Ornithology: A Marvelwood Hallmark
Marvelwood is one of only three high schools in the nation to offer a year-long course in ornithology. Students observe birds in their natural habitat and have documented more than 87 species that breed in or migrate through northwestern Connecticut. Students operate bird- banding stations under the guidance of the Institute for Bird Populations and collaborate with the Connecticut Department of Environmental Protection to maintain a colony of purple martins, an endangered species.
Twice each year, Marvelwood students travel to Panama and the Cocobolo Nature Reserve to monitor the habits of migratory species, research the country’s native birds and reptiles, and take part in service projects that benefit the local communities.

Service: A Way of Life at Marvelwood
marvelwood’s dedication to community service extends back to the earliest days of the School. Each Wednesday morning is devoted to regional community service projects including clearing trails at the audubon center, maintaining equipment at the Kent Firehouse, and working with children at local nursery schools. other special projects include preparing and serving lunch at the Kent Senior center, hosting a Princess tea Party for the make-a-Wish Foundation, participation in cRoP Walk and domestic Violence awareness Week, anti-bullying initiatives, and clothing drives. Every spring, marvelwood’s Senior Service trip—a culminating experience for marvelwood’s soon-to-be-graduates—provides seniors with valid and tangible proof of their potential to make a difference in the lives of others.
