Windsor Woods, Princess Anne Plaza, and The Lakes are neighborhoods located in what was once the undeveloped headwaters of the Lynnhaven River. According to aerial photos from 1949, the area was originally forest surrounded by farmland. Much of the area has relatively low elevations. Low elevations coupled with increasing sea levels (approximately one-foot over the last 50 years) and the increasing frequency of storms with significant tides and rainfall amounts, has resulted in severe flooding of the neighborhood during extreme events.
Virginia Beach Public Works has conducted engineering analysis to develop solutions to mitigate the flooding of structures and streets. The highest priority projects to be designed and constructed to achieve the greatest reduction of structure flooding are:
Approximately 10 miles of new storm drains are proposed to be built in the project area. The majority of the new storm drains will be constructed after the major projects are completed. The map below illustrates the major infrastructure improvements.
• Elevations in the area are low (most homes are slab on grade; little fall to street)
• Area is tidally influenced• Increased frequency & severity of
