Whether we realize it or not, we live a designer life. The only question centers on, “Who does the designing?” Is yours a life built by your own designs or by divine design?

When we talk of design and building, we talk about “foundation.” Without a solid foundation, any building will eventually collapse. Your life and your faith work that way, too. It is significant that you are standing on a solid foundation.

Psalm 18:1-3 says "I love you, O LORD, my strength. The Lord is my rock and my fortress and my deliverer, my God, my rock, in whom I take refuge, my shield, and my horn of my salvation, my stronghold. I call upon the LORD, who is worthy to be praised, and I am

saved from my enemies."

As we continue with our Easter Journey, we are reminded of this “foundation.” Those who live by God's design rest fully on the only secure foundation-Jesus Christ, his life, death, and resurrection. Jesus is our stronghold, our fortress, the secure immovable footing on which God's faithful live. Jesus described himself in these terms as he wrapped up the teaching that has come to be known as the Sermon on the Mount (Matthew 5-7).

He said: These words I speak to you are not incidental additions to your life, homeowner

improvements to your standard of living. They are foundational words, words to build a life on.

If you work these words into your life, you are like a smart carpenter who built his house on solid rock. Rain poured down, the river flooded, a tornado hit-but nothing moved that house.

It was fixed to the rock.

But if you just use my words in Bible Studies and don't work them in your life, you are like a stupid carpenter who built his house on the sandy beach. When a storm rolled in and the

waves came up, it collapsed like a house of cards. (Matthew 7:24-27 THE MESSAGE BIBLE).

Our past four spring church showers have been so successful that the Administrative Council has decided to have another. There will be a display in Fellowship Hall of lots of items that the church can use throughout the year in the office, the kitchen, and our Sunday School rooms. We are hoping that as congregation members are out shopping, they will consider purchasing some extra supplies to donate to the church for its use. This is another small way that everyone can have some part in helping the church budget with items that are needed. Several items are brand and size specific as that is what has been found to work the best for people in our church. Please adhere to those wishes to minimize wasted purchases. As a continued added bonus this year and because several of you chose this option, the “Four Hands and a Shopping Cart” are willing to work for you. Contact the church office, Terri Luehring, or Cathy Gethmann to let us know an amount you wish to spend, items you are thinking about, and we will do your shopping for you. You can leave money and the items you would like purchased, in an envelope in the church office or simple place that envelope in the Sunday collection try with a note on the outside For Church Shower. Individual items will be listed on “flower” & “umbrellas” tags in Fellowship Hall that you can take, purchase the item, and then return to the church sometime during late April and early May. We are including a sample summary wish list of items below in case this is more convenient for you. More items will be added to the wish tags in Fellowship Hall also.

Kids’ Club Wrap up

This year’s Kids’ Club wrapped up with a bowling party on April 11th.

Kids’ Club is open to all Gladbrook area children in 2nd, 3rd or 4th grades. We meet monthly after

school, starting with an after school snack, followed by Bible stories, skits, songs, crafts and games

which all reinforce the Bible lesson. We end with an evening meal for the kids with parents picking

up the kids around 6:30.

This year’s them was “Fruit of the Spirit” Galatians 5:22. Ask any of the kids who attended this year

what the 9 fruits are and they will probably recite them for you. The kids were wonderful and we

thank the parents, leaders and churches for making this possible.

Kids do not need to have a church affiliation to attend. Kids’ Club is sponsored by the local churches

through monetary donations, food donations and volunteers. We had 10 volunteer adult leaders this

year and the support of Pastor Joe, Pastor Gideon and Rev. Berry.

This year the kids in all grades were presented with Bibles at the year-end bowling party, Bibles

geared toward their age group. We pray that these Bibles will be used at home to learn about Jesus

and his teachings. Next year and in future years, Bibles will be presented to 2nd graders or others

who did not attend this year.

Kids’ Club.

Several kids received Bibles to continue their

journey of knowing Jesus.

