Dear Neighbours,

Welcome to Edition 15 Summer 2011. Firstly

many thanks to the Senior Citizens Bus Trust

Walking Group who have undertaken this issue’s

looking for a group to deliver the Winter Edition

so if you’re interested get in touch.

New advertisers are Annette’s Gallery on page 5,

The Lock Doctor returns on page 14, Coconoil on

page 16 and Craggan Outdoors on page 21. I’m

always on the look out for new advertisers, so if

you know of anyone who may be interested, or

have received some great local service, then let

me know. If your recommendation turns into an

advert I’ll send a small gift as a thank you. All

community information and non-profit editorial is

included free of charge, and I’m only able to do

this if I have enough advertisers, so if you own a

local business then take a look on page 39 and

it’ll bring back fond memories for some of you. If

anyone else has any interesting material to share

then please get in touch, and I’d also like to hear

about any community news and events for the

Autumn Issue (Sep/Oct/Nov).

The Lossie Local is now online

(www.thelossielocal.co.uk), so check it out if you

get the chance. The latest copy is available to

view, so if you have any friends or relatives who

don’t live in Lossie that may be interested let

The

Lossiemouth

Business

Association

(LBA) was

formed in

1998 by local

businessmen,

and has since grown into a well established

organisation serving the town. It exists to

provide a representative body and act as a

common voice for its members, with the

aim of promoting and developing the

economic and social well being of the

businesses and local communities of

Lossiemouth and its surrounding area.

The LBA has, and will continue to, initiate

schemes that will improve the economic

environment of the community, and source

funding to carry out projects which will

enhance the attractiveness of Lossiemouth

as a place to do business. The LBA acts as

a focal point for members and facilitates

networking between the association and

related organisations to stimulate debate,

discussion and learning.

The LBA has funded a website to promote

Lossiemouth: www.lossiemouth.org, on

which all members are able to request a

listing for free. Other initiatives by the

LBA, again which feature free listings for

members, include the production of a

business directory, guidebooks, tourism

leaflets and town maps. The LBA have

been instrumental in securing extra CCTV

cameras on Clifton Road, initiating the

James Square upgrade project, maintaining

the agenda of the RAF viewing platform

and erecting the Ramsay MacDonald

Viewing Point, in addition to various signs

around the town. Other work includes

support and donations to the Save RAF

Lossiemouth campaign, the Troop Aid Day

at Cooper Park in Elgin and a presentation

by RAF Lossiemouth in the Town Hall.

The LBA also work closely with other

groups such as Moray Council, the Market

Town Regeneration Project, national/local

newspapers and local TV and radio. The

LBA were successful in securing £250,000

to renovate Station Park, and were also

active in liaising with local shop owners

when funding became available for shop

front improvements. All members will get

a free listing in July‟s issue of „Highland

Life‟ within a LBA organised 4 page

spread promoting Lossiemouth.

Meetings are held whenever there‟s a

matter needing to be discussed, but

normally 2 to 3 times a year plus an AGM.

All Lossiemouth based businesses and

organisations are eligible to join and are

indeed strongly encouraged. New

members are particularly welcome, and

any current members are invited to become

more involved and play an active role in

the LBA. Membership costs are just £40 a

year, and forms are available to download

from the website or through Bernard

Annikin at the Post Office. If anyone has

any questions or enquiries

then please direct them in

the first instance to the

Chairman, Tony Rook, at

Buckley‟s Newsagents

(812069).

As the Community Warden for Lossiemouth, Burghead, Hopeman and Lhanbryde I will be dealing with some priority issues in these areas.

Antisocial behaviour is one of the many issues, with dog fouling and litter also falling into this category. All are high on my agenda to tackle.

There has been an increase in complaints about dog fouling and litter which is an ongoing issue throughout Moray. Dog owners should be aware that

whatever the weather outside they have a legal obligation under the Dog Fouling(Scotland) Act 2003 to clean up after their dog or a dog in their care.

