Congratulations to former Junior Sailing in-structor and SCYC member Mark LeBlanc! In January, at the International Association for Disabled Sailing’s Worlds and U.S. Sailing’s 2012 Rolex Miami OCR, LeBlanc earned a spot on the U.S. squad that will compete at the 2012 Paralympics in Eng-land! LeBlanc, who was born without a left forearm, began sailing as a youth and was

racing by age 11. “I’ve felt that I can do anything anyone else does,” Mark said. “I try not to focus on the whole disabled aspect. In my mind, I was never dis-abled.” Learn more about Mark and his quest at www.team-leblanc.com.

Club Activity Reportby DANA CORTES

Winter, what little of it we have had, seems to be over and the “season” at the South Carolina Yacht Club will be officially kicked off at the Club Commissioning on Sunday March 4 at 5:30 pm. This is a traditional event held every year on the first Sunday of March and it marks the change from winter to summer dress as well as the beginning of the boating season. Please join us at this yearly event as officers of the Bridge, members of the Club, and staff participate in the SCYC’s 23rd commissioning activi-ties. The ceremony is followed by a complimentary champagne and hors d’oeuvres reception. Then please plan to stay for the always popular Low Country theme buffet (further details are included on page 2).

You may have noticed increased activ-ity at the Club. The variety, quantity and popularity of events are definitely up -- the first ever Super Bowl party attended by 80 members being an example. Chef Kevin’s Daily specials have proven to be extremely popular and account for 50% of lunch and dinner meals served. The Sunday night Tapas menu is also a hit and has resulted in a significant increase in

Sunday night din-ers. The wine tasting events have proven to be extremely popular, with an average of 35 members partic-ipating. Many have joined us at new member socials with an attendance of 70+ members at the last event. Dining, catering and member events are all up over last year and the club has attracted 20 new members in the last 60 days. Perhaps all this activity and participation is partly a result of our local economy beginning to improve but much of it can be attributed to the hard work, creativity and emphasis on quality and value by the South Carolina Yacht Club’s staff and committee members. We are fortunate to have such dedicat-ed staff and club committee members working to make your club enjoyable and a place where you can be proud to belong.

If you haven’t visited the club recently please do. I feel certain you won’t be disappointed.

COMMODORE’S COMMENTS

SPRING IS HEREHappy Spring everyone! The official kick-off to the season will begin with the Club Commissioning event on Sunday, March 4. This is a grand tradition that commem-orates the opening of the boating season for SCYC. All members are encouraged to gather on the deck of the club at 5:30 p.m. for the ceremony and to make it an evening and stay for our Lowcountry Buffet following. Complimentary cham-pagne and hors d’oeuvres will be served after the ceremony for all to enjoy. Make your plans today!

EVENING DININGSpring is upon us and that means that the club will be bustling with dining activity. Just as a reminder, due to our first come, first served casual dining format, there may be a slight wait time for a table at the magic hour of 7:00 p.m. To alleviate the wait time, please consider alternating your dining times to either earlier or later. You may also consider arriving 15-20 minutes earlier to take advantage of the compli-mentary hors d’oeuvres and Happy Hour priced beverages.

REASONS TO CELEBRATE Congratulations to the following mem-bers who recently celebrated wedding an-niversaries at their club:

Diane and Mark Salyer - 11 yearsEllen and Gene Schraeder - 13 years

HOP OVER TO THE CLUBOur Easter weekend festivities will be here before you know it! We are looking forward to bringing back an Easter tradi-tion from almost a decade ago - an Egg Hunt at your club! See page 8 for more details.

MARCH WITH US!Join fellow members on Sunday, March 11, and show your SCYC pride at the annual Hilton Head Island St. Patrick’s Day Parade! The club will have a float

Hilton Head will be very impressed with the large contingent of members we will have so please help me spread the word and get everyone on board! And don’t forget to wear your SCYC colors AND green!

SALTY SISTERS & BRINY BROTHERSSubmitted by Admiral Judy & Capt. Bob PowellSpring has sprung for all you sailors and we have an exciting time planned for you in March and April. On Tuesday, March 13, we will have a traditional Salty Sister sail to allow you to use and enhance your sailing skills (instruction by Judy – novices encouraged), planning to head toward Port Royal Sound, leaving the SCYC dock at 11:30 am and returning around 3 pm. On Wednesday, March 14 we are planning a very special trip to a secret picnic destination – all food and drinks provided. This will be a Co-ed cruise (i.e. single saltys, single brinys, halves of couples, or couples (formal or not), but please no parrots, cats or dogs). We will depart from the SCYC dock at 10 am, returning soon after 3:30 pm. On Thursday, March 15, we will have another Co-ed (see above definition) adventure to Daufuskie Island for exploration and (maybe) lunch. Because of the tides, we will not be able to leave the SCYC dock until 10:30 am, returning about 4 pm.

