May 2017 Volume 10, Issue 5 What is a SUPERAGER? The New York Times published an article on December 31, 2016 entitled “How to Become a ‘Superager’.” The article, written by Lisa Feldman Barrett, is an insightful look into the reason some people decline in mental capacities, while others remain mentally sharp. She and her colleagues at Massachusetts General Hospital studied “Superagers,” a term identified by neurologist Marsel Mesulam. Superagers are seniors whose memories and attention are above average for their ages and more in line with that of a healthy 25-year old. What did they find? The entire article is enclosed for your reading pleasure, but a few key points include the following: The crucial regions of the brain for superaging are not the “cognitive” regions, but the “emotional” regions. Boost your “emotional” brain capacity by working hard at something. Really hard. Difficult physical or mental tasks will build these regions of the brain. Working hard (physically or mentally) is exhausting, but it is important! Push through the pain. Reach! This builds memory and the ability to pay attention with age. As the Center designs programs to build the mind, body and spirit of our clients, we will use this article as a guidepost. Our slogan for our fiscal year 2018 will be “We are in the business of building Superagers!” We hope you will join us on this journey. Push yourself to do things that you wouldn’t normally do. What is a SUPERAGER?
The New York Times published an article on December 31, 2016 entitled
“How to Become a ‘Superager’.” The article, written by Lisa Feldman
Barrett, is an insightful look into the reason some people decline in mental
capacities, while others remain mentally sharp. She and her colleagues at
Massachusetts General Hospital studied “Superagers,” a term identified by
neurologist Marsel Mesulam. Superagers are seniors whose memories and
attention are above average for their ages and more in line with that of a
healthy 25-year old.
What did they find? The entire article is enclosed for your reading
pleasure, but a few key points include the following:
The crucial regions of the brain for superaging are not the “cognitive”
regions, but the “emotional” regions.
Boost your “emotional” brain capacity by working hard at
something. Really hard. Difficult physical or mental tasks will build
these regions of the brain.
Working hard (physically or mentally) is exhausting, but it is
important! Push through the pain. Reach! This builds memory and the
ability to pay attention with age.
As the Center designs programs to build the mind, body and spirit of our
clients, we will use this article as a guidepost. Our slogan for our fiscal year
2018 will be “We are in the business of building Superagers!” We
hope you will join us on this journey. Push yourself to do things that you
“I’d be lost without the transportation bus.” Bea, 88 Bea uses the bus several times a month to attend activities at the Center (50’s Dance pictured) and for medical appointments.
