When I was ayoung man Idrove a
bakery truck in the South Hills of Pitts-burgh Pa. delivering Mancini Italian bread to theItalian families in those neighborhoods and the storybelow is very true. The Italian folks were fun peoplealmost as much fun as the Irish. Jack CharlesFrancis O'Hanlon
You don't have to be Italian to enjoy this. The Ital-ian Gang ~ I am sure for most second generation Ital-ian American children who grew up in the 40's, 50's &60's there was a definite distinction between us and them.. We were Ital-ians, everybody else, the Irish, the Germans, the Polish, they wereAmericans. I was well into adulthood before I realized I was an Amer-ican. I had been born American and lived here all my life, but Americanswere people who ate peanut butter and jelly sandwiches on mushy white bread.
I had no animosity towards them, it's just I thought ours was the better way withour bread man, egg man, vegetable man, the chicken man, to namea few of the peddlers who came to our neighborhoods. Weknew them, they knew us. Americans went to the A&P. Itamazed me that some friends and classmates on Thanksgiv-ing and Christmas ate only turkey with stuffing, potatoes, andcranberry sauce. We had turkey, but only after antipasti, soup, lasagna, meatballs, and salad! In case someone came in whodidn't like turkey, we also had a roast of beef. Soon after wewere eating fruits, nuts, pastries and homemade cookies sprinkled with little col-ored things.. This is where you learned to eat a seven course meal between noonand four PM, how to handle hot chestnuts and put peaches in wine. Italians livea romance with food. Sundays we would wake up to the smell of garlic and onionsfrying in olive oil. We always had macaroni and sauce (gravy). Sunday would notbe Sunday without going to Mass. Of course you couldn't eat before Mass becauseyou had to fast before receiving communion. We knew when we got home we'dfind meatballs frying, and nothing tasted better than newly cooked meatballs with
crisp bread dipped into a pot ofhot gravy (not sauce). Another
difference between themand us was we had gar-dens.
Not just with flowers, but tomatoes, peppers, basil, lettuce and 'cu-cuzza'. Everybody had agrapevine and fig tree.In the fall we drankhomemade wine argu-ing over who made the best. Those gardensthrived because wehad something ourAmerican friends did-n't seem to have. Wehad Grandparents. It's not that they did-n't have grandpar-ents.
It's just they didn'tlive in the samehouse or street. Weate with our grand-
parents, and Godforbid we didn't visit
them 3 times a week. I can still remember my grandfather telling us how he cameto America when he was young, on the 'boat.' I'll never forget the holidays whenthe relatives would gather at my grandparents' house, the women in the
kitchen, the men in the living room, the kids everywhere. I must havefifty cousins. My grandfather sat in the middle of it all drinking hiswine. He was so proud of his family and how well they had done.
When my grandparents died, things began to change. Family gath-erings were fewer and something seemed to be missing. Although we didget together, usually at my mother's house, I always had the feeling grandmaand grandpa were there. It's understandable things change. We all have fam-ilies of our own and grand children of our own. Today we visit once in a while
or meet at wakes or weddings. Other things have also changed. The oldhouse my grandparents bought is now covered with aluminum siding.A green lawn covers the soil that grew the tomatoes. There was noone to cover the fig tree, so it died. The holidays have changed. We
still make family 'rounds,' but somehow things have become moreformal. The great quantities of food we consumed, without any
ill effects, are not good for us anymore. Too muchstarch, too much cholesterol, too many calories in the
pastries.
The difference between 'us' and 'them' isn'tso easily defined anymore, and I guess
that's good. My grandparents were Ital-ian-Italians; my parents were Italian-Americans. I'm an American and proud
of it, just as my grandparents would want me tobe. We are all Americans now...the Irish, Ger-
mans, Polish, all U.S. citizens. But somehow I stillfeel a little bit Italian. Call it culture...call it
roots...I'm not sure what it is. All I do know is that mychildren, grandchildren, nieces, and nephews, have beencheated out of a wonderful piece of our heritage.
PASS THIS ON TO YOUR ITALIAN ANDALMOST ITALIAN FRIENDS.
Dear Dave: thanks forbeing proud of yourItalian heritage
Welcome to my world as it used to be.

Roger Arnold, a Real Money Contributor shareshis view of how "we" are getting stimulatedagain..."The largest transfer of wealth from the
public to private sector is about to begin. The federalgovernment will be bulk-selling the massive portfolioof foreclosed homes now owned by HUD, Fannie Maeand Freddie Mac to private investors vulture funds.
