Macenko’s Legacy: The Inspiration for this Project… Jerusalem Matins of Great and Holy Saturday - traditionally sung on Friday evening - is generally acknowledged as one of the most aesthetically beautiful services prayed during Lent - the Great Fast. Originating in the earliest years of Christianity, over the centuries this prayer has gone through many successive changes in both the Byzantine and Roman Rites. Some fifty years ago, Dr. Paul Macenko then the choir leader at the Ukrainian Redemptorist Fathers’ St. Vladimir’s College at Roblin, Manitoba, compiled a version that has been adopted and, in some cases, adapted to meet local needs by several choir leaders throughout the Winnipeg Archeparchy, including Mr. Walter Zulak, a student of Dr. Macenko’s while at Roblin. Today, as a result, one finds strands of Macenko’s Jerusalem Matins scattered throughout a number of publications. Mr. Zulak has collated the divergent pieces into a coherent whole. He anticipates that this rendering will better facilitate the performance of this liturgical masterpiece by the choir and, in so doing, increase audience appreciation and enjoyment. Dr. Macenko’s enthusiasm and professional approach to choral singing inspired students at St. Vlad’s and their friends to continue inspiring congregations around the province to the present day.

The text tries to preserve the rendering of the Ukrainian language and the abridgement of the service used in Dr. Macenko’s original adaptations. This booklet follows the bilingual language pattern now used by the Macenko Choir for this service. However, to help readers to better appreciate the often striking words of the verses, additional English translations have been provided in places.

Aside from Walter Zulak, the Choir is frequently conducted by Michael Zakaluzny. The funeral dirges usually sung by Ron Lukie are also

performed by guest soloists such as Paul Bakan. The Machenko Memorial Choir, gratefully acknowledges Crystal Novicki

and Carlene Deptuch of Holy Eucharist Parish, for their assistance in reprinting this booklet.

OFFICE OF THE BURIAL OF JESUS CHRIST The Office of the Burial of Christ is a meditation on the Savior’s entombment and on his descent into Hades to save the souls of the just and open for them the gates of heaven. It is marked throughout with faith and hope, since the time Christ remained in the tomb is seen by Christians as a period of refreshing sleep after the sufferings of the Passion, and as a prelude to the victory of the Resurrection.

The Angel appeared to the myhrr-bearing women near the tomb and said: “balsam is appropriate for the dead, Christ is free from decay.”

We praise you, I Christ the Giver of life, Who suffered and was buried for us yesterday and gloriously gave life to the dead.

O Christ, O Life, You experienced death and You liberated mortals from death and to all, You grant life today.

O Word of God,! Oh my joy! How will I endure Your burial? Today my

O life-bestowing Lord, it is right to glorify You, for You demolished the gates of hell and brought the devil to ruin.

Блаженні непорочнії, ходящії в законі Господні. Cantor: Як зайшов Ти в могилу, Сотворителю світу, то з Тобою й світло сонця зайшло, а все творіння затряслося провіщаючи, що Ти є всього Творець.

When You descended into the grave, O Creator of the world, the light of the sun went with You and all creation shook as it

announced that you are the Creator of all. Choir: Блаженні непорочнії, ходящії в законі Господні. Cantor: Behold the disciple whom you loved and Your mother, O my child, and say at least one word of consolation. The Blessed Mother tearfully cries out.

Bodily You descended into the earth, O unfathomable Light, the sun could not gaze upon this, but became

Look upon me and have mercy on me as You have compassion on those who love Your name.

Блаженні непорочнії, ходящії в законі Господні. Cantor: You slept for only a short time and replenished life to the dead and when You resurrected You restored life to all the dead, O Merciful One. Today with hymns we the faithful honour Your crucifixion and our burial, O Christ, because by Your interment

Seeing You dead, the Blessed Virgin, as a Mother cried: “O my beloved spring, my Son, where has your beauty gone?”

The One who once covered the oppressive-tormentor with the waves of the sea, is now buried by the children of those who were saved, but we

like children sing to the Lord: Glorious for He exhibited grandeur!.

At the beginning of the incensation, the deacon, stands before the principal Icon of the Mother of God, and sings:

Deacon: Богородицю і Матір Світла в піснях з звеличаймо. Choir: Не ридай по мені, Мати, бачачи у гробі Сина, що Його в утробі безсіменно зачала єси: устану бо і прославлюся, і піднесу із славою, на завжди, як Бог, тих, що з вірою і любов’ю Тебе величають.

Do not lament over me, O Mother, as you see in the grave the Son whom you conceived in your womb without seed. For I will rise and be

glorified and I, as God, will gloriously raise forever those who with faith and love extol you.

In instances where it is customary, the Holy Shroud is processed throughout the church. The processing signifies Christ’s walking

through Hades and waking up those who have died throughout the ages.

And he led me round among them; and behold, there were very many upon the valley; and lo, they were very dry. And he said to me, "Son of man, can these bones live?" And I answered, "O Lord GOD, thou knowest." Again he said to me, "Prophesy to these bones, and say to them, O dry bones, hear the word of the LORD. Thus says the Lord GOD to these bones: Behold, I will cause breath to enter you, and you shall live. And I will lay sinews upon you, and will cause flesh to come upon you, and cover you with skin, and put breath in you, and you shall live; and you shall know that I am the LORD." So I prophesied as I was commanded; and as I prophesied, there was a noise, and behold, a rattling; and the bones came together, bone to its bone. And as I looked, there were sinews on them, and flesh had come upon them, and skin had covered them; but there was no breath in them. Then he said to me, "Prophesy to the breath, prophesy, son of man, and say to the breath, Thus says the Lord GOD: Come from the four winds, O breath, and breathe upon these slain, that they may live." So I prophesied as he commanded me, and the breath came into them, and they lived, and stood upon their feet, an exceedingly great host. Then he said to me, "Son of man, these bones are the whole house of Israel. Behold, they say, `Our bones are dried up, and our hope is

lost; we are clean cut off. Therefore prophesy, and say to them, Thus says the Lord GOD: Behold, I will open your graves, and raise you from your graves, O my people; and I will bring you home into the land of Israel. And you shall know that I am the LORD, when I open your graves, and raise you from your graves, O my people. And I will put my Spirit within you, and you shall live, and I will place you in your own land; then you shall know that I, the LORD, have spoken, and I have done it, says the LORD."

A Reading from the Letter of Holy Apostle Paul to the Corinthians (1 Corinthians 5:6-8; Galatians 3:13-14)

Your boasting is not good. Do you not know that a little leaven leavens the whole lump? Cleanse out the old leaven that you may be a new lump, as you really are unleavened. For Christ, our paschal lamb, has been sacrificed. Let us, therefore, celebrate the festival, not with the old leaven, the leaven of malice and evil, but with the unleavened bread of sincerity and truth. Christ redeemed us from the curse of the law, having become a curse for us -- for it is written, "Cursed be every one who hangs on a tree" -- that in Christ Jesus the blessing of Abraham might come upon the Gentiles, that we might receive the promise of the Spirit through faith.

A Reading from the Holy Gospel according to Matthew (27:62-66)

Next day, that is, after the day of Preparation, the chief priests and the Pharisees gathered before Pilate and said, "Sir, we remember how that impostor said, while he was still alive, `After three days I will rise again.' Therefore order the sepulchre to be made secure until the third day, lest his disciples go and steal him away, and tell the people, `He has risen from the dead,' and the last fraud will be worse than the first." Pilate said to them, "You have a guard of soldiers; go, make it as secure as you can." So they went and made the sepulchre secure by sealing the stone and setting a guard.
