THE LINK Malachi L ast Sunday, after three years, with a short break or two along the way, and switching the series from the evening to the morning (August 3, 2014), the sermon series on Luke drew to an end. We began the series on March 17, 2013 with Luke 1:1-4, “An Orderly Account.” It has been a delight to study the life and ministry of Jesus as Luke presents it. With the completion of Luke I have now preached through all four of the Gospels. Completion, that is, of a series; one can never “complete” any book of the Bible so as to be “done” with it. With Luke we have scarcely scratched the surface. I reserve the right to preach from Luke again at any time. But as a particular se- ries, it has reached an end. Which raises the question, what next? What’s next is the book of Malachi — the final book of the Old Testament. Malachi is one of the so-called “minor prophets.” Minor in length, but not minor in importance — or relevance. Marriage concerns, money problems, bad religion, corrupt minis- ters, various social problems, disillusionment and discouragement among the people of God — sound familiar? They do, but I am re- ferring to Malachi’s time. The book follows a distinct “disputational” format, in which God asserts a truth to the people, the people question or challenge that assertion, and then the Lord responds to that question or challenge. I encourage you to read through the book a time or two — it’s just four chapters — prior to or during the study. The format and the topical themes will be plain. Where Luke spanned years, our study of Malachi will be much briefer — a matter of weeks. This will be my first time to preach through Malachi, but I have had my eye on it for some time. I am looking forward to studying and preaching Malachi. Please pray for me that the Lord would bless my preparation and our times together in the word to his glory and to our growth in grace. Malachi
L ast Sunday, after three years, with a short break or two
along the way, and switching the series from the evening
to the morning (August 3, 2014), the sermon series on Luke
drew to an end. We began the series on March 17, 2013 with
Luke 1:1-4, “An Orderly Account.”
It has been a delight to study the life and ministry of Jesus as Luke
presents it. With the completion of Luke I have now preached
through all four of the Gospels. Completion, that is, of a series; one
can never “complete” any book of the Bible so as to be “done” with
it. With Luke we have scarcely scratched the surface. I reserve the
right to preach from Luke again at any time. But as a particular se-
ries, it has reached an end.
Which raises the question, what next? What’s next is the book of
Malachi — the final book of the Old Testament. Malachi is one of
the so-called “minor prophets.” Minor in length, but not minor in
importance — or relevance.
Marriage concerns, money problems, bad religion, corrupt minis-
ters, various social problems, disillusionment and discouragement
among the people of God — sound familiar? They do, but I am re-
ferring to Malachi’s time.
The book follows a distinct “disputational” format, in which God
asserts a truth to the people, the people question or challenge that
assertion, and then the Lord responds to that question or challenge.
I encourage you to read through the book a time or two — it’s just
four chapters — prior to or during the study. The format and the
topical themes will be plain.
Where Luke spanned years, our study of Malachi will be much
briefer — a matter of weeks. This will be my first time to preach
through Malachi, but I have had my eye on it for some time. I am
looking forward to studying and preaching Malachi. Please pray for
me that the Lord would bless my preparation and our times together
in the word to his glory and to our growth in grace.
