The march 2014 Newsletter for First UMC Family and Friends First United Methodist Messenger Rockingham, NC A Message from Rev. Allison Farrah As we begin another Lenten journey, I encourage us to remember that Lent calls us into a purposeful time of sober reflection, self-examination, spiritual redirection and confession. In this sacred season, may we retreat with Jesus into the wilderness for a time of contemplation, reflection, and preparation. I invite us to take a look at our true selves and listen to the voice of the Holy Spirit calling us from habits that no longer work for us, and sins that separate us from our Heavenly Father- The one who loves us and is calling us to experience abundant life through the living Christ, our Lord and Savior. May these words of Max Lucado center us and help us to ponder the things that truly matter as we step into this Lenten journey together. For the next twelve hours I will be exposed to a new day. It is now that I must make a choice. Because of Calvary, I am free to choose. And so I choose. I CHOOSE LOVE… No occasion justifies hatred; no injustice warrants bitterness. I choose love. Today I will love God and what God loves. I CHOOSE JOY… I will invite my God to be the God of circumstance. I will refuse the temptation to be cynical… the tool of the lazy thinker . I will refuse to see people as anything less than human beings, created by God. I will refuse to see any problem as anything less than an opportunity to see God. I CHOOSE PEACE… I will live forgiven. I will forgive so that I may live. I CHOOSE PATIENCE… I will overlook the inconveniences of the world. Instead of cursing the one who takes my place, I will invite him to do so. Rather than complain that the wait is too long, I will thank God for a moment to pray. Instead of clinching my fist at new assignments, I will face them with joy and courage I CHOOSE KINDNESS… I will be kind to the poor, for they are alone. Kind to the rich, for they are afraid. And kind to the unkind, for such is how God has treated me. I CHOOSE GENEROSTIY… I will go without a dollar before I take a dishonest one. I will be overlooked before I will boast. I will confess before I will accuse. I choose generosity. I CHOOSE FAITHFULNESS… I will keep my promises. My debtors will not regret my trust. My associates will not question my word. My spouse will not question my love. And my children will never fear that their mother/father will not come home. I CHOOSE GENTLENESS… Nothing is won by force. I choose to be gentle. If I raise my voice may it be only in praise. If I clench my fist, may it be only in prayer. If I make a demand, may it be only of myself. I CHOOSE SELF-CONTROL... I am a spiritual being… After this body is dead, my spirit will soar. I refuse to let what will rot, rule the eternal. I choose self-control. I will be drunk only by joy. I will be impassioned only by my faith. I will be influenced only by God. I will be taught only by Christ. I choose self-control. Love, joy, peace, patience, kindness, generosity, faithfulness, gentleness, and self-control. To these I commit my day. If I succeed, I will give thanks. If I fail, I will seek his grace. And then, when this day is done, I will place my head on my pillow and rest. A Message from Rev. Allison Farrah
As we begin another Lenten journey, I encourage us to remember that Lent calls us into a purposeful time of sober reflection, self-examination,
spiritual redirection and confession. In this sacred season, may we retreat with Jesus into the wilderness for a time of contemplation, reflection, and
preparation. I invite us to take a look at our true selves and listen to the voice of the Holy Spirit calling us from habits that no longer work for us, and
sins that separate us from our Heavenly Father- The one who loves us and is calling us to experience abundant life through the living Christ, our Lord
and Savior. May these words of Max Lucado center us and help us to ponder the things that truly matter as we step into this Lenten journey together.
For the next twelve hours I will be exposed to a new day. It is now that I must make a choice. Because of Calvary, I am free to choose.
And so I choose.
I CHOOSE LOVE…
No occasion justifies hatred; no injustice warrants bitterness. I choose love. Today I will love God and what God loves.
I CHOOSE JOY…
I will invite my God to be the God of circumstance. I will refuse the temptation to be cynical… the tool of the lazy thinker. I will refuse to see people as
anything less than human beings, created by God. I will refuse to see any problem as anything less than an opportunity to see God.
I CHOOSE PEACE…
I will live forgiven. I will forgive so that I may live.
I CHOOSE PATIENCE…
I will overlook the inconveniences of the world. Instead of cursing the one who takes my place, I will invite him to do so. Rather than complain that
the wait is too long, I will thank God for a moment to pray. Instead of clinching my fist at new assignments, I will face them with joy and courage
I CHOOSE KINDNESS…
I will be kind to the poor, for they are alone. Kind to the rich, for they are afraid. And kind to the unkind, for such is how God has treated me.
I CHOOSE GENEROSTIY…
I will go without a dollar before I take a dishonest one. I will be overlooked before I will boast. I will confess before I will accuse.
I choose generosity.
I CHOOSE FAITHFULNESS…
I will keep my promises. My debtors will not regret my trust. My associates will not question my word. My spouse will not question my love. And my
children will never fear that their mother/father will not come home.
I CHOOSE GENTLENESS…
Nothing is won by force. I choose to be gentle. If I raise my voice may it be only in praise. If I clench my fist, may it be only in prayer. If I
make a demand, may it be only of myself.
I CHOOSE SELF-CONTROL...
I am a spiritual being… After this body is dead, my spirit will soar. I refuse to let what will rot, rule the eternal. I choose self-control. I will be drunk
only by joy.

