question for each text. You must also answer your own question with a thoughtful response AND a quote to support your claim. The Socratic Seminar is worth 60 points.

CLASSICAL EDUCATION SOCRATIC SEMINAR

Sit in a circle where you can make eye contact with everyone in the group.

Have your preparation assignments in front of you. Check yourself to make sure you are maintaining a

balance between talking and listening. You may certainly check others in the discussion as well.

Use your question stems when there is an awkward silence in the discussion.

Use quotes to support your arguments. If you interrupt each other, remember to say “and

what were you going to say, ?” after you finish.
