DOA SAFAR (TRAVEL PRAYER)
In the name of Allah, Most Gracious, Most Merciful
Praise be to Allah, the Cherisher and Sustainer of the Worlds,
and may peace be upon our Honourable Prophet and Messenger
(Muhammad Sallallahu ‘alaihi wasallam), his family and
companions. May peace be upon all of them.
In the name of Allah, we invoke His name as we embark on this
journey and even when we are at rest. For my Lord is Ever Forgiving,
Most Merciful, and no just estimate have they made of Allah, such
as is due to Him.
Glory be to Him who has brought this under our control, for we
could never have accomplished this by ourselves. And to our Lord,
surely must we return.
O Allah, we ask of You for goodness and piety on this journey, and
from our deeds that meet Your pleasure.
O Allah, lighten our burden on this journey and bridge the distances
between us.
O Allah, You are our companion on this journey and the Protector
for the family we leave behind.
O Allah, verily we seek refuge in You from this journey’s hardship,
from evil eyes and misfortune to befall our household.
And may the Grace of Allah be bestowed upon our leader,
Prophet Muhammad sallallahu ‘alaihi wasallam and his family
and companions.
And Praise be to Allah, the Cherisher and Sustainer of the Worlds.

THE MAN FROM U.N.C.L.E.
Guy Ritchie reboots the 1960s American TV series with style and panache.

With a movie that relies on an “odd couple” formula, the chemistry between Napoleon and Illya is paramount. Napoleon maintains his smooth, sly style by boasting a sophisticated, western charm (think Mad Men meets James Bond). On the other hand, his partner Illya sticks to his eastern roots and remains a firm staple of traditional, sober, no-nonsense brutality. These characters clash wonderfully. Though the relationship arc may be seen as predictable, the dynamic between Cavill and Hammer is fun and enduring. Alicia Vikander plays her part too. Though her character lacks the screen time that the main pair hold, Vikander is a refreshing change of
The swinging 60s seem to have it all; from ground-breaking politics to blossoming cultures, it was a time that embraced change and encouraged a new way to get things done. A cool attitude reigned and conservative measures were seen as outdated and awkward. This setup opens the door for slick espionage action with a dashingly fly style.
‘The Man from U.N.C.L.E’ is Guy Ritchie’s latest movie, an adaptation of the 1960s American TV series of the same name. The remake sticks to its origins by remaining in the early 1960s and entrusting CIA agent Napoleon Solo (Henry Cavill) and KGB operative Illya Kuryakin (Armie Hammer) with the brazen duties. The story follows the unlikely coupling as they must participate in a joint mission against a mysterious criminal organization which is working to proliferate nuclear weapons.
Ritchie has a solid bunch of movies which display his directing talent; the action-fuelled tone of Snatch, RocknRolla and Sherlock Holmes is certainly present in U.N.C.L.E. However, it’s important to recognise that Ritchie
maintains his dry humour throughout this espionage caper. This is a strong point of the movie. The outlandish action is paired with tongue-in-cheek wit, which makes the whole experience much more pleasurable. It’s a nice balance: one which results in excited anticipation.
pace. She doesn’t let the gigantic pair overshadow her presence (literally: they are very tall) and her part injects the story with a mysterious edge.
Considering Hollywood is currently preoccupied with superhero franchises and teen-dystopian dramas, it’s reassuring to see a leap of faith into a spy action-comedy. The movie Spy, which was released earlier this year, appeals to the kooky, post-modern crowd, but U.N.C.L.E. confidently works within the classic secret service spirit. The script doesn’t hold back any adrenaline: the action sequences constantly show the film’s commitment to providing fun and funny set pieces.
‘U.N.C.L.E’ succeeds in creating its own world for the audience. The production design, costumes and music pull you into a nostalgia-riddled era. Ritchie deserves praise for this attention to detail. Each scene is catered to a specific mood and gesture that encapsulates the world of the 60s. The world is believable, the action is brilliantly executed, and the whole sizzling style of the movie is so suave that it might just persuade you to buy a vintage suit and join the CIA.

