WELCOME TO THE 39TH ANNUAL

NORFOLK HARBORFEST® 2015

THE HISTORY OF NORFOLK HARBORFEST®

It began almost 40 years ago when the Norwegian Tall Ship Christian Radich came to call on Norfolk, a waterfront community that had no city-owned property on which to dock a ship. The ship was docked three blocks from Town Point at the National Oceanic and Atmospheric Administration and 13,000 people crossed her gangway in just one and a half days. Over the next two years, City planners and leaders created berthing to accommodate more ships, and a waterfront public park was planned. Norfolk Harborfest® was born. Today, tall ships from all over the world frequently call on the City of Norfolk and nearly half a million visitors gather on the downtown waterfront each year for this annual celebration of our region’s rich nautical heritage. The traditions of the East Coast’s Premier Waterfront Festival are celebrated with nautical history, maritime events, visiting vessels, children’s activities, local, regional and national entertainment. Festivities stretch from The Waterside Festival Marketplace to the Historic Freemason Harbor.

GENERAL INFORMATIONWelcome Center, Information, Guest Services and Security OfficeThe Norfolk Harborfest® Welcome Centers are all-inclusive guest services stations located adjacent to Nauticus and next to the Waterside Festival Marketplace. Guest services include ATM, Lost and Found, directions, information, program schedules and security questions.

Lost and FoundLost and found items can be reported at the Welcome Centers adjacent to Nauticus and next to the Waterside Festival Marketplace. Parents with lost children are also asked to check in with the Welcome Centers or the nearest uniformed police officer. No public address announcements regarding lost persons or items will be made during the event.

31st Annual Chesapeake Bay Workboat Parade and RacesFor over a century the Chesapeake Bay workboats have been used as transportation to and from the waters where these men make their living. The Chesapeake Bay Workboats are the official Virginia State Boats. Because of the decline in the seafood industry, the Chesapeake Bay waters that once flourished with these beautiful handmade boats has become a scarce sight. The Chesapeake Bay Workboat Parade on Saturday, June 6 at 2:30pm highlights the creative decorating skills of the Watermen and their families as they dress their clam boats, crab boats and oyster boats to the “T” for this great family showcase! Be sure to come back on Sunday, June 7 12:30pm to witness the power (450 Horsepower) of these boats as they race down the Elizabeth River. The Chesapeake Bay Workboat Race at Harborfest is an event that the Watermen prepare for all year long. The races are serious competitions that allow the heat winners a full year of bragging rights. Sponsors: Smithfield Detailing & Pressure Washing, Chesapeake Bay Crab Pots, Fink’s Truck & Collision Center, Water Solutions, Marie & Theodore Parish, Treavor Green, Mark’s Glass, Bailey Jewelers, The Deadrise Restaurant, Pagan River Dockside Seafood, All Virginia Environmental Solutions, Custom Wood Products of Va, York Haven Marina, B&C Seafood, and Britt Chapman.

Tug MusterThe muscle men of the harbor bring their tugboats out for an all out demonstration of power in the popular Tug Muster Saturday, June 6 at 4:30pm in the Elizabeth River. This “bragging-rights” competition will get your heart racing as the tugs dance in the river and show off their skills!

We celebrate those innovations in a most delicious way, with our craft-it-yourself Crush Cocktail Club.

Its easy, and delicious. You get a mason jar with crushed ice and from there, fill it with your choice of hand-selected and scores of juices then garnish with toppings from classic to crazy. It’s a great way to toast Virginia and the start of the summer season. The cocktail club is located beside the boardwalk arcade.

NEW! The Real Mermaids! Watch as the curtains open to reveal ancient spirits of the deep, creatures thought to exist only in the shimmering mirage of the open ocean. Spotted by sailors for thousands of years in the breaking waves of their ships, these illusive beauties are now brought to you from the far corners of the earth. Their mystical songs will reveal stories of old that will warm the hearts and enchant the souls of all who dare to listen. Return to an age of magic, where myth blurs with reality and witness the real life mermaids. The Mermaids will be appearing every hour on the hour until sunset throughout the weekend.

New! The World’s Largest PotatoBe sure to check out the world’s largest potato on wheels which embarked on its fourth cross-country tour to new cities, traveling 22,087 miles and helping dozens of charities better serve their communities. It began in 2012 as a one-year campaign to celebrate the 75th Anniversary of the Idaho Potato Commission and became quickly apparent with its success that it would be more than a one-year occurrence; it literally became a big piece of pop-culture.

US Navy Reserve Centennial CommemorationThe Navy Reserve celebrated 100 years of service this past March 3, 2015. Looking back, the Navy Reserve has served in every conflict since World War I. The Navy Reserve contributed 84 percent of the Navy’s manpower during World War II operations and continues to provide support across the world. More than 52,000 Navy Reserve Sailors have been mobilized and deployed to serve in Iraq and Afghanistan, including more than 8,000 Navy Reserve Sailors who have done a second combat tour in overseas hostile locations. Today, at least 20,000 Navy Reserve Sailors, or about one third of the Navy’s Reserve Component, are providing fully integrated global operational support to all numbered Fleet and Combatant Commanders. The Navy Reserve Centennial Commemoration (NRCC) provides an opportunity to highlight and reflect back on the Navy Reserve’s extraordinary Sailors past and present. Our rare milestone allows us also to bring attention to the American public about the value of the Navy Reserve Citizen Sailors and serves to also thank our employers and our families for their support of the Navy Reserve. For more information on the history and heritage of the Navy Reserve as well as current Sailor stories and upcoming Centennial events, please visit www.navyreservecentennial.com.

Crossing the BarSunset and evening star,

And one clear call for me!And may there be no moaning of the bar,

When I put out to sea,

But such a tide as moving seems asleep,Too full for sound and foam,

When that which drew from out the boundless deepTurns again for home.

Twilight and evening bell,And after that the dark!

And may there be no sadness or farewell,When I embark;

For tho’ from out our bourne of Time and PlaceThe flood may bear me far,

I hope to see my Pilot face to faceWhen I have crost the bar

-Lord Alfred Tennyson
