Principal’s Update: SBAC testing begins next week. You have not had a lot of emails about it because we work to keep the stress of our state testing low. There is a lot of media attention drawn to “high stakes testing” and how much testing students are subjected to. As a result, there is often backlash against standardized testing. At Laguna, we know this rhetoric exists, so we work hard to ensure our students are learning not because we want them to do well on any given test, but because the learning is important. We don’t work to “teach to the test” or take excessive practice tests to “get our students used to” taking standardized tests. This isn’t teaching for mastery, it’s just teaching about testing. We work to focus on “Mastery, not Memory.” This is why many teachers have re-take policies or offer students multiple modalities through which students can show what they know. Many of our teachers are switching to mastery-based grading as well; a student can have a low grade until they’ve mastered the content. Once they have mastered the content, the low grades change to reflect mastery. The CAASP (or SBAC) test is a way of measuring how our students are doing in meeting the state standards. We know this is but one small snapshot of how our students are doing on any given day, but it is a fairly good representation of how well our students have mastered what we wanted them to. The SBAC is based on the state standards all of us are using in our classrooms. The tests are not timed, adjust to the abilities of the students, and are written in such a way as to give us a good look at our students reasoning and thinking rather than just simple regurgitation of facts. We will be encouraging all of our students to work their hardest to show what they have learned this year. The information we gain from standardized testing shows us where we, as teachers, may need to offer more instruction or practice and allows us the data we need to improve the quality of education here at Laguna. We feel our students are going into this test well-prepared and ready to show us what they know. Please encourage your child to try hard each day, eat a good breakfast, and get plenty of sleep this week! I want to remind all students to register their bikes - it is quick and simple and the info often overlooked until you need it. stress of our state testing low. There is a lot of media attention drawn to “high stakes testing” and how

Around School:

Mrs. Carlin’s Family and Consumer Science classes did a

school favorite project: the Snickerdoodle lab. Students filled

the school with the smell of sugar and cinnamon while

baking these delicious treats. Just in time for Mother’s Day,

Have your student whip up a batch!

Mrs. Dellinger’s students held Socratic seminars concerning

John Steinbeck’s novel The Pearl. Students discussed the

symbolism, relevance, and thematic elements of the story.

Each student researched nine topics and was tasked with

creating two statements and a question to inspire further

discussion with their classmates. One favorite quote from a

Student in first period was, "Steinbeck was really smart

because there are many different levels of conflict in this book."

Thank you to all who came out to open house! The evening was a wonderful celebration of

all we do with our students every day here at Laguna. Parents, students, and the community

had the opportunity to view student art and other projects, listen to our band, watch student

plays, see student work, participate in science experiments, challenge one another with math

puzzles, and watch our 8th grade students do their line dances. The pictures in the newsletter

only give us the smallest glimpse of what we do on a daily basis here at Laguna.

Thanks to all who helped make Bike to School Day a huge success at Laguna. This was our

best attended event yet. We had 65 students bike to school on Wednesday. Students received

stickers and pencils and the Mayor even rode with us! Her attendance was certainly a boon

to our event. We even made the evening news:

for-bike-to-school-day

Our Dungeons and Dragons club meets to work their

Characters through a dungeon filled with pitfalls and

treasures. Mr. Townsend acts as a dungeon master for this

imaginative and enthusiastic group of students!

Mayor’s Award for Community Service - 2019 “Ask not what your country can do for you - ask what you can do for your country.” President John F.

Kennedy

On Tuesday, May 7, 2019, 57 students were honored with The Mayor’s Award for Community

Service. The award is presented to students who completed 30 hours or more of community service.

Some enthusiastic Lancers completed over 100 hours! The students recognized are in a sense the very

fibers of our strong, vital, healthy, safe community.

Initially, students received a commemorative pin and certificate at a ceremony at the Ludwick Center.

The award, annually coordinated by staff member Mila Vujovich-La Barre, is a wonderful way to

honor the integrity, determination, passion, and compassion of the students.

At the ceremony, San Luis Obispo Police Chief Deanna Cantrell offered words of inspiration for the

honorees. Council Member Andy Pease was able to join the Lancer administration, Principal John

Calandro, and Vice-Principal Scott Schalde, and SLO Police Chief Cantrell to congratulate the

students. The teens were then escorted to City Hall where they were honored by Mayor Heidi Harmon

and fellow Council Members for their hard work. A superb group photo on the steps of City Hall and a

selfie with Mayor Harmon completed the evening!

It was a pleasure to witness the metamorphosis of these committed teens during the year. Through

volunteering, many of these young people honed their interpersonal and organizational skills, time

management, and critical thinking skills which will serve them well in their future. Their volunteer

hours also provided them with self-confidence and new hands-on skills andbenefited numerous non-

profits in our community. These volunteer hours were made possible by the non-profits in the

community that continue to welcome student volunteers, and parents that entrusted their children to

other positive adult mentors in the community.

It was an evening that provided everyone great hope and optimism!

Track Update: We concluded our one home meet this season at SLO High. It was a great meet, and we had a

combination of great conditions, exciting performances, and phenomenal community support. Ideal

weather throughout the day coupled with the hard work our team has been putting in led to great

performances in a very competitive field of athletes from across the Central Coast.

With this meet being a home meet, I can not express my gratitude enough to both you and my coaches

for helping make this event possible. The combination of polite and increasingly self directed athletes,

and phenomenal coaching support led to our team, once again, being complimented by many teams at

the meet. It also made it possible for me to help facilitate timing and meet management. This meet

continues to increase in size. With increased size comes considerable additional logistical

complications. That said, I plan to continue to expand our meet in the years to come. The support I

received encourages me to continue to push our sport forward locally.

We have one more meet, and it is next Saturday at Atascadero High. The meet is going to start at 9:00,

and it has historically ended around 2:00. Also, as in years past, they will conclude the meet with an

open 2 mile on the track. If you are interested in concluding this season by running with your child,

this is a great opportunity.