UMW Minutes

April 17, 2019

Nine members of the United Methodist Women met in Fellowship Hall at 9:30 a.m. The committee for the day were Hostesses, Avriel Koester, Joan Surber, and Dana Brown. A blueberry bread and fruit kabob with coffee and tea were served on Easter theme tables including crocheted bunnies in a cabbage patch. After eating, Kathy Poling conducted the business meeting. On April 16, Westbrook was entertained. This committee was Becky Fish, JoAnne Sash, June Klinefelter, and Kathy Poling. On March 8, 2019, Karen Pieper, Kathy Herink, Linda Schneider, Kathy Poling, and Marcy Knaack served Mulligan stew, a jello salad with mint ice cream and a shamrock cookie to twenty four. June Klinefelter reported 31 dollars was earned. Pauline Flamme read the secretary minutes from the December 13, 2018 meeting. No corrections were made and the minutes past. Correspondence was read from Crayon Corner for the clothing purchased for them. UNI Tree House sent information about a possible program. Kathy Poling announced that the Day Apart to be held in Osage on May 11. Mission U will be held in Marshalltown on July 21-23. Feminine kits are a new project for Africa. It was suggested that this could be a meeting workshop in June, July, or August. More information will be collected about this. Dana Brown wanted to know how the UMW handles the Senior High Breakfast. Our seniors are Emily Pepe, Kayla Vavroch, Jack Garber and Taylor Gienger. Kathy Poling closed the meeting with prayer. June Klinefelter had two readings for devotions. Joan Surber had crocheted a washcloth with three crosses to remind each attendee the meaning of Easter along with a carrier for tissues for their purse. Thank you. Kathy Poling gave each a cross shaped scratch board to decorate with our own symbols of Easter. The next meeting will be MAY 15. Blueberry Coffee Cake Cream Together: 1C. Sugar 1/2 C. Softened Butter (1 stick) 2 eggs Add and Mix: 2 C. Flour 1 tsp. Baking Powder 1 tsp. Soda 1/2 tsp. Salt Mix in 1 C. Sour Cream (8oz.) and 1 tsp. Almond Flavoring Filling Mix: 1 can Blueberry Pie Filling 1 small box of Fresh Blueberries Crumble: Mix 3/4 C. Brown Sugar; 1/4 C. White Sugar; 1/2 tsp. Cinnamon; 1 C. Sliced almonds

Put half of batter in 9x13” pan. Put 1/2 of blueberry mix on top. (1/2 can of blueberry pie filling and 1 small container of fresh, washed blueberries.) Add remaining batter and then remaining blueberry. Swirl and Top with crumble mix. Bake at 325 degrees for 35-40 min.

Administrative Council Minutes

March 25, 2019

Thirteen members met on March 25th at 7:00pm. Members in attendance were… Susan Beichley, Dana Brown, Gideon Gallo, Mandy Gehring, Cornell Gethmann, June Klinefelter, Paul Koester, Carolyn Moe, Karen Pieper, Kathy Poling, Susie Strohbehn, Kevin Williams and Dave Koester. June called the meeting to order at 7:00pm. Pastor Gideon provided the devotional. Cornell motioned to approve past minutes, Mandy gave the second, Motion passed Susan gave the treasurers report. Susan will be paying 3 months of our Connectional Giving. Paul motioned the treasurer report to be approved, Karen gave the second. Motion passed. Committee reports were as follows… SPPRC: Employee evaluations are completed. Another Set of Eyes form is being completed. They are due May 1st. UMW: They were not able to visit Westbrook because of an Influenza outbreak. They will try to visit when flu sea-son is over. The next UMW meeting will be held April 17th at 9:30am. Mission: We will be collecting cleaning supplies for Pastor Gideon to take to Hamburg Methodist Church that has experienced a great deal of flooding. The Good Samaritan Fund has collected 452.00. Casey’s gas cards have been purchased with some of the funds. These cards will be used for stranded travelers who call Pastor Gideon or Dana needing gas money. Pastor Gideon will also use some of the money to help community members who ask for help with their pay utility bills. Trustees: A new Circuit Board was installed at the Parsonage. Mark Knaack has agreed to help with the recon-struction of the front of the sanctuary. The rails have been removed. The missing carpet on the stairs will be re-placed with tile or linoleum by Floor and More. April 4th the organ is scheduled to have tune up. This will be paid out of our Organ Fund. April 6th will be our Outside Spring Cleanup day. Finance/ Stewardship: Not available for report Agenda Building items: It was reported that the pot pie fundraiser had a profit of $946.00 in March. This amount was corrected to be $991.66. This money will contribute to the general fund. A few items have been found in the basement that could be sold in a garage Sale. Karen offered to sell these items at her sale in June. Mandy made a motion to sell these items. Susan seconded the motion. Motion passed. There was no Old or New business to discuss. Pastor Gideon reported He has made many hospital visits. He and Carolyn have been serving communion to com-munity members. He has attempted to visit Westbrook Acres but hasn’t been able to because of the sickness they are experiencing. He is planning a trip to Hamburg to distribute cleaning supplies to the flood ravaged area. Many additional service opportunities will be added this year for the Lenten and Easter season. He continues to work with the children of the community through the Jr and Sr. YF. And Sunday School and Confirmation classes. Pastor Gideon closed our meeting with a prayer. Committee reports were as follows… SPPRC: Dave wasn’t in attendance but sent a report. The forms Another Set of Eyes are almost ready to be submitted. Dead-line is May 1. UMW: They were able to visit Westbrook. The next meeting is May 15