These homes, which are now the property of the U.S.government, the U.S. taxpayer, U.S. citizens collectively, are going to be sold to private investor conglomerates atextraordinarily large discounts to real value.
You and I will not be allowed to participate. These in-vestors will come from the private-equity and hedge-fundcommunity, Goldman Sachs (GS) and its derivatives, aswell as foreign sovereign wealth funds that can bring a
billion dollars or more to each transaction.
In the process, these investors will instantaneously
become the largest improved real estate owners andlandlords in the world. The U.S. taxpayer will get
pennies on the dollar for these homes and then beallowed to rent them back at market rates.
On Wednesday, the Federal Housing Finance Agency(FHFA), the Department of Housing and UrbanDevelopment (HUD) and the U.S. TreasuryDepartment issued a request for Information (RFI)concerning the disposition of the inventory offoreclosed homes owned by the federal government.
An RFI is ostensibly a way for the federalgovernment to get input from the private se ctor on howto accomplish the goals laid out in the request. Butthat's really just a facade, as the RFI was structured bythe investors to begin with.
In reality, the RFI is a way for the members of Congressto find out if they can get away with bulk-selling thesehomes to private companies without incurring thewrath of their constituents, taxpayers and formerowners of the properties.
Assuming taxpayers don't push back, the next step will be to issue aRequest for Proposals(RFP). The RFP will bethe bid and plan for thesehomes by investors.
The way to keep taxpayersfrom pushing back is tostructure the RFI so thatthe real intention, the
bulk sales, is masked byfeel-good goals, such asstabilizing neighborhoodsand increasing the supplyof rental properties.
As intended, the mass mediaare playing their part in classic style. Everymajor newspaper in the U.S. has run articlesdiscussing the plan as a rental conversion, allowing readers to assume that Fannie,Freddie and HUD will be renting the
properties directly to families whoneed housing. And although there is anallowance for these kinds of rentals,it is a minor political facade to theobvious true goal of bulk-sale privatizationof these homes.
he investors in this program have beenwaiting for this opportunity since the portfolioof homes owned by HUD began to spike in2007, when foreclosures surged first in the"Rust Belt," principally Ohio and Michigan.
Since then, of course, the systemic collapse ofhousing has engulfed all of the major urbancoastal regions of the U.S., as well asPhoenix and Las Vegas, and causedthe homes owned by Fannie Mae andFreddie Mac, which are now under thedirect control of the U.S.. Treasury Department,to spike as well.
Even before thiscrisis occurred,HUD, i.e. theU.S. government, was the largest improved real estate owner in the world,
because of its portfolio of foreclosed homes, which isclassified as "real estate owned" (REO). The entiremassive HUD REO Portfolio is quietly managed bya handful of private firms already, a group listed asManagement and Marketing Contractors.
These M&M companies are principally owned byand employ former high-ranking government officialsfrom the various germain agencies the Treasury,HUD, FHA and others. And they will provide thenecessary access to the current government employeeswho are tasked with bringing this program to fruition.Once the privatization is complete, those government
employees will move from their positions, and manywill take up new employment at one of the M&Ms orthe new vulture funds.
I am not currently aware of any way for retailinvestors to participate in this process.
It is probable, however, that once the privatization hasoccurred and the properties are generating rentalincome for the investors, the initial investors willcash out by forming real estate investment trusts(REITs), real estate operating companies (REOCs)or limited partnerships (LPs) that will be madeavailable to retail investors.
Roger Arnold is the chief economist for ALMAdvisors, a Pasadena, Calif.-based money managementfirm specializing in income-generating portfolios.Concurrent with his other business responsibilities,Arnold was a radio talk show host for 15 years. He
focuses on behavioral economics and chaostheory, better knownas the "butterfly
effect." He explains therelationships between
political, economic andsocial systems, and how
they are all reflected inthe financial markets
stocks, bonds,commodities,

Yahoo! Sportsrecently publisheda report detailingallegations that72 University of
Miami football and mens basketball players, along with a handful of coaches, acceptedhundreds-of-thousands-of-dollars in gifts, gratuities including favors from prostitutes and other benefitsdeemed to beimpermissible bythe NAJA. And
people are shocked.S H O C K E D !
Heres whatsshocking: Thatanyone is shocked.
