FROM THE BAPTIST CHURCH
They say that a picture is worth a thousand words. Recently we have seen that image of the United States President standing outside St John's Church holding a Bible. It happened a few days after the death of George Floyd. Why had the President done this? Is it possible to be blasphemous in a photo opportunity? What sort of things are in the book he was holding that might put a big question mark against both the photo and the person posing?
My mind turned to the 4th commandment which warns against ‘taking the Lord’s name in vain’. I also thought about some passages where a Prophet claims to speak for the Lord. It turns out, however, that they were mistaken at best, lying at worst. (If you are interested see Jeremiah ch. 27; also 1 Kings ch. 22.)
Further thought led me to consider the usual way Christians view ‘taking the Lord’s name in vain’. That is when someone uses the name of God or Christ as a swear word. Christians do not like this. Yet the person involved may well be kinder, more helpful, more generous, than many of us who judge them.
Christians may well ‘stick to the rules’ but in practical terms we are not always positive people. Jesus warned against ‘Blind guides! You strain off a midge, yet gulp down a camel!’ That follows on from this accusation, ‘you have overlooked the weightier demands of the law -justice, mercy, and good faith.’
In other words that image of a man holding up a Bible in front of a church could be a mirror that Christians need to pay attention to. Another picture turned up on social media a few days later. I must warn you that it is ‘fake news’. It is the same man holding up the Bible but this time the notice board behind him reads ‘Again when you pray, do not be like the hypocrites; they love to say their prayers standing up in synagogues and at street corners for everyone to see them’.
One of the great things to come out of this pandemic is the practicality, reality, and celebration of our common humanity. Across barriers of race, class, gender, religion, and age. For me that is exemplified by another very powerful image from just down the road -Colston’s statue coming down before being ‘tipped overboard’.
‘Justice, mercy, and good faith’. I have been so impressed by all the ‘good news stories’ that have been both experienced by us, and reported to us, of acts of mercy demonstrating both good faith and justice. It was Martin Luther King who said that Justice was ‘love in action’. Can Christians be too careful not to use the wrong words whilst being careless of those weightier demands? Our love for God needs to be practiced not just preached about. One final image the black man carrying the white man out of danger, love in action.
God Bless, Robert Draycott (Rev)

NEWS FROM ST SWITHUN’S
Hello everyone, getting the church ready for people to use once again has taken some hours of cleaning and reorganising, it wasn’t just a question of unlocking the doors and doing a bit of dusting!
Regulations had to be followed about surface cleaning, chair spacing, removal of small items, a one way system and - most difficult of all, finding sanitisers for visitors to use. But Julia headed up a team of two and has got everything cleaned and sorted.
The church will be open for private prayer for a limited time through each week, this is because after each open session cleaning must be done so that all is fresh and safe for people at the next open time. A person in a supervising role is also required to be present and volunteers for a rota had to be found.
Here are the times when St. Swithun’s will be open for private prayer in the weeks ahead.
Monday 10 am – 12 noon
Wednesday 1.30 – 3.30 pm
Saturday 2 – 4 pm
We decided a variety of times would be more helpful to give flexibility through the week.
See page 3 for Information about when the church will be open for Sunday worship .
We hope to see many of you dropping into church now and reclaiming the building as an active part of our village life.
All good wishes from Pat and Julia
Churchwardens

NEWS FROM ST GEORGE’S
Summer Greetings
Since June 15 churches have been allowed to open their doors for individual prayer.
This is welcome news and our door will be open on:
Tuesdays Thursdays and Saturdays 10 am – 12 noon
There will be designated, distanced seating, and sanitiser in place. Please bring your own prayer book if you need one, as all books have to be packed away for now, including the visitors’ book.
Despite this, and the roping off of other areas, there will be a quiet place for you to reflect in peace.
Here are some words from a recent letter by Bishop Rachel:
‘As I listen to the cathedral clock chiming the hour, as it always does, I am grateful for that constancy amid so much disorienting change.’
‘We need to be making space now to reflect on change and the processes we need to put in place to enable us to live it well, yet this is also the time when many people are weary.’
‘This is no easy path particularly as our own thoughts and emotions will be changing amid the ups and downs of each present moment. Care and prayer for one another is important, as is significant time for rest.’
There is quite a long path to St George’s but at the end of it is a house in which to pause and be refreshed.
Stay safe and well
Vanessa and Carolyn
Stop Press:
It has been announced that from Sunday 5 July a public worship service will be held in a church in each Stroudwater Team Cluster.

HOW BELL RINGERS KEEP RINGING
With the closure of churches and the concept of social distancing, ringers like many other walks of life have had to become innovative.
Most people are now aware of “Zoom @”(other platforms are available) even if they do not know how to use it, though as even I have managed to “host” a Zoom Meeting I am sure most people could manage to click on a link and then “join meeting”. The entertaining bit is for the other attendees watching the new person talking away to themselves as they haven’t found the un-mute button, or alternatively using more colourful language as they struggle to find the join with video, not realising they are audible to all.
St Swithun’s ringers have been meeting using zoom, but unlike many choirs who only use their voices, or even orchestral players who have their own portable instruments, ringers bells are safely locked up in the tower.
There are some very clever people who are also ringers and a couple of these have devised an “app” which uses a centralised visual display of simulated bell ropes (anything from 4 to 12 ropes) and bell sound generation which individuals can log into from anywhere in the world, and “virtually ring” a single “bell” each. (Some clever people manage 2 bells,) just by pressing a number key or space bar on their own P.C. or I phone.
We use this system called Ringing Room,.so we can all sit in our homes, but still ringing together in one “virtual tower”.
We do this in conjunction with Zoom on a split screen so we can talk and see one another at the same time.
We are slowly mastering the techniques involved, and starting to overcome the biggest problem of all, the various different internet speeds which means we have to ring ahead of the beat (rhythm).
It is a substitute and does keep our brains active in remembering our methods, but we will be really delighted when we can get back to the real thing.

