We live for summertime fun in Tahoe… and it’s here for us to enjoy once again.

Catch a headliner show at Harrah’s with their impressive variety to choose from. The bad boys of magic, Penn and Teller, return to Harrah’s June 26. I love these guys! Their offbeat style of amazing illusions, mind-boggling tricks, and classic bits, all mixed with humor, makes for a great show. For over 30 years Penn Jillette and Raymond Teller have been entertaining excited audiences all over America, and are regulars in Las Vegas. They have best selling books that include “Cruel Tricks for Dear Friends.” Their hit TV show (The Penn and Teller. Bullshit!) is in its seventh season. Yes, some of their humor is twisted – and that’s a good thing from these talented entertainers. When I met them to do a photo, Teller, who never speaks in their act or on TV, told me he ran into a cymbal backstage and he hopes the cut on his eye doesn’t look too bad. It was very strange to hear him speak after all these years that I’ve been watching them on TV. Go see these cool guys of magic and humor.

The legendary Smothers Brothers bring their 50 years in show biz June 19 and 20. Tom on guitar and vocals,

and Dick on stand-up bass and vocals, are American classics to enjoy. Their famous TV show in the late 60s was groundbreaking for TV viewers with their top name guests, controversial opinions, and fun sarcasm. They will mix politics, old-time songs, current events, brotherly rivalry, yo-yo tricks, lots of humor, and so much more. This show is fun for the whole family. They told me their popular comedy albums really helped their career in the early days.

Get ready to rock with George Thorogood & the Destroyers June 13. Known as the bad boy of slide guitar, Thorogood will get down on his knees and sweat up a storm while performing classics like “Bad to the Bone,” “Move It on Over,” “One Bourbon, One Scotch, One Beer” and “Who Do You Love.” His Rock is mixed with Boogie and Blues, which makes for a tasty mix. They will certainly create a party!

Legendary Bob Newhart, performing June 6, will bring his unique comedy style of story-telling and classic comedy routines. Newhart has been coming to Tahoe for years! His TV sitcoms are as American as apple pie. Years ago, we talked about how he really enjoys B.B. King’s music.

The Red Rocker, Sammy Hagar and the Wabos, rocked Harrah’s showroom for two nights. Always creating a party with his huge fan base, it was a Cinco de Mayo celebration to remember. We are lucky to have his Cabo Wabo Cantina at Harveys in our town where his son, Aaron, also performs. We get Sammy’s new all-star band Chickenfoot, with Joe Satriani, Michael Anthony from VanHalen and Chad Smith from Red Hot Chili Peppers, performing at Harveys Outdoor Arena September 5. Their CD comes out this month. My photo of Sammy with his sunglasses off for a few seconds is pretty rare to see.

Legendary Buddy Guy also came to the ‘Biggest Little Entertainment Town in the World’ (Lake Tahoe), courtesy of Harrah’s. This guitar and Blues man has influenced Jimi Hendrix, Eric Clapton, and Jeff Beck, just to name a few. He gave Tahoe one hell of a show. I like when he strolls around the excited crowd and plays in the aisles – everyone loves it! At 72, he’s got a lot of energy and dresses very cool. Guy tells old-time stories in his show, plays guitar riffs that many greats have copied, and smiles a lot. I talked to Buddy while playing Craps, and he likes to roll a little dice. From a sharecropper’s family and

raised on a plantation, to guitar great – what a story – what a man!

Harveys Concert Series opens with Wilco June 28. Valhalla Renaissance Faire is June 6 & 7. Nightclub fun at Opal (at MontBleu) on Thursday, Friday and Saturday has great drink specials. Vex Nightclub at Harrah’s is also very popular. Improv comedy at Harveys is always funny. Carnival Cabaret at Horizon is very entertaining and unique. Valhalla Boat House with their lake view to enjoy is very cool. The Neville Brothers are at Crystal Bay Casino June 26. Bar 24 has lots of live music, DJs and fun. DJ Chris English creates the party at Cabo Wabo on Sundays. Live music is performed at The Beacon to enjoy along with the lake view. Whiskey Dick’s has live music to check out. Take a cruise on the Woodwind II, sailing from Zephyr Cove Resort. Tudor Pub, Rockwater, McP’s, Divided Sky, Fresh Ketch, Lakeside Inn, Riva Grill, and Rojo’s all have live music.

And remember to keep your mom in your thoughts. Have fun – you’re in Tahoe!

Since When is The Y the WYE??