April will bring some more exciting fun.

On Tuesday, April 17, we are planning (weather and wind permitting) a SAIL AROUND HILTON HEAD ISLAND. This will be an all day adventure provid-ing a chance to experience off shore sailing, use or develop navigation skills, and see another shore of Hilton Head. This is a Co-ed sail (see above defini-tion). We will depart the SCYC dock at 9 am and return time will depend on the wind direction and strength – definitely before dinner time (unless we decide to head to Bermuda). All should bring their own lunch – drinks will be provided by the Club. On Tuesday, April 24, we are scheduling a Co-ed anchor out in a secluded anchorage to have lunch with the dolphins, leaving the SCYC dock at 10:30 am and returning about 3 pm. Again, bring you own lunch (drinks sup-plied by Club). On Wednesday, April 25, we will have a Salty Sister sail (girl time) to wherever the spirit moves us. Time to be determined. And last but not least, a guy sail for the Briny Brothers on Thursday April 26 – time and venue to be decided later –hopefully before we set sail. What is said on the boat that day stays on the boat. As usual, you must reserve your space by calling Judy or Bob at 715-0331. And remember, the plans are made of Jell-O, subject to change for weather but we’ll work out the details as time gets nearer. Welcome aboard Autumn Voyager.

FLEET HOSTS SAYRA REGATTASubmitted by Kevin KeoghThe South Atlantic Yacht Racing Association, the regional organization for yacht clubs and sailors in Georgia, North Carolina and South Carolina, held its annual convention on Hilton Head January 28 and 29. To wrap up the annual meeting, our Harbor 20 fleet and the Club invited nine member clubs of SAYRA to compete in an Inter-Club Challenge regatta in Harbor 20s on Sunday, January 29. The Club and boat owners loaned their boats for the event and an owner representative sailed on each boat with a skipper and crew from the entering club.

Yachting Logby DAVID WILSON, Yachting Director

4 THE LOG March/April 2012

The SCYC Race Committee, with Kevin Keogh as principal race officer, assisted by John Rumsey, Muffy Schulze and David Wilson, ran three races, each about 45 minutes long, in a northerly breeze with oscillating shifts that kept the com-petitors and the race committee on their toes and produced three different race winners. Despite the shifty breeze, it was a beautiful January day for racing on Calibogue Sound. In the end, consis-tency won the day. The winning team’s record was a third and two seconds in a fleet of nine boats.

Handsome wood carving boards were the prizes presented after racing to Atlanta Yacht Club skipper Bryce Dryden (pic-tured top right with Peter Brower) in first place, South Carolina Yacht Club skip-per Gary Gleason in second place, and Charleston Ocean Racing Association skipper Rob Bowden in third place. The other competitors in order of final plac-ing were Columbia Sailing Club, Beaufort Yacht & Sailing Club, Savannah Yacht Club, Keowee Sailing Club, Carolina Yacht Club of North Carolina, and Charleston Yacht Club.

FLEET TO HOST VISITING CLUBSSubmitted by Kevin KeoghOn Saturday, March 10, the SCYC Harbor 20 fleet will host a Low Country Challenge Regatta sailing in our mem-bers’ boats in Calibogue Sound. Three members of our fleet will race against three members each from Beaufort Yacht & Sailing Club and Savannah Yacht Club.

CRUISING INTO 2012

Well, our 2012 Cruise Fleet year is under way. On February 2nd we had our first meeting of the year. We opened the year with an invitation to all SCYC members so that all could see first hand the good camaraderie that we have. We are always looking for new ideas for programs and trips and, most of all, new members to share the good times with us.

This meeting was no exception. We had over 50 people in attendance and over 40 stayed for dinner in the Chart Room. We were not sure whether the attendance was because it was our first meeting, KC

Cruising Newsby DAVID B. PIERCE, Commander

urging for boat safety inspection or our speaker, a retired Savannah River boat docking pilot. Whatever the reason we all had a good time.

The only trip that we have carved in stone at this point is the trip to Dataw Island on May 11, 12 & 13. We have other plans underway for a trip to Parris Island, via Beaufort Downtown Marina. A progres-sive trip that might include such stops as Beaufort, Dataw, Bohicket, & Charleston. We are also working on close overnights, such as Shelter Cove, Harbour Town, Daufuskie and anchor outs, such as Bull Creek and Mackey Creek.