If found to be flouting the Law they can receive a Fixed Penalty Notice (FPN) of a £40 on the spot fine. The Community Wardens of Moray are taking on

board the concerns of the public in what has become a hot topic in all areas of the county.

Community Warden Dave Haytack (Lossiemouth) will be out and about to put

into action a four point plan:

1) Talk with all dog walkers and owners giving them a chance to air their

concerns. 2) Hand out free dog bags. 3) Leaflet drops in hotspot areas. 4) Promote the Green Dog Walkers Scheme.

Dave will be holding open surgeries in Burghead, Hopeman and Lhanbryde from May and through August. The Moray Mobile Police Office will be visiting

these areas staffed by Community Warden Haytack, "This is a perfect means to get out and meet with members of our community, and allows anyone the

chance to come along and talk with myself about any issues which concern them in their area - obtain advice on anti-social behaviour, littering, fly

tipping and dog fouling, or even just for a chat. I see this as the sort of excellent, visible and accessible service which is essential to the public in our

more rural areas, and I would encourage anyone to visit at the given times

and dates."

I am also holding several Community Litter Picks in areas in and around Lossiemouth, and I would welcome and encourage anybody to come along

and give a helping hand in keeping their areas a nicer place to live. I would also hope for community groups such as the Scouts and Guides to give a

helping hand. Anyone wishing to get involved on the dates below should contact me on the following number 07800 670666. I would also like local

businesses to help in the supply of refreshments for the litter pick days.

T he Lossiemouth Flower Show, to be

held on Saturday 17 September in

Lossiemouth Community Centre, is a

great day out for both competitors and

spectators. There are sections for every

talent and every

age group; not just

gardeners - there’s

something for all

the family either to

enter or just view. If you’re an

enthusiastic gardener there are sections

on all aspects of horticulture, from fruit

and vegetables to specially grown

flowers or a bunch cut from the border.

The schedule has interesting titles for

both the novice and experienced flower

arranger, and attracts both male and

female exhibitors … so have a go. If

your gardening is limited to a pot plant

bring that along - there are extensive

classes for plants both large and small.

H owever if you have no horticultural

expertise you could enter the

baking or jams section,

with numerous entries

from cakes to clootie

dumplings; and for

those who enjoy

handicrafts there’s an

extensive range of

classes to enter from knitting to card

making.

T he children’s sections are always

popular with various clubs

encouraging children to show off their

talents in handiwork and baking, so

come and encourage the youngsters.

M ake a note of the date and come

along to enjoy and join in the

array of talent and inspiration. There

are also prizes for the best display of

hanging baskets and tubs in your own

garden; this will be judged on 12 July

with the winners announced at the

show. If you would like to be included

in this section contact the president on

547022. Schedules are in most shops

and the library so pick one up and see

what excites you.

Micro-Renewables – Biomass Boilers Last issue I promised to describe each micro-renewable technology in more detail, so today I’m going to talk about biomass boilers. But before we look at these I need to tell you that the introduction of the Renewable Heat Incentive (RHI), which was meant to pay home owners for producing their heat from a renewable source, has been postponed by the UK government to October 2012.

Now on to biomass boilers. Excluding some of the more exotic products there are three types available depending on the type, shape and size of wood fuel they require. These are log, chip and pellet boilers. So how do you choose the right one for your home? It comes down to two questions: do you have firewood readily available and how (in)convenient would you like your boiler to be. If you have access to cheap or even free logs, and you are happy to fill your boiler once or twice a day, log boilers are for you. If, on the other hand, you only want to touch your

boiler once a week or even less, you go for a pellet boiler. They operate fully automatic, with a pellet feed in mechanism and ash removal. With the most sophisticated models you only need to empty the ash pan twice a year! Wood chip boilers are somewhat in between the other two types; they have automatic feed mechanisms but require a bit more attention than pellet boilers. Wood chip boilers are typically used for larger buildings, e.g. schools, public buildings, hotels etc. For most homes a pellet boiler is the right choice.