Last month I somewhat defended Broc’s Puppy’s as a victim in the way The City and a select few individuals were unfairly targeting him and his claims that he does not get his puppy’s from a puppy mill. He was just a businessman trying to make a living and was being targeted unfairly. Well I happen to be at his shop when a truck pulled up to deliver puppy’s as it does most Mondays around 11am. The name of the trucking company is Hunte Trucking and they are the largest delivery trucking company for the largest Puppy Mill in America which is located in Oklahoma and owned by one guy with 27 different company’s. The state is after him along with several other lawsuits pending for various reasons such as cruelty to animals, selling inferior animals and poor conditions both in breeding and transportation. Now I still feel he should be able to make a living but he needs to make sure everyone knows he gets his animals from the largest puppy mill in the country. I took pictures of the inside of the truck and figure there are about

400 dogs in there all of which came from Oklahoma, now the dogs are rated from A to C and by the time it reaches Lake Tahoe how many A dogs do you think are left for him to purchase. They tried to keep me from taking pictures and would not answer any questions so I am leaving an open mind filled with doubt about the condition of the dogs.

A month ago when Tahoe Ice Cream was going to open another ice cream company wanted them to carry their brand in the store to which they said no thanks and that they wanted to go Local all the way. This other company, Tahoe Creamery, has terrible tasting ice cream according to my taste testing, is overpriced and comes from Minden Nevada. When the salesman was turned down all the signs were painted in the shop, a fictitious business name was secured and everybody knew the name was going to be Tahoe Ice Cream. Well 30 days later they get a call from this guy in Minden telling them to change their name or he was going to get a cease and desist order forcing them to change their name, he just happens to be an attorney, due to the fact that he owns the rights to the name Tahoe Ice Cream but only in Nevada. Now rather than fight this guy they changed the name to Aloha Ice Cream to which I can only imagine

Hawaii is in the process of filing a suit also. Since when is the name Tahoe a patentable name? If this was the case we would only have one Tahoe anything in any business name and this is another prime example of Nevada telling us how to run our town. All it it took was a threat by an Attorney and Tahoe Ice Cream company fades away, Attorneys, can’t live with them, can’t shoot em. All I got to say is DO NOT BUY ANY ICE CREAM FROM TAHOE CREAMERY. They are in the stores up here and some eatery’s are carrying the brand but DO NOT BUY ANY and tell the store owner why. They are not a local company, they are Nevada bully’s telling us what to do and their ice cream tastes funny according to The Bum. Just like Broc’s Puppy’s, if we do not patronize their establishment or buy their product they can’t exist. Keep Tahoe Local.

Neener Neener. Well a second NOD has been filed against the “Hole” with others to follow, this one is to the tune of $2.5 Million. What the city should do is let him go under then sell your future bonds and buy the “Hole” at half price. When we own the property we can build our own convention center with local workers and local companies as well as an open space area. Hell, we could even throw in a city hall to boot with the money

we have wasted on this project. I still am concerned with the structural integrity of the steel that has sat all winter and will continue to sit. Here is a quick time line to it all. May 14, 2007 work starts. October 25, 2007 work ends due to non payment to workers and contractors. Jan 22, 2008 Two liens are filed for $3 Million for non payment. Jan 28, 2008 A loan is secured through the sale of 13 units for $10 Million and another loan of $12 Million (where did the money go?) Feb 6, 2008 Liens Released. April 22, 2009 First NOD is filed. May 12, 2009 Second NOD is filed. Starting to see a pattern here??

Sign Of The Month: This one has got to go out to KAL TRANZ and the sign that is telling us about all the roadwork going on: Roadwork from WYE to Stateline. Since when is The “Y” spelled WYE?

Only took 11 years but I finally got on the cover, looks like I will have to wait another 11 years to get on the radio, Howie, you gonna last that long?

(Editors Note - Now his ego is going to be out of control!!!)

As Usual: [email protected] Later. Skibum.

Hello survivors of the basin. Thank you for being here and reminding us what really counts. Can you believe we have traveled halfway through this year already? WTF? The longer I live here I am noticing that I am becoming more political in my thoughts and actions. I try to imagine what it must have been like for those who have been here for decades. The way some of the members here in political positions respond to the needs of the city it feels like beyond any good old boy’s network. No, it’s more like if you were the cheerleader and dated the football star during high school one day you would be allies in local government and decide who gets to open a business up here or not. Forget that this kind of behavior is illegal and

will ultimately cost the city a lot of money after settling a lawsuit but smacks of cronyism and the NIMBY (not in my backyard) syndrome. More to follow trust me. On a more positive alignment I have spoken with Harrah’s and they are helping out during these recessionary times when it comes to laughter. A while back I wrote an extensive article in The Trib on what comedy clubs are doing to help out in this recession and do what one can to get folks to come to see a comedy show and forget the outside world for a little while. Well good news here locally Harrah’s is allowing me to comp any active military (must be over 21) to The Improv for the month of June. Details are available by calling the Harveys box office. Thanks guys for that I really appreciate it and good timing what with our nation’s birthday just around the corner.