01 Jason Bateman as Simon.
02 Joel Edgerton as Gordo (right)
01
The Gift tells the story of a married couple, Simon (Jason Bateman - Juno) and Robyn (Rebecca Hall - Transcendence), as they relocate to Simon’s hometown for a fresh start and to start a family. Shortly after moving in, Simon becomes reacquainted with an old school friend, Gordo (Joel Edgerton, who also wrote and directed The Gift). After a series of uninvited visits, along with some mysterious gifts from Gordo, we are given hints that the past he shares with Simon is not quite as uneventful as Simon makes out, and that it is more complex and troubling than he cares to remember. With a promotion under his belt – and hopefully a baby on the way before long - life seems sweet for Simon, but sometimes sleeping dogs won’t lie
and secrets of the past can become unwelcome gifts in the present.
Bateman gives a wonderful performance as Simon. He expertly shifts between being the bully, the charmer and the victim. He manipulates all those around him for his own gain, and it plays very lightly on his conscience. His arrogance is such that as his life spirals out of control we never feel any real empathy for him. As Gordo, Edgerton is understated and unsettling, unexpectedly revealing as much about his character as he conceals. We know he’s a victim, we know that these yet-to-be disclosed events have stunted him socially and hindered his progression in life, yet we never truly feel aligned with him.
Something about his supposedly friendly gestures to Robyn don’t feel innocent, they feel contrived and flooded with hidden agendas, and we soon come to learn that the boy who was once Simon’s puppet has grown up to hold the strings.
An edgy thriller, The Gift delivers a slow-paced, low-key suspense. Although it features a couple of great jumps, it mostly relies on its eerie sense of disquiet. As Gordo ingratiates himself with the family more and more, we know something isn’t quite right, a piece of the puzzle is missing. As we patiently wait to learn the history of events surrounding Simon and Gordo, we move closer and closer to the edge of our seats.
THE GIFT Life seems sweet for Simon, but sometimes secrets of the past can become unwelcome gifts in the present.

It’s hard to believe that a little over five years ago British singer/songwriter Ed Sheeran was a relative unknown to the music industry, trying to catch a break. With his humble beginnings gigging in pubs and clubs in southern England, the world has seen this 24-year-old from Framlington, Suffolk rise to become one of the most influential musicians in the industry today.
Manisha Tank from Talk Asia caught up with the multi-award-winning artist in Hong Kong whilst he was on the Asian leg of his latest world tour, and they spoke about the inspirations behind some of his biggest hits, how he feels about his place in the industry, his love of Bollywood movies, and his many adventures whilst he has been in Asia.
Sheeran discusses learning the guitar at the tender age of 11 after being inspired by one of the most influential guitarists of all time, Eric Clapton. Whilst still quite young, he decided to work towards making it in the music industry by going to London to play gigs, and even busking on the Tube.
Flash forward to 2015 and the groundbreaking musician has won over 46 awards, including the prestigious Songwriter of the Year award and four Brit awards, has been nominated for six Grammy awards, and has toured the world alongside superstar acts including The Rolling Stones and Taylor Swift, as well doing two of his own sell-out world tours. There seems to be no stopping the endearing
and refreshingly genuine artist who worked his way to the top of the charts through many years of hard work and sacrifice.
This honest and witty interview shows Sheeran in a very positive light – fans of the superstar will definitely love it. With his frank remarks about the music industry, Sheeran gives the audience a great insight into what it is like to strive for superstardom, even when it seems so far out of reach.
Sheeran also reveals that he is currently working on album three, so he really has no intention of resting on his laurels.

When writing about John Lennon I could fill a vast tome just on his wondrous lyrics, which were woven into some of the greatest pop songs Britain has ever produced, we could discuss how his philosophy to integrate music and society was unprecedented, we could talk about how he handled his public image with marketable perfection whilst in a battle of the ages against The Rolling Stones (another of the UK’s finest), or we could expound upon the astonishing impact of his social movements.
When speaking about legacy, one of Lennon’s outstanding attributes was
his ability to make music relevant in society, in a manner that made it more than decorative. Generations earlier, the likes of Muddy Waters and Howlin’ Wolf transformed music into a social movement tool. If Elvis Presley took the baton to make music popular across generations, then John Lennon
applied lyrics and actions to provoke discussion and debate whilst using music to influence different sub genres of rock n roll, planting seeds that would eventually grown into the likes of indie, alternative, electronic and more.
Lennon’s legacy is such that it is difficult to ever see it being topped in society’s eyes. He understood that music gives people voices, and he showed that to society, which is one of many reasons why he was, and still is, beloved. This year would have seen Lennon turn 75. He’s gone, but he’ll never be forgotten.
JOHN LENNON“... John Lennon

discussion and debate...”