But before you rush to get yourself a biomass boiler you have to consider the space requirements. The boilers themselves are generally about twice the size than the equivalent oil or gas boiler would be. You also need some storage space for your pellets. The ‘energy density’ of pellets is about a third that of heating oil. This means that you need three times the volume of pellets than oil to get a certain amount of heat energy. So what about pellet delivery and availability? The latter used to be a problem a few years ago but we now have at least three sizeable pellet manufacturers between Aberdeen and Inverness (well, Invergordon to be precise), so availability is not an issue anymore. Delivery is either in bags of 10, 15 or 20 kg or in bulk, blown in from a tanker. Minimum order quantities are usually one pallet full of bags (approx. 1 tonne) or 4 tonnes in bulk. Bulk delivery is obviously cheaper per tonne so the extra expense of a storage hopper (can be underground) pays off in the long run. For more information about biomass check out the Forestry Commission’s dedicated website on www.biomassenergycentre.org.uk. For more information about boilers you should speak to an installer but make sure he/she is MCS certified. To find a certified installer go to www.microgenerationcertification.org and click on the ‘Find an Installer’ button towards the bottom of the page. Alternatively you can talk to us at Sustainable Technologies Limited in Forres.

the most recent news from STV Local

about the future of RAF Lossiemouth.

For the very latest up-to-date

information see

http://local.stv.tv/lossiemouth

Army Negotiations Holding Up RAF

Lossiemouth Decision. Protracted

negotiations with Army top brass are being

blamed on continued delays over the future of

RAF Lossiemouth, it was revealed on Monday.

Moray MSP Angus Robertson, who is defence

spokesman for the SNP at the UK Parliament,

pressed Armed Forces Minister Nick Harvey

over the continuing delays in announcing the

future of the bases at Lossiemouth and

Leuchars. Mr Robertson called for an end to

months of „prevarication‟, on the back of reports

last week that a recommendation had already

been made to ministers that RAF Leuchars

should be handed over to the Army, with RAF

Lossiemouth remaining as the sole air base in

Scotland.

The UK Government announced in October

2010 that RAF Kinloss would close, and that the

future of RAF Lossiemouth would be the

subject of further consideration, with a decision

made by December. Mr Robertson pointed out

that the continued delay to that decision is

placing an unbearable strain on the Moray

economy. He said in the House of Commons:

“These delays are causing uncertainty and

economic damage in Moray, and also in Fife

and elsewhere. The least that the service

communities should expect is a definitive date

for a decision with no more delays.”

Mr Harvey responded by saying that the

decision making process in this case was “a

complex piece of work”, adding that the basing

of Army troops returning from Germany was

something that they simply had to get right. The

minister added: “I do understand the impact that

waiting for a decision has on local communities,

but it is more important that we get this right

than it is that we do it fast.”

Lossiemouth campaigners were told by the

Prime Minister that a decision could be expected

in June or early July. Mr Harvey repeated that

timescale in the Commons on Monday, assuring

Mr Robertson that a decision would be

announced before the house went into recess on

July 20.

Lossie councillor Dave Stewart, who is chair of

the Save RAF Lossiemouth campaign

committee, said last night: “Every time a UK

Government minister speaks it seems that we

get a different message, but at least this time we

appear to have a firm commitment to announce

the future of our base before the summer recess.

The damage these last six or seven months of

uncertainty has done to our community has been

clear for all to see.” By Stuart Crowther,

Don’t be Afraid of Fats Low fat diets have been very popular for losing weight and fats have been condemned for many years as being bad for you health. However it’s not quite that easy; the body needs fats and oils to function properly and it’s a matter of knowing which ones are good and which ones aren’t.

