With external competition intensifying, Hong Kong must work

hard to increase its lead as Asia’s sourcing hub and trade fair

capital. Three more TDC fairs – for gifts, fashion and jewellery

– moved up in world rankings. Seven are now in the world’s top

three for their industries. We also continued to build critical

mass on our online sourcing platform, which handled more

than eight million trade enquiries.

Trade fairsTDC’s 19 trade fairs set new records in 2005/06. They are

exceptionally international. More than half the buyers and

nearly half the exhibitors are from outside Hong Kong. Despite

space constraints at the CEC, we continued to raise the bar

for service at our fairs, setting new standards for the industry

as a whole. We enhanced value-adding features, such as

product and market trend surveys, in addition to offering buyers

downtown convenience and much-appreciated hospitality.

Focus on creative industries The first Innovation & Design Expo, held concurrently with

World SME Expo, instantly became a global marketplace

for ideas, technology, branding and design. Hong Kong

Entertainment Expo was an even bigger success in its second

year, with outstanding results at TDC’s 10th FILMART, the

business platform for Hong Kong’s entertainment industry.

Both versions of Hong Kong Fashion Week, in January and July,

continued to showcase local designer talent to international

buyers and fashion media.

New fairs for new industries It was a pivotal year for developing the six new trade fairs

TDC will launch next year, in partnership with the private

sector, to serve a wider range of Hong Kong industries with

export potential. They include auto parts, printing/packaging,

furniture, building materials and environmental equipment.

TDC’s public fairs – the Hong Kong Book Fair and the Hong

Kong Food Fair – meant serious business for exhibitors and

family fun for visitors. Together, they pulled in more than

940,000 people from across Hong Kong plus a significant

number of visitors from Guangdong, where we stepped up

marketing. These events are becoming increasingly important

as brand-building platforms for Hong Kong companies

targeting mainland consumers.

Online sourcingTDC’s efforts to bring buyers and suppliers together online

were stepped up with our enhanced Sourcing Guide. Hosted

on tdctrade.com, this customer-focused platform features

express enquiry services and online exhibitions for buyers

unable to visit our trade fairs physically. It draws on a database

of more than 100,000 suppliers in Hong Kong and the Greater

China region, and over 600,000 registered buyers around the

world.

Product magazines TDC’s 14 product-specific magazines continued to fulfil

a need of thousands of overseas buyers to access quality

product sourcing information in print. Special effort was

made to expand circulation to buyers in emerging markets.

We also produced foreign-language supplements (see pages

43 and 51).

Design showcaseThe TDC Design Gallery, strategically located in the CEC

concourse close to hotels and major trade fairs, received a

facelift. It is brighter, busier and trendier than ever, reinforcing

Hong Kong’s position as a source of innovative, branded

products with original design.

World-ranking fairsThe number of buyers and exhibitors

at TDC trade fairs has roughly

doubled over a five-year period.

Despite space constraints at the

venue, TDC’s mega fairs continue to

grow and move up the world league

table (see charts opposite).