th. Every woman of the church is invited to all of the

meetings. Mission: Carolyn thanked Pastor Gideon for taking cleaning supplies to Hamburg Methodist Church that has experienced a great deal of flooding. The Spring Shower is being held again this year. It has already started. Terri Luehring and Cathy Geth-mann are leading this project. Trustees: Paul reported the cleanup day, Saturday , April 6

th, went smoothly. Mark Knaack has been working on the front of the

sanctuary. May1st the Floor and More workers will be here to lay tile or flooring to finish the front of the sanctuary. There was a large bill from the City for our water usage again this past month trustees are looking into an alert sensor to alert someone that there is a leak or running water. A correction needs to be made from March meeting. Dana recorded that on April 4

th the organ

was scheduled to have tune up that would be paid out of the organ fund. This was incorrect. The payment came out of the pi-ano budget. Finance/ Stewardship: No report given Agenda Building items: There were 3 items for Agenda Building.

Lock box Signatures need to be changed. After some discussion it was decided to take Brad Smoldt, Al Gienger and Joan Appelgate off the signature card. Susan Beichley, Treasurer, Paul Koester, Trustee chair, and June Kline-felter, Ad Council Chair, should be added to the signature card for access to our lock box. Grant made the motion to proceed. Susie gave the second. Motion passed

Carolyn asked on behave of the Befrienders for a donation by the church to help fund scholarships for new and existing members to get more training. Following some discussion, Carolyn motioned $100.00 be used from the mission and evangelism budget to fund this donation. Paul gave the second. Motion passed.

Senior Breakfast was discussed. Carolyn agreed to chair this event. Dana will help her. Pastor Gideon will get the gifts for the graduates. Dana will send out invitations as soon as possible to the 4 graduates, Taylor Gienger, Kayla Vavroch, Emilee Pepe, and Jack Garber. This year the cost of the event will be recorded so it can be budgeted for next year instead of the hosting volunteers having to pay for everything themselves.

There was no Old to discuss. New Business- Becky would like to consider planting daffodils or other bulb flowers in the lawn near the highway in the shape of a cross. This was discussed with some members liking the idea and other members not in favor because it would be difficult to mow around until the foliage died off each year. It was decided that the council members would think about this idea until a later date. Pastor Gideon reported he visited the flood ravaged town of Hamburg to distribute cleaning supplies. Clean up efforts will con-tinue and other trips to distribute supplies will be coordinated as needed. He has made 3 hospital visits. He and Carolyn have been serving communion to community members. He has visited Westbrook Acres. He continues to work with the children of the community through the Jr and Sr. YF., and Sunday School and Confirmation classes. He said there were several additional services added to the Lenten calendar that were attended by several members. He has attended several meetings this month. He attended one funeral and officiated at another one. There is a baptism planned for April 28

th. The Confirmation class are

wanting to attend camp June 16th through 21

st.

Joys: Becky announced she will be a Great Grandma this coming Thursday, April 25

th. Her Great Grand Daughter will be

named Lillianna Joy. Concerns: 1. Don Anker is still receiving treatments and is awaiting surgery. 2. Cornell is in Grundy Hospital recovering from several broken bones received from a falling accident. Pastor Gideon closed our meeting with a prayer. The next meeting will be May 20

th at 7pm. This is the third Monday evening