There are different kinds of fats: - Polyunsaturated such as fish oil, sunflower oil, sesame oil, flax oil, hemp oil & walnut oil. - Monounsaturated fats such as olive oil. - Saturated fats such as butter, lard, duck & goose fat, palm & coconut oil.

Today I’d like to look at one of the saturated fats - Coconut Oil. When you hear the word saturated fat most people think ‘bad for you’ and ‘high cholesterol’. Coconut Oil is none of this. Coconut Oil is rich in medium chain triglycerides (MCTs), lauric acid and capric acid, which have been shown to be very beneficial for the body; MCTs raise the body’s metabolism thus

increasing energy levels and leading to weight loss. 50% of the fatty acids in coconut fat are lauric acid which is converted into monolaurin. Monolaurin has antiviral and antibacterial properties which can destroy lipid-coated viruses such as herpes, influenza and various pathogenic bacteria including listeria monocytogenes and helicobacter pylori. And Coconut Oil does not raise cholesterol levels. Much research has been carried out by Mary Enig PhD - for more information visit www.coconutoil.com

Coconut Oil is safe for cooking as it is heat stable. You can use it instead of butter or margarine, or try it in biscuits, cakes, muffins, flap jacks and pastry or add it to pancake batter. Add a teaspoon to your porridge, muesli or smoothie, stir it into soup or rice. I love it as spread on toast/bread with honey on top. Or you could try the following recipe:

Almond Cookies 100g ground almonds 2 tbsp virgin coconut oil 3 tbsp runny honey or agave syrup 1 tsp vanilla 1 tbsp desiccated coconut ¼ tsp baking powder

1) In a bowl mix almonds, desiccated coconut and baking power. 2) Melt coconut oil and mix with honey & vanilla. 3) Stir melted coconut oil/honey mix into the dry ingredients. If mixture seems too sloppy add more desiccated coconut and/or almonds. Place in fridge to firm up for half and hour or so. 4) Use wet hands to shape 8 walnut sized balls. 5) Place the balls, well spaced, on a greased backing tray, flatten and prick with a fork. 6) Bake in pre-heated oven for 12-15 min at 150C.

The Lossiemouth Raft Race is a local charity fundraising initiative now in its 35th

year. This popular event consists of teams of 4 - 8 people (often in fancy dress) racing on rafts entirely constructed by themselves from the East Beach Bridge to the harbour mouth and back, being cheered on by several thousand people who watch from the harbour and enjoy the other attractions available. These include fairground rides, a variety of stalls and a fancy dress competition – all in all a great day out for all the family! The race is organized by a team of volunteers from RAF Lossiemouth, and is open to both military and civilian teams; if you are over 16 and interested in a great team-building opportunity whilst raising money for charity, please get in touch. This year the race will be held on Sunday 14 Aug 2011; the

gates open at 1230, with the Race starting at 1430. In 2010 we raised over £3200 for charity, splitting the money between the Elgin & District Cancer Support Group & the RAF Benevolent Fund. This year we will be continuing to support one local and one national charity, with 2011‟s race raising money for The Neonatal Unit at Aberdeen Maternity Hospital and Erskine (who provide nursing and medical care for veterans), so please come along and support this worthwhile community event. If you are interested in entering a raft, or if you would like more information, contact Flt Lt Harper-Lewis, 12 (B) Sqn, ext 5040, or c/o MCO Office, RAF Lossiemouth, 95161 ext 7934 or by email [email protected]

‘Fish and Chips’ Open Day 16 - 18 June (during opening hours)

Flagship of the Scottish Fisheries Museum,

Reaper is the last surviving First Class

sailing lugger of the „Fife‟ type and is now

the sole example of a once prolific type of

vessel. Berthed in Anstruther, adjacent to

the Scottish Fisheries Museum, Reaper is

equipped as a floating museum of the now

diminished herring industry. Crewed by

the volunteer members of the Scottish

Fisheries Museum Boats Club, Reaper also

visits ports around Scotland and Northern

England on cultural tours. One such visit

was to Lossiemouth between 7 - 10 May,

when hundreds of school children and

visitors to the harbour had a rare chance to

look round the superbly restored fishing

vessel.