INTERESTED IN JOINING?The Cruise Fleet meets the first Thursday of each month (except August and January) from 5:30 to about 7:00. The cost per person is $30.

Monthly program thoughts are well un-derway also. March will be a planning meeting to be participated in by all cruise fleet members plus a surprise. April will be David Lauderdale, an Island Packet columnist, who will speak about maritime history around Hilton Head plus his fa-mous story telling. We are still working on May and forward with many new ideas.

You can tell that we are very busy and would love to have more people join our ranks, either as boaters or asphalt cruisers. We meet the first Thursday evening of each month, except January and August, at 5:30 p.m. in the Chart Room. The cost is only $30 per person for the year.

The format will be fleet racing, not using team racing rules, but the overall trophy will be presented to the club with the best combined record among all three of its entrants.

On March 31 and April 1, our Harbor 20 fleet will host four crews from American Yacht Club in Rye, New York. The visi-tors will sail against four of our crews in boats loaned by our fleet members and the Club. The American Yacht Club del-egation will arrive on Friday, March 30, for a practice sail and a welcoming recep-tion at the Club. The race committee plans to run three or four races each day on Saturday and Sunday. On Saturday evening all of the competitors and non-sailing spouses and guests will gather for festive cocktails and dinner at a member’s home. Some of the visitors will depart Sunday evening after racing and others will return to New York on Monday. All of the visiting sailors and their non-sail-ing companions will be housed in homes of Harbor 20 fleet members. Spectator boats will be available for Club members who wish to watch the racing. Please let Sailing Director David Wilson know if you would like to see the racing up close from one of our spectator boats.

TRY SOMETHING NEW!Your club offers complimentary lessons for first-time member sailors. This takes place on Thursday during our group sail in our very comfortable Harbor 20s. No experience is needed. Please call 342-BOAT in advance to reserve your spot. BOAT COMMISSIONINGSInterested in commissioning your boat into the Fleet this season? Contact the club for more details!

THE MARSH KNOWSSubmitted by Fleet Captain Joe HighsmithI looked out my window this morning to see that the marsh has already decided that Spring is arriving. Yes, that bit of green emerging at the base of the marsh is proof positive that the boating season is fast approaching. In fact, by the time you read this it will once again be time to commission the Club for the 2012 season. Join us on Sunday, March 4, at 5:30 p.m. to ring in the new season.

The club has a very busy yachting sched-ule planned for this spring. Group Sail-ing has been moved to Sundays at 3 p.m. Take advantage of Thursday Learn to Sail Group Lessons. Call the club to reserve an opportunity to learn to sail one of our

club-owned Harbor 20 sailboats. Once you’re checked out, you can take one out for a spin yourself.

Speaking of Harbor 20s, the Fleet has a very ambitious schedule of racing planned; starting March 10 with the Low-country Challenge to be sailed off the ga-zebos between sailors of the SCYC, the Savannah Yacht Club, and the Beaufort Yacht and Sailing Club. The last weekend in March brings the North/South Regat-ta. This is the inaugural event of an an-nual challenge between the SCYC and the American Yacht Club of Rye, New York. Finally, May 4-6 brings the DDS&A Cup which, for the first time, will include par-ticipants from the Annapolis Yacht Club. The AYC boasts the newest Harbor 20 Fleet on the East Coast.

Your “Cruise Director” David Pierce is hard at work planning another great sea-son of fun and interesting group cruises to areas of local interest for the Cruise Fleet. This is a very active group. Con-sider joining!

In closing, heed what the marsh is telling you. Come and be a part of the on-the-water fun coming to the Club in the 2012 season.

SCYC Y KNOTS SET RECORDSubmitted by Nick CastriconeSCYC Y Knot Captain Tracy Castricone is happy to report that the Team Tennis season was packed full of excitement as the league championship came down to the final week. Our opponents squeaked by with an ever so slight winning margin of 5 games (561 to our 556) as we finished in second place. This team set many benchmarks including: our best won-loss record (9-1), our most 60 point matches (4), along with the league’s highest winning percentage in games won/lost...64%. The 64% was the best showing of any team in the 4-year history of the league! Of course, not only did we continue our win-

ning ways but we had tremendous fun along the way. Starting with our Team Tennis Kick-Off Party (special thanks to Corinne & Doug Tardio for hosting this year’s event) lots of fun after the matches and of course, our tra-ditional end of the season celebration at Wild Wing. We are most proud of the fact that the Y-Knots had the second highest number of participants in the league with 29 players!

became an Asst. Store Manager and Buyer for Crate & Barrel. A year later, Naturescapes was turned over to Mary and they moved to Woodbridge, CT, where Bob accepted his first job in the marine industry: VP Marketing for AMF Alcort, maker of the Sunfish. But, AMF was another multi-billion corporation without vision. Their Board couldn’t understand how a sailboat going a knot faster upwind would be worth investing in. So, with $20,000 and a proven design the Johnstone brothers started up J Boats, Inc. in 1977. They sold 750 J/24s in the first year with Everett Pearson as their licensed builder, 3x the first year sales of any previous boat its size.

