The KnightLight Concept
Updated Feb 08 v3.0
Developments in Automotive Forward - Lighting
Development and roll out of LED Forward - Lighting. The Lexus LS600 was 1st to market in 07 with Lo beam (Koito + Nichia); Audi R8 2nd to market, but with both Lo & Hi beam (A-L + Philips Lumiled)
Cadillac Escalade Platinum due July 08, with Lo beam converting to Hi beam (Hella + Osram Opto)
Adaptive Front-Lighting System (AFS) - return to Steering the Headlight beams. Automatic modifying of the beam pattern in response to vehicle speed, weather conditions and road situations providing improved driving safety at night
More creative lighting designs possible - Meets the desire for linear and other arrays to replace circular headlamps
Page 2
The KnightLight patent portfolio covers the combination of LEDs with dynamic AFS for any headlight design - past, present and future
Light Emitting Diodes (LEDs)Benefits over conventional automotive bulbs
LEDs are the future of automotive lighting
Appearance Freedom to develop eye catching designs providing increased impact and appeal to customers.
Lifetime cost No need for replacement - lasts the life of the vehicle
Safety Improved night vision for driver / oncoming traffic, choice of Colour Temperature, quicker response time
Reliability Does not fail - solid state lighting (no filament or gas)
Environment Energy efficient, reduced carbon footprint, no noxious chemicals, safe disposal / recycling

Haitz’s Law
Haitz’s Law is the LED corollary to Moore’s Law of semiconductors. Named after Roland Haitz (now retired of Agilent Technologies) the Law forecasts that:“Every 10 years the amount of light generated by an LED increases by a factor of 20, while the cost of per lumen (unit of usable light emitted) falls by a factor of 10”.
Haitz’s Law suggests all lighting, including Automotive Forward-Lighting, should become LEDs within a decade. LED technology is here to stay

KnightLight Patents combine LEDs & AFSGB 2 362 207 priority date 26th Sept 98. Granted 24th July 02. ‘Automated Lighting’.Claim 1. ‘Automated lighting having a source of light formed by a plurality of white light emitting diodes pivotably mounted on a support member so that they are adjustable to change the angleand / or shape of the light beam produced by the diodes’.The UK Pat Office defined ‘Automated’ from the dictionary as: ‘with little or no human intervention’. Angle is beam direction, as in levelling and steering, shape is zoom or beam width.
US 7 004 603 priority date 7th April 00. Granted 28th Feb 06. ‘Angle Adjustment Device’.Claim 1. ‘Automated lighting having a source of light formed by a plurality of light emitting diodes(LEDs) that are pivotably mounted on a support member with a universal joint so that said LEDs areadjustable to change at least one of an angle and a shape of a light beam produced by said LEDs’.Claim 19. ‘Automated lighting having a source of light formed by a plurality of light emitting diodes(LEDs) that are pivotably mounted on a support’.
Application for Continuation in Part (C-in-P) US 11/240,096, filed 30th Sept 05, published as 2006/0023461 2nd Feb 06. Expands upon the KnightLight technique specific to automotive LED AFS. The US Examiner, in a preliminary review April 07, viewed this as two inventions and requested a split.
Application for Divisional of C-in-P filed 31st Oct 07. This filing reopens the patent string and allows for further Continuations and International filings. Under Patent rules there is a time frame to be adhered to and cooperation between KL and the Master Licensee would maximise the additional coverage from future filings to the benefit both parties.

KnightLight Concept - Features & Benefits
Page 6
A unique Beam Angle Adjustment technique providing combined automated levelling, steering and lensless zoom for improved safety and vision. Controls all movements of the LED beams and is independent of the construction of the light source photometric requirements.
The individual LEDs or arrays making up the whole pivot relative to the Front Plate. This allows for the Front Plate to be as far forward in the vehicle as possible and has two consequences. Firstly, the light is not masked when automatically levelled or steered. Secondly, with vehicle designs with curved front ends, the outer beam on a corner can pivot further, before being masked by the nose of the vehicle.
Flexible and adaptable allowing phased introduction of automated self levelling and dynamic beam steering
Capability to fit onto any vehicle - past, present and future
Where static bending light is not an option this is the only practical solution for dynamic levelling and steering of arrays
When legislation allows zoom capability can be included
The KnightLight technique provides the best way to exploit the benefits of LEDs and AFS for any LED array

A single LED AFS array steered 400 has problems with hitting the cover and masking
Recessing the single LED AFS array deeper into the cavity to avoid the cover problem increases the masking problem

KnightLight - The Right Light in the Right Place at the Right Time
KL is a patented technique that can be applied to any headlight design
KL can grant a Master Licence for its patented technology helping you secure the future in automotive lighting. There is significant potential for sub licensing.
KL patents provide the Master Licensee with an opportunity to secure competitive advantage through maximising “divisional” patent opportunities of future filings (but there is a time limit to achieve this)
KL can provide know how to help develop and implement its concept
KL can provide an alternative perspective to automotive lighting through its knowledge of creative lighting in the Entertainment industry