Reaper is a Fife sailing herring drifter, the

most popular design of fishing boat on the

East Coast of Scotland for the greater part

of the 19th and early 20th Centuries. First

registered at

Fraserburgh in 1902

(FR 958) she moved

to Shetland and was

registered at

Lerwick in 1908

(LK 707) where she

had great success at

the summer herring

fishing. In the late

1930s she held the

record catch of

herring for

Shetland, some 223

cran - almost a quarter of a million fish.

Originally built as a sailing lugger, she had

a Gardner engine installed in 1916,

continuing to fish until the outbreak of the

Second World War when she was

requisitioned by the Admiralty and saw

service in the south of England. After the

war she returned to fishing in Shetland

until 1957.

In 1959 she was purchased by Zetland

County Council for use as a „flit-boat‟

carrying general cargoes and renamed

Shetlander. She retired in 1974 and was

purchased by The Scottish Fisheries

Museum. During the following years she

was restored to her original 1902 rig and

renamed Reaper FR 958.

Admission to Reaper is free. She is

maintained largely by the voluntary

donations made by visiting members of the

public.

LOSSIEMOUTH FOOTBALL CLUB Lossiemouth entered the closing stages of the season with a congested March, a month which featured no less than seven games. The Coasters got things started with a fine 1-0 win away to Huntly, a luxurious finish from Scott Matheson securing a rare win in Aberdeenshire for Lossie. Lossie followed up with a dramatic injury time win over Clach at Grant Park. A goal down at half time, Lossie fought back to lead with goals from Bryan Bell and Scott Matheson before Clach levelled with a late penalty. Deep in injury time, Lossie avenged the last minute equaliser scored by Clach earlier in the season by stealing all three points with a last-gasp Ross Duncan strike.

The Coasters continued their unbeaten run with a point away to Brora Rangers. Sent into the far north on a snowy Wednesday evening, Lossie went a goal up early on before a bizarre final ten minutes saw the sides rattle in five goals between them, the last going in off the head of Steven Sim in the final minute to earn Lossie a draw. A trip into darkest Aberdeenshire saw the unbeaten run come to an end, as two first half goals helped Formartine overcome Lossie in horrendous playing conditions.

On a pitch that was only declared playable half an hour before kick-off, a decision that looked questionable as play continued, Lossie were a match for their expensively assembled hosts but ran out of steam as the game

progressed and frostbite set in.

Lossie were paired with Fraserburgh in the opening stages of the Fosters Highland League Cup, and the sides served up a classic at Grant Park. Lossie fought back from a goal down to level late in the second half courtesy of Kevin Grant to force extra time. The Broch went ahead in the first period of extra time, but a goal from Colin Charlesworth set up a penalty shoot-out. Fraserburgh keeper Paul Leask was the hero for his side, saving three spot kicks to send his side into the next round. Another midweek card saw Lossie head for title-chasing Keith and a ding-dong encounter saw five goals, a penalty and two red cards. Keith took the lead thanks to a

generous spot-kick award but Lossie were ahead at half time thanks to Ricky Wardrop and Ross Archibald. The Maroons fought back to take the lead late in the game before soft red cards shown to Kevin Grant and Ross Duncan ensured the Coasters finish the game with nine men. Fraserburgh made their second visit to Grant Park in a week, this time for a league match and, while it featured none of the goals of the previous encounter, the sides served up a tense goalless draw. Lossie followed up the Fraserburgh draw with a double header against Inverurie Locos. The first game at Harlaw Park was as one sided affair as Lossie had been involved in all season, and sadly it was Locos who were the side on top. Five goals ahead at the interval, a Ricky Wardrop goal failed to ignite a comeback and the Locos ran out 6-1

winners over a strangely subdued Lossie.

