Gil Family Estates owns or controls approximately 1,766 hectares (4,364 acres) of vineyards throughout their eleven wineries physically scattered across ten different D.O.s, Protected Designations of Origin, in Spain. Each winery has its own personality perfectly defined but working in excellent unity with the rest. Gil Family Estates has unwavering focus on indigenous terroir-driven wines of outstanding value.

The first winery, Bodegas Juan Gil, was founded in 1916 when Juan Gil Giménez, a stone mason and great-grandfather of the present generation, established the winery in the heart of Jumilla. Over 100 years of winemaking history, spanning five generations of continued family ownership, included a laborious restructuring of the family business and led to the company’s rebirth into a global wine powerhouse. All of the wineries under Gil Family Estates are currently run by brothers, Miguel and Ángel Gil.

Since 1999, the rapid ascension of Gil Family Estates has been built upon an absolute commitment to seemingly risky wine investments in outlier appellations. These bets have paid off. Today, the Family continues their focus on old-vine vineyards of indigenous varietals and the prioritization of sustainable farming (organic, dry-farming). This focus, coupled with their investment in technology, reduces the winery’s impact on the environment and results in the production of higher quality wines.

The Gil Family Estates portfolio of wines is sold in over 40 countries and distributed in all 50 U.S. states

AGING 12M | French Oak

SOILSand and Limestone

TASTING NOTES Intense, dark, high cherry-colored robe with a ruby rim and some violet tinges. Aromas of juicy black fruit and red fruit with creamy notions of spices, vanilla, toffee and mocha. Powerful and lush with intense notes of black fruit with a touch of menthol, dry earth, violets, chocolate, dried herbs and spices. Well-balanced, with a lively acidity, ripe tannins and a very long, fruity finish.

VINEYARDSBodegas Atalaya was founded in 2007. The Garnacha Tintorera, aka Alicante Bouschet, is one of the few grape varieties with red flesh. The vineyards are located in Almansa, around 3,280 feet above sea level, planted in sandy soils with a high lime concentration in the base. The grapes are separately fermented in stainless steel tanks. The wine ages for 12 months in French oak barrels producing a complex wine.

TASTING NOTESDensely colored wine with an impressive, impactful nose. Spice, cedar, toast and chocolate are layered with blackberry and plum. The palate has juicy ripe plum and a textural earthy chocolate sensation. Tannins build to the finish. A complex wine with great balance, concentration and length.

VINEYARDSThe flagship wine, Juan Gil Silver Label, is made with EU certified organic Monastrell grapes from over 40-year-old vines. The chalky and rocky limestone soils, poor in nutrients, are ideal to grow the Monastrell varietal. The vineyards are low yielding producing about 1.04 tons/acre. The Gil family uses progressive winemaking techniques including laser optic sorters after grape harvest to ensure the best fruit is selected. The wine is then aged for 12 months in French oak before bottling.

SOILGravel and Sand

TASTING NOTES Deep purple color with glass staining tears. Intense, concentrated aromas of blackberry and plum with some enticing notes of spice, leather and cedar. The palate is rich and lavishly juicy up front, silken in texture with a good balance, and black fruit jam is framed by ripe and well-integrated tannins. VINEYARDSThe Tempranillo grapes for this wine are from very old vines of up to 100 years, trained in the traditional “vaso” system, and produce very low yields. These vineyards are generally planted on a top layer of gravel over very sandy soils. The fermentation is carried out in stainless steel tanks and then moved to French oak barrels for a period of 15 months.

VINEYARDSFounded in 2016, Rosario Vera is the newest winery from Gil Family Estates. It is located in the town of Laguardia in the D.O.Ca. of Rioja, Spain. The area was chosen because of its proximity to the Sierra de Cantabria, isolated from maritime influence. Rosario Vera’s vineyards consist of small plots, planted 15 to 60 years ago. Calcareous clay soils, the climate, as well as high altitude make a perfect place to grow vines and obtain high quality grapes.