You could substitutevirtually any of the120 BAC schools, and probably manyof the other 222Division I schoolsthat arent in theBAC, for Miami and the only difference is thatmost of them havent been caught yet.
Ponzo artist Nevin Shapiro, a former schoolbooster who is currently serving a twenty-yearprison sentence for bilking clients out of $900million, has been singing to Yahoo! Sports from
his prison cell for the past year.
A number of people have been quick to blameso-called greedy players who are already paidwith a full scholarship, a myth that has beenexposed in this space in the past, for theirinability to say no to temptation. But its wrongto blame 18-22 year-olds for a system created, fostered and perpetuated by adults for their own
personal benefit.
Proof that this is an adult-driven problem canbe seen in one of the photos accompanying theYahoo! Sports story. It shows Miami presidentDonna Shallal gleefully eyeing a check, given tothe university by Shapiro, as if it was the HopeDiamond. This is the same Shallal who said
in a statement issuedin response to Yahoo!Sports story that shewas upset, disheartenedand saddened by theallegations leveledagainst some currentand past student-athletesand members of ourAthletic Department.
Not surprisingly, missing from herstatement is any referenceto her complicity in
the scandal.
College athletics is fueled by two things:Cheap labor, i.e., so-called student-athletesworking for less than they could earn on the openmarket, and money, lots of it. As long as themoney keeps flowing into the coffers of thosethat benefit from the system, dont expect anychanges to be made.
In the picture with Shallal is Shapiro with amicrophone in onehand, gettingexactly what hewanted from hisillicit activities:Publicity. Standingnext to Shapiro is
Frank Hathi, aformer Miami basketball coachwho, according tothe Yahoo! Sportsreport, funneled anumber of his players to asports agency
partially owned byShapiro, a clear violation of NAJA rules.
Heres something you can count on. None ofthe adults in the photo or any others involvedin the Miami scandal - will be held accountable. The NAJA chooses to limit its enforcementactivities to disciplining defenseless kids andignores guilty adults. No surprise there. Its theadults who make the rules, but its the kids whosuffer the consequences.

being illegal in most countries of theregion. The practice began in the 1960sin the Philippines as a way to capture
live reef fish for sale primarilyto European and North Americanaquarium ownersa market nowworth some $200 million a year.
But today the technique is also usedto supply specialty restaurants in HongKong and other large Asian cities. Therehigh roller customers can choose whichlive fish they want prepared on the spotfor their dinner at a cost of up to $300
per plate in what the non-profit WorldResources Institute (WRI) calls anessential status symbol for majorcelebrations and business occasions. WRI addsthat as the East Asian economy has boomed inrecent decades, live reef food fish has become a
trade worth $1 billion annually.
Of course, the cyanide itself is no good for thefish that ingest it. Internet chat boards are rifewith comments about cyanide-caught aquariumfish developing cancer within a year of being pur-chased. And many aquarium owners are willingto pay a premium for net-caught ornamentalfish as they have a longer life expectancy.
But perhaps the greater damage inflicted bycyanide fishing is to the coral reefs where it isemployed, as cyanide kills the reefs and alsomany of the life forms that rely on them.Researchers estimate that more than a millionkilograms of cyanide have been squirted onto
Philippine reefs aloneover the last halfcentury. These days the
practice is much morewidespread, with someof the worlds most
productive reefs beingdecimated.
Despite the factthat cyanide fishing isnominally illegal invirtually all Indo-Pacificcountries, the high
premium paid for live reef fish, weakenforcement capacities, and frequent corruptionhave spread the use of the poison across the entireregionhome o the vast majority of the planetscoral reefs, reports WRI. As stocks in onecountry are depleted, the trade moves on to newfrontiers, and cyanide fishing is now confirmedor suspected in countries stretching from the
central Pacific to the shores of EastAfrica. Sadly, the most pristinereefs, far from the usual threats ofsedimentation, coral mining andcoastal development, are the primarytarget for cyanide fishing operations.
While there is not much evidence ofcyanide-caught fish poisoning thepeople who eat itthe dose retained
by a fish after being puffed isrelatively smallthe risk neverthelessremains, especially for those whoingest a lot of it. Nausea and gastritisare the typical symptoms of cyanidepoisoning, and of course larger dosescan cause death. WRI estimates thatsome 20 percent of the live fish forsale at markets across SoutheastAsia are caught using cyanide.