The following week the sides met again and once again the game was dominated by one team, only this time it was Lossie who were in charge. A first half goal from Ricky Wardrop put the Coasters ahead, and late goals from Kevin Grant and Bryan Bell ensured the scoreline more accurately reflected the hosts’ performance on the day.

Lossie’s penultimate home game saw local minnows Forres Mechanics visit Grant Park, and the Brown and Yellows were demolished by a rampant Lossie. A season defining performance from Lossie saw the hosts run out 4-0 winners thanks to first half efforts from Ross Archibald and Steven Ellis and second half strikes from Nikki Smith and Scott Matheson. Forres were contained so well that the Can Can’s failed to muster a shot at goal from open play, and even when offered a charitable penalty Forres conspired to see it saved by Darren McConnachie.

The club’s supporters now have their own internet forum, which is used for discussions on all matters relating to the club and the Scot-Ads Highland League. The forum has become very popular with

fans throughout the Highland League and contains information on all levels of local football, including local junior and welfare clubs and leagues. To sign up and have your say, visit www.fitbanorth.com.

Lossiemouth FC run a successful social club within the town which contributes greatly to the running of the club, together with providing a place for fans to gather before and after matches, and during the week for televised football, snooker, pool, or just a quick pint. The club is located on Macduff Street; after a game, turn right out of the gate and follow the crowd! New members welcome.

Fixtures for the new season are scheduled to be released in early June. These will be announced in the local press and posted on the club’s website www.lossiemouthfc.co.uk as soon as they are released so supporters can work out as early as possible which weddings they’ll be unable to attend due to fixture clashes.

Summer at St James. During the month of July there will be no

evening service. Instead there will be a 9.30am service in addition to our 11 o‟clock worship. This is a „come as you are going‟ service where you can come and worship before going on out for the rest of the day. There is no need to dress up for church, just wear whatever you feel is appropriate for the rest of your day‟s activities, be it the beach, a bike ride or a walk in the hills. This will be followed by an opportunity to have breakfast in the hall where bacon rolls, sausage in a roll, tea and coffee will be served for a small charge.

Summer Mission. This year‟s summer mission will run

from 4 - 8 July. It is called Mission Rescue. There will be fun events for primary school age children in the morning for those going into primary one up to this year‟s primary seven. There will be two youth nights in the evenings, a family quiz night on the Wednesday which is fun for everyone, and a family barbeque on the Friday evening. All are very welcome.

STOP PRESS! Sorry to anyone looking for the useful

numbers section (hopefully you still have a past issue to check). I decided to take it out at the proof stage as I remembered I’d forgotten to put St James’ entry in - so here it is:

years ago when just 13 women Power Walked the New York City Marathon in their bras to raise money and awareness for breast cancer. The charity was founded by Nina Barough who woke one morning with what seemed like a ‘fun’ idea to raise money in decorated bras to raise money for a good cause. Word soon got around and people started to call Nina asking if they could join her next walking challenge. Due to her work commitments it was doubtful if that would happen, but then fate intervened. In January 1997 Nina discovered that she had breast cancer. Those around her felt very helpless, so decided that to Power Walk the London Marathon would be a really positive way of supporting her. It was another huge success for the walkers, and they entered a second team in 1998. 25 walkers claimed their place, but another 25 weren’t so lucky. Nina decided to create a one off marathon for these girls. The intrepid 25 grew to 65, and on the eve of the London Marathon, they set off at midnight on Saturday with the intention of completing their marathon by 7am Sunday morning and passing on the ‘baton’ in Trafalgar Square to the girls that would be walking the official event … the MoonWalk was born!