Mission Spotlight for March
Zimbabwe Orphans Endeavor - ZOE helps children out of poverty
Moving beyond traditional relief ministry, ZOE provides a comprehensive approach to transforming the lives of African
children orphaned by HIV/AIDS, war, disease, famine and other causes. The results are striking: within three years, the
children and youth who participate in ZOE’s Orphan Empowerment Program are self-sufficient, never needing to
depend on charity again. Support ZOE with your gifts.
ATTENTION YOUTH AND PARENTS!
It’s time to plan the annual beach retreat that all the youth are asking for. This retreat is for us to get away from our busy schedules of school,
home, and church so we can come together to renew our spiritual relationship with God and ourselves-a time we can grow closer to God and
grow closer as a youth group.
We are staying at Garden City Chapel and Retreat. We will leave Friday, May 2 at 4:30pm and return Sunday, May 4 about 5:00pm. Cost for
the trip will be non-refundable $75.00 plus I will send a letter out to the ones who sign up asking for food and/or other items that we will need
this weekend. We will need a few adult chaperones for this trip. Your cost will be $35.00, so if you are able to help that weekend, please let
me know with your non-refundable $35.00 by March 9.
We will need a minimum of 18 people to register for the beach trip by March 9 in order to reserve the building. If you plan to go, you will
need to RSVP with me with non-refundable $75.00 by Sunday, March 9. If we do not get the minimum number with money by March 9
we will not be able to do the beach retreat. Remember--we do not want any youth to miss out on this retreat because of finances,
scholarships are available.
Youth Summer Mission Trip is June 29-July 5 at Hinton Rural Life Center in Hayesville, NC
You will need to turn your $100 non-refundable deposit by April 6
Every day we will have morning worship service, a full day of mission work, and closing worship service. The mission camp
ends July 4th, but we are going to stay an extra day for site seeing, youth bonding, and celebrate 4 th of July.
The mission work could be painting, roofing, yard work, pulling potatoes, building porches, redoing bathrooms, etc.
The cost of the trip will be $380 which will cover:
Lodging plus extra night
Food (except lunch going up on Sunday, free time on Wednesday, dinner and free time on July 4 th, lunch coming home, and
spending money)
Work/building materials
Transportation
Our goal is to do fundraisers to help lower the cost of trip for you and/or even maybe raise enough money so that all you would have
to pay would be the deposit.
The youth will have the experience of being God’s hands and feet with working with families to help rebuild the lives or business.
The youth will be able to meet the families they are working with for the week along with other youth.
Call Mary Griffith with any questions or concerns. Be sure to get your $100 deposit to Mary by April 6. (Spaces are filling up
fast --- Remember: if your youth would like to go on the mission trip but cannot go because of finances, please call
Mary .)

BECAUSE OF YOU!
The youth would like to thank all of you for support-

with this fundraiser. We could not have done this
fundraiser without every ones help by sending/
bringing in items, inviting friends and family, help
with decorating, cooking, serving, singing, cleanup,
joining us for dinner, and more. Everyone enjoyed the
evening and I have received a lot of compliments
about the youth and the cooks! It was a
fun night for all!