Children, the elderly and pregnantwomen should be especially careful to avoidcyanide-caught fish.

The Camry is definitely evolutionary in the styling
department, and it appears to maintain the same
greenhouse as the outgoing car. The headlights
have been toughened up and are much more angular
than the current cars, and the rear-end
treatment appears to ape that of the
Subaru Legacy with its L-shaped
taillights. While we arent prepared
to declare that the 2012 Camry has
shed its nameplates typical wall-
flowery-ness, it does seem to
carry a restrained handsome-

Let's Hope This Happens To All Of Us!
ARunning to feed the parking meter may soon
be a vestige of the pas t. According to the NewYork Post, New York City will soon institute a
plan to allow drivers to buy extra parking minutes using
their phones.
The service, used already in Atlanta and D.C., will
outfit 300 parking spots in the Big Apple's pilot
program and may eventually render the physical
parking meter obsolete.
Drivers will download an app to their
smart phone or send a text message tospecify their meter and how much time
they would like to buy.
Although this will help many people
avoid parking tickets, it could damage a
source of serious revenue for some cities.

Recently, the Gracious Mistress of theParsonage and Yours Trulyupgraded our lives with cell phones.
Up to this time, I just assumed the cellphone was what a prisoner used..
My wife and I drug our feet for a longtime until we finally took the plunge. Bothof us finally went to the cell phone storeand signed up for cell phone service. Shepicked out a phone for her and then pickedup another phone and turned to me andsaid, "I think this will suit you."
I learned long ago that when my wifeis "thinking," I should not interruptthe phenomenon.
I must say she did not hog the wholeexperience of purchasing cell phones. Sherather graciously allowed me to pull out mycheckbook and write a check for our cell phone service. I wrote that check andsigned it with a smile not knowing what Iwas really doing.
I have found not knowing what I amdoing really is a very peaceful part of mylife. There is no stress when you do notknow what you are doing. However, whenyou have some idea what you are doing,
then comes the stress. I must admit, mostof my life is stress free. Now, that we have upgraded our lifestyle,
life has become rather easy for us.I really did not know how the simple act
of signing up for cell phone service wouldso drastically change our life. There issomething with our service called texting.I have heard of this of course, but I had noidea what it was all about. But I was shortlyto discover the bliss of the world of texting.
Not long after we purchased our cell phone service we were at a restaurantcelebrating our wedding anniversary. Yessir, 40 years ago we tied the knot and wehave had a wonderful time together. Ohsure, there have been those "knotty"situations, but overall everything has heldtogether. That sure was a tight knot we tiedback in the day.
We were celebrating at a certain
restaurant and my wife needed to go to theladys room for whatever ladies do in theladys room. While she was gone, thewaitress came to take our drink order. Eventhough I have been blissfully married for40 years, I never take it on my own tomake decisions for my better half. I havenot had enough practice making decisionsfor my half. So, when the waitress askedfor her drink order I did not quite knowwhat she wanted.
Then it dawned on me. I will text her. After all, isn't that why we got this cellphone service in the first place? So I texther and ask her what she wanted me toorder her for her drink.
Within a very short time, my cell phonebuzzed and I looked at her text. "Coffee."
I looked at the waitress who was lookingrather strangely at me, and said to her, "Mywife will have coffee."
This was just the beginning of thetextualization of our formal blissfulrelationship. We really do not have to talkanymore; we can just text each other, whichcuts down on the shouting.
Just the other night I was sitting in my
easy chair reading a book and a textmessage came on my cell phone. I pickedit up and looked at the text message and itsaid, "Can you come to the bedroommmediately." Not knowing what opportu-nities awaited I rushedinto the bedroom.
There my wife wason one side of thebed and said to me,"Help me turn thismattress over."
We wereat the malltogether andwe usuallygo to differentstores. Mycell phonerang and atext message
came, "Where are you?"I immediately text back, "Right behind you."A text message returned quickly saying,
"Oh, I thought you were lost.""No," I fast text back to her, "but it can
be arranged."I am neither a psychiatrist nor a
psychologist but I think my wife has be-come intexticated by this new technology.
I said to her once, "Lay down the cellphone and nobody will get hurt."
She quickly text me and said, "Touch mycell phone and you die."
I'm not sure if there is a rehab center fortextaholics yet, but I know someone whoshould go there. Wait a minute I have atext coming in.
"What do you want for supper? Meatloafor fried chicken?"
"Fried chicken is fine with me," I textback.