On 11 June a team from Lossiemouth Slimming World will take on the challenge and participate in the Edinburgh MoonWalk. Group Leader Yvonne Smith insists that her girls are

training hard for the big challenge, ‘we’re starting to clock up some serious mileage. Rain, snow or sun will not get in the way’. The Lossie group started their training with a four and a half mile walk in Cullen, ‘that first walk seems long ago, and now a wee jaunt of a similar distance to the Lighthouse on West Beach is almost a hop, skip and a jump! That’s not to say it’s been easy going. We’ve been lost in Cullen, Dufftown and Forres; had the local police help 3 of our walkers (who remain anonymous!), and had snow up to our knees. But one thing remains constant, and that’s the determination to make a difference by challenging ourselves to complete this walk, and to raise money and awareness into breast cancer research. We’re asking people to help us spread the word about the MoonWalk, and helping us raise funds for this fantastic charity.’ By the time you read this article the

Edinburgh MoonWalk may have already taken place (with the team no doubt nursing their blisters!), but you can still show your congratulations and support by donating on the Lossiemouth MoonWalk Appeal Webpage:

Dr Neil Sabiston Retirement As many of you will already know Dr Neil Sabiston retired from the Practice at the end of May. Dr Sabiston has worked in Lossiemouth for 32 years since he qualified as a GP. He has always been 100% committed to general practice and has worked tirelessly over the years to ensure that the highest quality of care was provided for the local people.

Over the years Neil has seen significant changes in the way we work. For many years he provided maternity care and delivered many of the local babies, and he was also the main provider of Family Planning services to his patients. He has performed minor surgery in the Practice enabling patients to be treated locally for

many skin conditions, and has offered acupuncture to help treat musculoskeletal problems. He took over the responsibility for GP training nearly 10 years ago and remained involved until his retirement. When he first came to Lossiemouth the surgery was situated in St Geraldine‟s Road. Neil was heavily involved in the design and planning of the move to the new premises in Clifton Road which sadly the Practice quickly outgrew, eventually moving to our current location. He was also instrumental in getting the new surgery building in Hopeman.

Neil became involved in GP politics at an early age, joining the GP Sub committee in Aberdeen as a trainee and remaining an active member ever since. Moray often suffers from being a peripheral part of Grampian and he has fought tirelessly over the years to ensure that the views of our area have been heard.

Neil has not only been a GP in Lossiemouth but also an active and valued member of the local community. He has loved the area since moving here and has been involved in many facets of town life. He particularly loves the Golf Club and the Sports Club and walking on the beach, and was delighted to be able to bring his children up here.

I am sure that you will join with the staff of the Medical Practice in wishing Neil all the very best for a long, happy and active retirement. He will be greatly missed but his contributions and legacy will ensure that he is never forgotten.

The Pegasus. Some of you may recall the story of the Vigilant’s Final

Voyage reported in the last issue. Contrary to what was reported there still remains a Lossiemouth based fishing vessel - The Pegasus. Douglas Scott and his two crewmen have been fishing from the Pegasus for 7 years, operating in and around the Moray Firth for 8 months of the year. Their haul is mainly squid in the summer months and prawns in winter.

Who Cares, Wins That I have been a soldier in three camps may surprise and confuse the reader, so I‟ll qualify my remarks. Before I was born, via a choice made in Eden‟s garden, I was conscripted into Satan‟s army! I was to remain a POW until my liberation through the Lord Jesus‟ death at the cross of Calvary. Before that liberation I enrolled with the British Army for the duration of seven years. I demobbed from Her Majesty‟s forces but remained in the chains of Satan‟s army. I often enquired about the demob procedures from his service but was blind to the clues in God‟s Word. Unknown to my then CO, a predestined attack was imminent! My symbolic White Flag was hoisted, defecting with cries, “I repent and believe that the Lord Jesus died for my sins”. Militarily I did a complete about turn.