It’s always a treat getting a new act up here to the lake but to have two new acts on the same bill is even better. Such is the case with headliner actor/comedian Kirk Fox and Kira Soltanovich. Kirk won the jury prize for standup at the 2007 HBO Comedy Festival in Aspen and has his own “Comedy Central Presents” airing as you read this. He recently performed on

“The Tonight Show with Jay Leno.” He can count himself as one of the last comics to be on that show when Jay Leno was the host. Currently Kirk is starring with Owen Benjamin in the web series “Heckle U” which can be seen at www.cbs.com . You can also see him opposite Michael Keaton in the movie, “The Post Grad Survival Guide” and Comedy Central’s “Reno 911.” Appearing with Kirk is Kira who was born in the former Soviet Union and raised by immigrant parents in San Francisco. “Like most kids, my parents took me to Disneyland ...not for the rides, for the lines. They assumed there’d be food at the end of them.” Man, can’t wait to see her! Catch her with first timer Kirk the week of June 3rd through the 7th.

Rocky LaPorte is here this month with Graham Elwood. Man, it’s like having two headliners rolled into one and both are good friends not to mention outstanding comics.

Rocky hails from Chicago and does Graham originally but now resides in Los Angeles. Rocky has done his fair share of television shows and late night appearances and is slated for yet another Tonight Show this time when Conan O’Brien is host. The last time Jay Leno was host so Rocky is crossing over. Rock is in a new movie too with Tim Allen called “Crazy On the Outside.” The movie is Allen directorial debut and also stars Sigourney Weaver, Ray Liotta and Kelsey Grammer. Rocky has a pretty decent part in this movie as well. In fact when Tim Allen was on “The Tonight Show with Jay Leno” he showed stills from the upcoming movie with Rocky as the featured actor. Graham Elwood is just plain funny for funny’s sake. He has one of those infectious laughs so I try to get him to crack up every Thursday when I call him for our radio segment called, “Graham’s Crackers.” Graham has performed overseas and I was fortunate to be with him on one of those tours. He has a DVD entitled, “Comedy From the Front Lines: Live From Afghanistan.” Two great comics with Graham and Rocky the week of June 10th through the 14th.

It doesn’t get much better than having Bob Zany up here and Avi Liberman. Zany is the proprietor of “The Zany Report” heard coast to coast (and on my morning show exclusively every Tuesday up here) Bob is a one-

man marketing machine of everything that is humorous and he is the king of the one-liners. Besides his extensive radio stuff he has also discovered a bunch of other comics through his self produced showcases including the creation of Bob Zany’s Comedy Outlets with over 50 locations throughout California and Nevada, a comedy album, “Hi Home, I’m Honey” on Laff Records, a published diet scrapbook, “Laugh at Fat, Bay-bee!” (which chronicles his 175-lb weight loss) and numerous roles in feature films including a starring role opposite Linda Blair in “Up Your Alley” and the highlight of his career to date, being hired by his idol, Steve Martin, to appear on George Burns’ Comedy Week. His latest CD is entitled; “Zany from B to Z” so check it out. In fact check out his site at www.bobzany.com. Avi Liberman hasn’t been here for quite a while so it’ll be nice having him back. Avi has performed stand-up comedy on CBS’s “Late Late Show” with Craig Ferguson on Comedy Central’s “Premium Blend” and “Make Me Laugh” as well as NBC’s “Friday Night!” His acting credits include “Dave’s World” CBS, “Boston Common” NBC and “Andytown U.S.A.”on Comedy Central. Avi can also be seen regularly on E! as one of their frequent guests on their very popular countdown series. He has also guest starred on “Movies At Our House” as well as having shot a pilot titled “Through the Keyhole” both on AMC. A good pairing June 17th through the 21st.

Howie Nave is the host/emcee/

manager of The Improv @ Harveys every Tuesday through Sunday. Howie also hosts his own morning show (“Howie’s Morning Rush”) on 93.9 KRLT radio Monday through Friday from 6 to 10am and now you can see him Monday through Friday at midnight on his very own television show, “Howie’s Late Night Rush” on RSN. www.Howienave.com.

