Leader of the BandConstruction Manager Jason Adams leads Team 9, a group of students from Ravenwood High School in Franklin, Tennessee, as they participate in the ACE Mentor Program of Greater Nashville. Under the guidance of Jason and Project Engineer Daniel Whitten, the group came up with a sure-fire hit with their design of a guitar-shaped bus shelter.

COVER STORYThe ACE Mentor Program introduces high school students to the diverse careers available in architecture, construction and engineering. Jason has served as a mentor for four years and Daniel for two. The student teams design a project, tour job sites and meet with professionals. The theme for this year’s project was “Shelter.” Team 9 brainstormed what a shelter could be,
including houses, garages – even a bomb shelter – and eventually they chose a bus shelter. They expanded their idea into a much larger project of a covered walkway in downtown Nashville. The creative young minds then hit on the brilliant design of a giant guitar with the bus shelter/walkway serving as a bridge spanning one side of Broadway Street to the other.

“The idea of the guitar design for the bus stop was to follow along with the theme of ‘Music City’,” Jason said, adding that working with the students has been very enjoyable. “The students have been amazing to work with. The meetings and events are conducted after school, and the students sign up for the program voluntarily. Many of the students are proficient in CAD and Revit which they start learning in 10th grade.”
The teams presented their projects at the 13th Annual ACE Scholarship Banquet on April 23, where Layton Vice President Cris Bryant offered remarks. “I often speak about what students can expect,” Cris said, “I enjoy teaching them about the options within the industry and with subcontractors.”

COVER STORYCris has also been instrumental in teaching students about in-state educational options such as the new Building Science program at the University of Tennessee, where an ACE specific scholarship has been set up for middle Tennessee students.
“The students benefit by gaining real world architectural, construction and engineering experience,” Jason said. “They are offered the opportunity to compete for scholarships each year. They also benefit by making contacts within our industry in Nashville, and many of them find their way back to Nashville working with these various contacts. I have benefited from the program by being able to expose young minds to the construction industry which I enjoy being a part of.”
“Participating in ACE is very rewarding for mentors as we are able to educate students outside the classroom and offer students a special glimpse into the field of study that they hope to pursue,” Daniel said. “As industry professionals, we are in the best position to offer guidance and motivation to students interested in various design and construction fields.” Commenting on their specific project, Daniel said, “There’s no scoring, but we like to think ours is the best.”

Backing Budding BuildersEach year Layton helps develop construction management at the college level by sponsoring the annual Associated Schools of Construction (ASC) Student Competition.
The 28th annual event was held in February in Reno, Nevada. It’s the largest construction management student competition in the U.S., with 1,300 competitors forming 178 teams from 44 universities across 14 states.
Layton was proud to host the mixed-use construction challenge, with nine student teams competing. Using the Outlets at San Clemente as an example, Layton required the teams to submit an RFQ, respond to an RFP and prepare for an interview – all within 24 hours.
The nine teams were from BYU-Idaho (two teams), BYU, Boise State University, Utah Valley University, Weber State University, Northern Arizona University, Montana State University and Colorado State University.
Layton’s Michael George, Ryan Pfeifer, Cooper Darling, Phil Berry, Jordon Gillman and Nikki Lux act as judges for the mixed-use construction problem at the Associated Schools of Construction (ASC) Student Competition in Reno.

Layton Employees Inspire Utah Students With the help of local AEC professionals, a group of Utah students researched, designed and presented a concept for a future high school that included a formal proposal, Revit models, CAD drawings and a physical model. The effort was part of the national High School of the Future Competition. Layton Corporate Marketing Manager Travis Wilson and Vice President Whitney Walter are founding members of ACE Mentor Program’s Utah Affiliate and helped guide the students through the different phases of preparation and execution.
Also in Utah, Senior Project Manager Paul Adams presented on Jobs in Construction to Brighton High School students over two sessions at the Salt Lake City school earlier this year.

We Wish Dale Henningsen a Happy RetirementEstimator Dale Henningsen and wife Mary celebrate at his retirement party earlier this year. Dale started working for Layton in 2006.

Donovan Correctional Facility Group Shows Its Heart With Donations to Rady Children’s Hospital FoundationSundt Layton Team Donates 100 Activity Kits to Benefit Children at the Hospital
Sundt Layton team members from the R.J. Donovan Correctional Facility in Otay Mesa, California, recently donated more than 100 activity kits for Rady Children’s Hospital in San Diego.
The kits are filled with games, toys, coloring books and stickers. Nurses give them to young patients and their siblings who are spending long hours at the hospital.
Sundt Layton contributed $500, and job site workers donated another $500 in cash. Owner’s representatives, subcontractors and suppliers also contributed. In the end, the volunteers donated both money and the kits to the Rady Children’s Hospital Foundation.
The whole idea for the event started with Sundt Layton Project EMT Luke Brown. Luke heard that carpenter Josue Carrillo’s little girl, Clarissa, was making trips to
the hospital for a heart condition. Luke wanted to show the team’s support and contacted the hospital to ask what was needed. They requested activity kits. Sundt Layton team members Ed Izatt, Pauline Dravet, Luke Brown, Jamie Weston and Gary
Weston, plus Luke’s wife Jessica and Josue’s wife, Claudia, and daughters, Clarissa and Alesandra, joined together on a Saturday to assemble the kits. The best moment of the day came when Clarissa handed the donation checks to the hospital.