Know Your Enemy Vital in a war scenario, you need to know your friends and your foe. We were all born as „conscripts‟ in Satan‟s army and by implication the numbers are big. Included are family, friends, politicians, judges, doctors etc. Ironically Satan‟s retention policy demands „blind‟ recruits, spiritually blind. With Satan as CO, and a myriad of messengers, angels and legions of helpers, the impact of his subtlety is not camouflaged.

Tactics & Weaponry Among the „War Cabinet‟ duties during a conflict is an assessment of the tactics and weaponry of both sides. Satan is very good at surprise or ambush attacks, with close-combat his favourite weapon. His first earthly attack on Eve is recorded in Genesis Ch 3. The mode of attack was not a „Surface to Air‟ missile, but rather a „Sin Missile‟. The impact was not explosive but implosive; tainting every DNA feature in the human body. What a hit! Although

not nuclear, the end result would be death and separation from God. Hidden characteristics were revealed; doubt, disobedience, blame, lying, cheating and the list goes on! His weapons or media used is equally exhaustive; false religion, media, newspapers, TV etc. Contrastingly, the Christian soldier‟s „War Cabinet‟ consists of the Bible, the inspired Word of God. A complete and authoritative „battle plan‟ is given to help win this battle. Like a soldier however, instructions and invitations must be accepted. It‟s not enough to memorise the Bible or attend at the battlefield or church, the invitation to fight must be accepted. As James reminds us “. . . do what it says”. The Bible reveals God to us. John the apostle writes, “in the beginning was the Word and the Word was with God and the Word was God”. The vital means of communication with our CO is prayer through Jesus Christ. Unlike our modern communications or Satan‟s signal links which are prone to breakdown, our contact is wireless and direct. Matthew reminds us that the „very‟ Son of God taught us not only the necessity of prayer but how and what to pray for. “Our father which art in heaven . . . “, a freephone number! Our features, unlike the enemy‟s covert subtlety, are displayed by actions of love, joy, peace and some six other blessings known as the „fruit of the spirit‟.

The „primer‟ used to fire the weapon is the Lord himself, „begotten‟ from His holy armoury. Applying this practically, „tracers‟ of prayer, fellowship, preaching and evangelism can be seen. The only „live firing‟ or wounding from the Christian soldier will be “please turn the other cheek” or not “repaying evil for evil”, a bullet proof vest is not required. Paul describes in Ephesians the Armour of God we should wear; the belt of truth, the breastplate of righteousness, the sandals of peace, the shield of faith, the helmet of salvation and the sword of the spirit. God‟s word says we are to love our enemy.

D-Day In WW2 the Battle of Britain was fought

and won in the air by the courageous

pilots of the RAF. Some 2000 years

earlier another more outstanding battle

was won. And won not by an army but

single-handedly by a man of whom some

said “can any good thing come out of

Nazareth”, referring to the Lord Jesus.

God‟s love for the „whosoever‟ was so

great in John Ch3 v16, that He sent His

Son to die a death of crucifixion, shedding

his blood at Calvary‟s cross. Immediately

this work was done, a reunion with God

was possible. Satan and his army were

defeated. The apostle Paul reminds us

“death has been swallowed up in victory”.

He gives us the victory through the Lord

Jesus Christ. Although the battle has

been won, the world is still „mined‟ by

Satan and full of booby traps. However

like the Battle of Britain, which was won in

the air, our ultimate victory and eternal

home will begin by an „airborne‟

experience when “the Lord Himself will

come from heaven. . .so shall we ever be

with the Lord”. Will you have a D-Day to

remember or forget?

“As a local tradesman I have found it invaluable to advertise in this publication. It appears to me that many potential customers hold on to their copies of The Lossie Local, and refer

to the information in it for a much longer period than they would, say, a newspaper.” (Jeffrey Lee Roofing Services 815343)

“Just to say I was in Lossiemouth on holiday recently and found several past copies of your magazine in my self-catering accommodation. I thought the contents were brilliant and

gave me lots of insight into the town and its local businesses and services.” (email received from holidaymaker Brenda Franklin)