Après Wine Company is sure to provide you with an unforgettable wine experience while in the Reno/Tahoe area. This wine bar, shop and eatery becomes a fast favorite of those who visit. The key to the experience is the Après Wine Pass, your passport to taste more than 50 wines. The pass gives you access to tasting machines which dispense your choice of wines. Why machines? The secret to the wide variety at Après is their Enomatic System, a preservation and dispensing technology that keeps wine fresh for up to six weeks.

At Après, wines can be enjoyed by the taste, glass, carafe, or bottle, and are meticulously selected by UCLA-trained connoisseur JP Lonergan. Lonergan, a man with a passion for wine, sells and serves small production, artisan crafted varietals with a story behind every one. He says, “I select wines from all over the world, representing the best examples of wine-making from those regions.” The result is a wine experience like

no other, a personal education and an opportunity for new discoveries.

One popular way to discover wine is with food designed to complement the wines. Après Chef Zach Barnhill’s menu creations range from mouth-watering crab cakes served atop chayote slaw to decadent specialty desserts. A selection of beer and non-alcoholic beverages enhance the well-rounded menu.

Wine tasting is pleasurable, but one of the greatest pleasures is to take wines home with you. Every bottle Après has available for tasting can be purchased on-site. Wine-related gifts and Tahoe souvenirs are also available for purchase.

Kids, Kids, Kids! It’s that time of year when we all get together and help the kids on the newly named “Dale Sare Memorial Sawmill Pond Kids Fishing Derby” put on by the Optimist Club of South Lake Tahoe, Tahoe Fly Fishing Outfitters, “Mac The Naw” (Doug Busey), Raleys Grocery Store and a host of other volunteers. Saturday, June 13th from 8am until 1pm. All kids 14 and under are welcome to fish! Bring the family and help your kids learn the wonderful outdoor activity of fishing. There will be fishing rods to use as well as prizes, food and of course lots of help from all the great volunteers! There will be Big FISH this year so bring your cameras and make sure your fishing tackle is ready for the challenge... Of course

we have to pay for all these fish for the kids so please donate, if you can, to the Sawmill Pond Fish Stocking Fund. Drop off your donations at Tahoe Fly Fishing Outfitters and if you have questions about the Kids fishing day or other ways to donate to the fund, please contact Victor at the fly shop 530-541-8208. We are really looking forward to having a great day with the Kids!!!

As the month of June progresses, the run-off on our streams should start to wane and the fishing should start to get really good on waters like the East Carson River and the West Carson River. Some of the rivers are already starting to fish well at the end of May including the Truckee River flowing out of Tahoe and the upper sections of the American River. It looks like the East Carson should be float/fishable by the first week of this month and hopefully the flows will hold on through the 3rd week of the month. My favorite flows for fish/floating are from 1000 CFS down to 400 CFS. There is nothing like floating a river, camping and fishing and don’t forget the natural hot springs as well. If you are going to attempt to fish the East Carson during the higher flows, I

would suggest fishing with streamers and or large Stonefly Nymphs until the flows get down below 400 CFS. The West Carson River is getting better day by day and running clear and some anglers are catching fish but it should be good for all anglers by the beginning of the month! Fish with Stoneflies, Buggers and Mayfly imitations, the fish seam to be spread out this year so try some of the out of the way spots for better success!

The best fishing this Spring has been on the East Walker River in California! Look for Caddis, Midges and the occasional Mayfly hatch. Streamers are always a good bet especially at the end of the day! Another fishery that has made a nice comeback is Kirman (Carmen) Lake off of hwy 108 (Sonora Pass). This lake has Brook Trout as well as Lahontan Cutthroat Trout and both can be very large! Buggers, Leeches, Blood Midges and Water Boatmen all seam to work well! An easy walk in or you can use a mountain bike which doesn’t help much on the ride in but the ride out is a blast.

If you are heading for the Truckee River, fish the sections above the Boca Outlet area. The flows are looking

pretty good and the fish are starting to eat with some consistency and will only get better as the month progresses. Golden Stones, March Browns, Green Drakes, Caddis and Crawdad Patterns should all be good choices. The Little Truckee River has a few good fish in it, but the fish are well educated and if you are looking for the ultimate challenge give it a try! They will eat off the top at the right time and if you are in the right place it can be a blast!

These are just a few of the great fisheries that we have to offer in our area and if you would like more information on these or any other fisheries in our area, give us a call or stop by the shop. We will be able to set you up with whatever it takes to get you into fish and a few tips on where to go as well. We do have guides available for lessons or guided adventures on local streams or lakes, take a guide out today and increase your fishing pleasure!

Tahoe Fly Fishing Outfitters is located at 2705 Lake Tahoe blvd. next to Midas Mufflers about 1.5 miles from the Y intersection. 530-541-8208!