25 years and some 50 sailboat designs later in 2002 at age 68; he founded MJM Yachts to introduce a unique easy-to-handle line of Downeast-style powerboats. Bob realized that to continue boating as a shared adven-ture with Mary…. as they were growing older, a powerboat had to be the primary cruising boat. By using high tech racing sailboat tech-nology instead of heavy powerboat methods to make a boat more agile and easy to handle: PRESTO! MJMs end up burning half the fuel of similar-sized craft. In pursuing their own needs, the Johnstones addressed similar needs of a huge following: the rapidly expanding market of aging baby-boomers, downsizing from large sail and motor boats. Not surpris-ing therefore that 2011 was a record year for MJM. There are now 133 boats in 6 countries in 4 models: 29z, 34z, 36z and 40z.

Bob graduated from Princeton in 1956 with an AB in History, marrying Mary B. McA-

Honorary Boat Commissioning Friday, March 30

ABOUT JOHNSTONEBob Johnstone (P’56) founded MJM Yachts (mjmyachts.com) while residing in Charles-ton in 2002. These Downeast-style power-boats with their remarkable fuel-efficiency and Carolina bow flare are very much in the news. Previously, Johnstone had co-founded J Boats, Inc. (jboats.com) with his brother Rodney (P’58) in 1977. He still owns half the sailboat company. Their dad, Robert Jr. (P’32) had sailed for Princeton in one of the first Intercollegiate Regattas in June of 1929.

Harvard Business School selected J/Boats as a case study in entrepreneurship and le-veraging resources. “J” is the leading brand of performance sailboats worldwide with more than 12,500 in 40+ countries, 18 of its designs have been awarded Boat-of-the Year honors, the latest being the 36’ J/111 in 2011. In 1991, Fortune Magazine named J/Boats one of America’s Best 100 Prod-ucts.

Johnstone had previously lived his own case study as Production Manager then General Manager of Quaker subsidiaries in Colom-bia and Venezuela, returning after 8 years to Chicago in brand management. There he was named Quaker’s Marketing Man of the Year, eventually becoming their “futurist” as Director of Market Strategy & Analysis. Frustrated by a corporate lack of vision and purpose beyond quarterly earnings/share gains, he resigned to start Naturescapes, Inc., a line of wall murals by leading envi-ronmental photographers. Meanwhile Mary

voy 4 days later. After a stint at Ft. Sill as an artillery officer and as a Quaker Oats trainee at the world’s largest cereal mill in Cedar Rapids IA, they were off to South America. Sailing was then limited to sum-mer vacations on Little Cranberry Island ME; chartering Hinckleys for cruises with the family, which had grown to include Stu-art, Drake, Helen and Peter. Upon returning to the US, the family crew successfully cam-paigned Rainbows, Solings, 470’s, Penguins, J/24s, J/30s, J/35s, J/44s, J/105s, etc. He has served the sport as Secretary-Treasurer of the United States Olympic Sailing Com-mittee, Founder of the United States Youth Sailing Championship, Commodore of the Northeast Harbor Fleet, Chairman of DownEast RaceWeek and Regatta Director for the Boston Harbor Islands Regatta. He is on the Advisory Board for Sailors for the Sea and actively races his new J/111 FLEE-TWING in Newport RI…when not cruis-ing with Mary on their MJM 40z ZING.

The South Carolina Yacht Club, in conjunction with the Princeton Club of Hilton Head Island, invites all members to a special forum and Boat Commissioning to honor Bob Johnstone, Princeton graduate and owner of MJM Yachts. The evening will begin with a talk on the promenade at 6:00 p.m., followed by an honor-

ary boat commissioning at 6:30 p.m. and a buffet in the Catesby Room at 7:00 p.m.

Prime Rib Buffet in the Catesby RoomJoin us for a Prime Rib Buffet in the Catesby Room after the Commissioning! The jacket requirement will be dropped on this evening and you will enjoy guaranteed seating immediately following the commissioning with your reservation.
