Time to Send the
Dutchman Flying
A Bloody Broadside Scenario GameSubmitted by Alan Spencer
Pictures by Alan Spencer and Ben Earnest
For our monthly Lone Star Historical Miniatures (LSHM) game day, Ben Earnest and
I decided to try out Bloody Broadsides rules (Portsmouth Miniatures) in a scenario
format on Sunday November 24 at The Game Closet in Waco, TX.
The Scenario
The scenario depicted three small (i.e. class 4 frigates/schooners) pirates in
hiding behind islands, against a Dutch merchantman (Class 3 ship, but ship
firepower reduced to 2), and a late arriving (turn 3) Dutch 2nd rate ship-of-the-
line (Admiral de Ruyder – 80 guns). Both Dutch crews were B class, the Pirate
crews all C class for morale.
The goal is simple, Dutch get their merchantman off the table to the far corner,
or sink all the pirates. Pirates just had to sink the Dutch merchantman.
In addition, we had a couple of other rules for the scenario.
Three (3) islands were placed. Any water hex touched by an island meant the
ship had to roll to see if they run aground (used fouling and ramming rules).
Wind direction had a possibility of changing. On doubles of odd digits, it went
60 degrees right (starboard). Doubles of even digits, 60 degrees left (port).
This did happen a couple of times.
The Game “Twas a fine day for sailin’ … and blastin’ things”
The Dutch merchant Uretch (not a true 64 gun class 3, but a stripped
down merchantman) was returning to Europe with a load of good
Caribbean rum. Ben assumed command of the Dutch ships. I took
command of the pirate ships located in the picture below, which also
shows the initial wind direction.
While the pirate fleets were expecting the Dutchman to go between the islands, the wily old sea dog Ben initially chose to try and head North East rather than between the islands.
This left the Lady MacBeth (seen below) the only one with any hopes of early engagement, as both the Damnation and the Black Swan would be fighting against the wind to close.
The pirate crew of the Lady Macbeth licked their chops as the Utrech tried to strike
north east but was unable to clear the island due to the wind direction.
And further to the south, the Utrech could see two more pirates trying to close, but
they were also fighting the wind direction.
Thanks for attending MillenniumCon XXII
The Lady Macbeth’s crew fired as they closed, with the Utrech’s well-
trained crew giving as good as they got (as the pirates had gotten too
close). And then, to the pirates horror and the Dutch glee, a second rate
ship-of-the-line arrived on the horizon – the 80 gun Admiral de Ruyder.
The Macbeth’s crew attempt to reverse away before the de Ruyder
closed, but then the wind shifted – giving the de Ruyder all the wind she
needed to close on the pirates quickly. This left the Lady MacBeth trapped
between the two Dutch ships.
While the Dutch were having a field day, the Black Swan was sailing back
and forth trying to move north, but she kept getting caught in wind shift,
even to the point of running aground.
With a final wind shift, The Damnation was able to finally move up to
support the Lady MacBeth. But she had been battered hard. Those 80
guns HURT! Anyway, 2 battlelines finally formed with the Dutch on the
north, and pirates on the south.
Death of the Lady Macbeth – in a brilliant maneuver the Dutch captain
sent orders to the merchantman to attempt a daring turn – and it worked
completely! The Lady Macbeth was subjected to bow and stern rakes,
decimating her crew to Davy Jones locker, leaving her a drifting hulk.
The Damnation, seeing the death of her sister ship, pulled ahead,
attempting to try get a quick shot off, or escape around the island.
The Dutch captain, so proud of his exploit, tried another fancy maneuver.
But his orders were misinterpreted by the merchant captain. And instead
of both coming alongside the pirate ship, they fouled each other right in
bow rake positions!
Between the wind no changing, the blocking island and pirate ship, the
Damnation plowed turn after turn of bow rakes into the Utretch until she
finally had to strike her colors (crew all dead). The Damnation was taking
quite a pounding as well from the de Ruyder, but the pirates would be
able to come back for the rum.
Ben and I had a great time, and showed the game to others as we played.
See you all next month!

Fate of a Nation/'Nam wrap up. The first game saw Tony (Egyptian) defend against Nathanael (Israeli) in the Bridgehead scenario.
It was a bloody affair but the Israelis' formation broke when they lost their Isherman formation commander and mortar half-tracks while losing none of their four support Sho't Kals (up gunned Centurions).
Lesson learned was to protect your core formation (Pics 1-5). The other game saw Evan ('Nam Armored Cav) defend against Chris (Jordanian Pattons, Centurions and Mech Infantry) in the Blocking Force mission. The US forces with only a single infantry unit relied on 6 Sheridans to defend the 2nd objective. Combined fire from 8 Pattons and 3 Centurions realized 4 Sheridans in flames and 2 bailed out while 3 Jordanian Pattons were in flames.
Aggressive movement simultaneously by a Mech infantry platoon assaulted and destroyed the 2 bailed out Sheridans sealing the Jordanian victory (Pics 6-8). The Americans are going back to the formation design drawing board and will not be so easily defeated next game.