“Summertime and the living’s easy.” Best said in the song Doin’ Time by Bradley Nowell and Sublime and held true by Tahoe Locals, right? Life has been good. I celebrated my Birthday on May 20th by producing a concert with Andre Nickatina and Smoov-e and they performed to a SOLD-OUT crowd. Over 200 people that didn’t buy their tickets early were turned away at the door! What a night! Then on to Memorial Day weekend....town was packed, record temperatures were reached and I was seen on the Lake or at the Beach everyday! If this is what we have in store for the next few months, BRING IT ON! I’ve been working hard on this Summers music line-up and I already have shows booked pretty solid through Labor Day. First, lets talk about the coming month, then I will give you a sneak preview of the rest of the Summer!

Sunday, June 7th at Bar 24 inside Bill’s Casino - Zion-I and The Bayliens will perform with special guests, the Kev Choice Ensemble. If you don’t already know, KEV CHOICE began his career as a keyboardist supporting performers such as Michael Franti and Spearhead, Goapele, LyricsBorn, Too Short, Martin Luther, Jennifer Johns, and more recently DJ Quik. Zion I (pronounced “Zion Eye”) are a hip hop duo from Oakland, California. The duo consists of producer and DJ, AmpLive and emcee Zumbi. The two are highly respected and acclaimed underground

artists, famous for Amp’s futuristic production techniques, using a mix of live instrumentation and samples, and Zumbi’s poetic, positive and socially conscious lyrics. BPOS from Reno, NV will start the show.

Tuesday, June 9th at Bar 24 inside Bill’s Casino - A punk rock showcase not to be missed - No Us For A Name with Only Crime, Pour Habit and local’s Ninja Slaughterhouse.

No Use For A Name are one of independent music’s most dominant and everlasting forces. Hailing from San Jose, Ca, they have local roots from Truckee, Ca as well. For two decades NUFAN has been a mainstay of energetic Punk Rock with over 1 million records sold worldwide. Only Crime is a melodic hardcore supergroup formed by Good Riddance singer Russ Rankin and Bane guitarist Aaron Dalbec in 2003. They were joined by producer Bill Stevenson - legendary drummer of seminal punk bands Black Flag, Descendents, and All - to be the drummer in the new project. The band was given the name Only Crime and they released their debut album on Fat Wreck Chords in 2004, entitled To the Nines.

Friday, June 19th at The Underground in Reno - An alll-ages Hip-Hop showcase with Equipto, Smoov-e and special guests from Reno and beyond. Equipto is one of the busiest and most respected lyricists in The Bay Area and beyond right now. His tenacious work

ethic and uncanny freestyle skills continue to earn him respect in the studio and on stage. He is most often seen working with the likes of Bay Area legends Andre Nickatina and the late Mac Dre. Smoov-e was born in Tennessee and moved to California but not by choice.... He’s a self proclaimed “pretty face pimp” He’s smoov like water, and tends to be one of the more explicit rappers out there... All l can say is this is a show “You gotta see for yourself”!

Saturday, June 20th the Tahoe Derby Dames will be at it again with their second home bout of the season against the No Town Rollers from Fresno, CA. As we will be doing for the entire season, Late-Nite Productions will be hosting the official afterparty at Bar 24. This time with the “Scumbag Country” sounds of Hellbound Glory live in Concert. Come meet the girls in person and take a ride as we bring back “Buckin’ Black Betty” for more Mechanical Bull rides!

Blue Turtle Seduction will take a break from their busy touring schedule to play a local show on Saturday, June 27th to officially kick off the Summer season for us! This is happening at Bar 24 and will be their only local show of the Summer until they come back for Labor Day weekend. The band grabs elements from various roots music and injects a flavor of Tahoe adrenaline, creating a form of lifestyle music that is defined through bluegrass, mountain-reggae, world music,

organic hip-hop and funk. Local’s Duke of Bruce will support the show.

Wednesday, July 1st at Bar 24 inside Bill’s Casino - Reggae Legend from Kingston Jamaica, Eek-A-Mouse will take the stage for one night only. Truly a Tahoe favorite, Eek-A-Mouse is one of Jamaica’s premier reggae stars, and one of the early artists to be described as a “singjay” It is not only Eek-A-Mouse’s 6 feet 6 inches height that make him one of Jamaica’s most individual talents. He has created a style all his own, and gone on to become something of an international phenomenon quite apart from the rest of the world of reggae. Truckee Tribe will open.

Now for that sneak preview I was telling you about.....are you ready??! The following shows are confirmed for Bar 24 at Bill’s Casino: Blackalicious, DJ Mike Relm on July 5th.