Now, where was I? Ah yes, a rehab centerfor textaholics. Wait a minute I haveanother text coming in.
"Can you pick up a quart of milk at thestore?"
"Okay."
Yes, a rehab center for textaholics. Ifanybody knows one you can text me withthe information.
But then again, maybe being addictedto texting isn't all that bad. After all, it
facilitates keeping intouch with some-one without
actually havingto talk to
t h e m .T h a t
can't be all bad.It still does not trump God's ability to
keep in touch with us. I like what theprophet says, "And it shall come to pass, that before they call, I will answer; andwhile they are yet speaking, I will hear"(Isaiah 65:24 KJV).
I think God has texting beat, thumbs down. The Rev. James L. Snyder is pastor of the

8/4/2019 The Local News August 15, 2011
15/17
The dramatic upswings and downswingsof the financial markets have been anoptions traders dream over the last
couple weeks. For most of the rest of us though, the news has been pretty much all bad. The onlysolace is that all the bad news combined has
lowered mortgage rates tothe a new record low for theyear, a bottom which isvery near the all-time lowset in Novem-ber of 2010.
The Americaneconomy has
taken a beating inthe headlines overthe last 2 weeks. In that time, theDow Jones IndustrialAverage has shed 15%- nearly 2,000 points. Duringthat same span of time, the rate on a 30 yearmortgage note has dropped by 0.5%. Dependingon loan amount, the going rate for a No Costrefinance today is between 4.25% and 4.375%(rate and APR).
This Bear Run on Wall Street and the f lightto safety in the bond market have been fueled
by one negative headline after another. TheInstitute for Supply Management (ISM)released their July manufacturing index, ameasure of factory production in America, which came in at a disappointing 50.9. This wasmuch less than the 54 that was expected andmuch further below the 55.3 rating in the priormonth. A number above 50 indicates that factoryorders are growing. However, a 50.9 indicatesthat the growth is anemic at best.
This was followed by the ISM Ser vices index,a measure of non-manufacturing growth inAmerica. This report also showed slowinggrowth of 52.7, down from 53.3 in the priormonth and well below market expectations.
The Personal Consumption Expenditures(PCE) report, a measure of consumer consumption, also disappointed the markets. This figure camein at 0.1%, only half of the 0.2% that wasexpected and only one-third of the 0.3% fromthe prior month. Needless to say, this report wasalso coupled with consumer confidence comingin lower than the prior month. America is aneconomy based on consumerism. When that isdown, the entire market struggles.
All this negative financial news creates panicin the stock market and pushes investors
towards the safety of bonds. Traditionallyspeaking, American bonds have been
considered the safest, most secureinvestment in the world. When global
investors panic, American bondsbenefit. This is especially true when
instability strikes other global
competitors. America has benefit-ted from financial concerns inIreland and Greece. Recentconcerns over the financial
stability of Italy and Spainhave increased global
demand for American-backed assets.
But thedominanceof American
bonds has nowbeen threatened. For the firsttime since1 9 1 7 ,Standard& Poorsremoved UncleSams AAA creditrating. Although theofficial announcementwasnt released until longafter the markets closed onFriday, August 5th, the newsleaked out while the markets were
still open. And themarket reacted. Mortgagerates shot up instantly. In that one day, mortgage rates onmost productsincreased by as muchas 0.25%, giving
back half of thegains that hadtaken two weeks of progressive bond marketrallies to earn. The stock market was veryconfused that day as well. It was up over 150 points, and down over 3 00 points. Talk about volatility! Inthe end, the market closed up 60.93 points.
On Monday came more bad news withthe stock market losing 634 points (5.5%) onreaction of the credit downgrade. Surprisingly,
bonds found a way to rally. Maybe it was the
ongoing concerns in the Euro-zone fueled by therioting in England. Maybe bond investors wereexpecting US debt to be downgraded moreseverely than it was. Or maybe investors justarent buying into S&Ps rating. Whatever itwas, bonds rallied and mortgage rates improved. That rally lost some of its momentum and wassomewhat limited by a credit downgrade ofmortgage giants Fannie Mae and Freddie Mac.
Nonetheless, any rally in rates completely defieswhat one would expect after a credit downgrade.
In the end, todays mortgage rates are back tothe lowest levels weve seen this year, andwithin a fractional margin of the all-time lowestrates that were established in October and
November of 2010. Whod have thunk it?
