What I read today was a prayer by Anselm that

was written as a request for God to grant man the ability

to love God more. This is something I should be praying

for everyday.

What’s funny is that in human terms love is not

something that we request from another person. If

someone does not care for us of their own free well, we

would not call it love. But when approaching God, we

can never hope to love him of our own free will. So how

is this really love?

I’d say that it is love because God controls everything in

the universe. God created us and causes everything

within us to have being and to function properly.

Because of this, I would say that God can influence our

emotions or our actions greatly. And love is not simply

an emotion. It can definitely manifest itself in feelings of

excitement. But at the heart of it (pun intended), love

is service. It’s action. Words and fleeting emotions are

easy. Living is hard.

So I guess I would sum up Anselm’s prayer in this:

Anselm is praying that God would give him a desire to

live in a way that honors and serves God.

Anselm says that his desire to love God, his desire to

desire God, comes from God. When addressing God

Anselm asks that God would “give me what you have

made me want” and “grant me what you have made me

long for.” Anselm claims that “if my soul wills anything,

you gave it me.” So not only does our desire and love for

God have to come from God, but our desire to desire to

love God has to come from God. None of this can be

willed by us. (I feel a predestination vs. free will battle

beginning to rage inside of me. Let’s not let this turn into

that slippery slope. I don’t want to begin talking about

whether God chooses us or we choose God. I just know

that without God’s help we couldn’t love him in the way

that he requires - which is with all that we are)

Student Government would like to update you on two things that they have voted on over the past couple of weeks.

1. The deadline for applications for running for next year’s Student Government has been extended to February 15th, so you have exactly a week to get those in!

2. Student Government has decided to provide funds to do some up- dates in the Commuter Lounge. Together with Student Life, they are looking into furniture right now.

There are a couple other things in the works right now that Student Government is very excited to share with you once they are set in stone, so stay tuned!

As a big thank you for reading, we have a special prize for

you! But there’s a catch. You must be able to recite these

three things at the Student Life front desk from memory.

What day is the Financial Aid office open for walk-ins?

What is the SpiL series this semester?

When is the new deadline for Student Government

applications?

If you can name these three things, you can either receive

a candy bar or enter in a raffle for ice skating gift

certificates at the end of the month! There will be four

raffle winners.