FROM THE NEWSPAPER ARCHIVES
Sourced by Bill Henley
Precautions At Our Ports. Some newspapers are alarming their readers with questions to whether influenza in 1918 is not something much worse, something brought on ships from America or the East. These nervous writers would be much reassured they see the elaborate precautions taken at the Port London to discover cases of sickness to 'ring ships, to isolate them, to disinfect ship and cargo and personal possessions, and to keep eye all contacts or persons who have had a chance of sharing the infection and spreading it. If the Medical Officer for the Port hears that rats have died in the hold a ship, he is immediately on the alert, and thousands of pounds will be spent without hesitation in disinfecting that ship and its crew, lest the rats should have died of plague, though no human being on board has been ill. The passengers never hear of any precautions being taken, but the port officer will communicate with the health authorities at their homes, and any case of mysterious sickness is thus properly diagnosed and treated without delay. We shall be glad to have the promised Ministry of Health with the hope that it will rid us of flu and measles, as we have been freed already from typhus and plague and the other pestilences that came to us in ships in the Middle Ages. Gloucester Chronicle 16 November 1918 Mill Accident: Benjamin Gainer, residing at Leonard Stanley, while at work at a cloth dressing machine at King Stanley Mills, had his clothes entangled, and he was drawn up round the cylinder and sustained very severe injuries. The unfortunate fellow was at once taken to Stroud hospital, where it was found that his arm had been broken, a piece of his ear cut off, and he was otherwise badly shaken. His injuries were attended to by Mr. Storry, the house surgeon. Gloucester Citizen October 11 1879

Cart Accident: On Saturday last, Edwin Powell, of Leonard Stanley, coal haulier, was about bis usual work delivering coal from the Great Western Station to King’s Stanley Mills. He went into the Royal Arms, Stonehouse, about midday, for a few minutes leaving the horse in charge of his son, a boy about fourteen years of age. The mullin being taken off for the horse to feed, he bolted. Powell ran after the horse, trying to stop him, but was knocked down by the shaft striking him in the chest, and the wheel of the cart went over him. The horse galloped off with the load of coal and was caught about 150 yards from the police station, by P.C. Boulton. Sergeant Hinder and Joseph Harrison went to Powell's assistance, who was bleeding very much from the mouth. Dr. Rehelby was sent for and attended to him and be was conveyed home, where he has since lain in a somewhat precarious state, and is not yet out of danger. Stroud Journal October 19 1878

Tic+ Chat (pronounced tic chat) is for young people aged between nine and 21 years old who need someone to talk to and it goes live today at 5pm. It is funded by the county council and is commissioned jointly with Gloucestershire Clinical Commissioning Group for the next 12 months.
This is a challenging time for everyone. We’ve all experienced sudden changes in our routines and are living with uncertainty. For some young people, the pandemic may also worsen or trigger anxieties they were already struggling with.
We want to let them know they are not alone and make sure they can access the support they need. They can speak to the friendly Tic+ Chat team about anything which is troubling them. No problem is too big or too small – the team won’t judge.
No appointment is necessary and the service can be accessed by calling 0300 303 8080, or via online text chat at the Tic+ website: https://ticplus.org.uk/ between the hours of 5pm-9pm Sunday to Thursday.
The launch of Tic+ Chat is part of a package of mental health support the county council is delivering to help people during the pandemic and beyond. In May, it launched Kooth an online mental wellbeing platform designed for young people experiencing issues with their emotional wellbeing, such as anxiety, low mood or stress.
Cllr Tim Harman, cabinet member for public health and communities, said: “It’s really important that young people are able to receive mental health support, especially during Covid-19 when they aren’t able to see friends, or go about their normal routine.
“Talking to someone else about worries before they get bigger can make a huge difference, so I’m pleased that we are able to offer this one-to-one help for them online and by phone.”
Dr Lawrence Fielder, GP and Clinical Lead for Mental Health at NHS Gloucestershire Clinical Commissioning Group, said: “Making things better for children and young people with mental health problems is one of our top priorities, and with the coronavirus pandemic changing so much for us all, it has never been more important for young people to be able to find the support they need to help them cope when things are tough. We are delighted to be partnering with our county council colleagues and tic+ to provide this service.”

MADELEINE LITTLE
Most of you will know by now that Madeleine slipped quietly away in her sleep in the early evening of Monday 25th.May. Madeleine’s life had become increasingly difficult over the past months, and she told me on several occasions that she felt the time had come for her to leave this life and go to join Roy and other members of her family and friends. Happily she had a strong faith and she knew, without a shadow of doubt that she would see them all again. We all have happy memories of her – days out; holidays and meeting her at the various clubs to which she belonged. Occasionally we heard a little of her strong feelings about certain things, but these were always well thought out before she spoke out about them. However, it is quite clear that despite that Madeleine was well loved in the community. This was proved by the generous donations given in her memory towards the work of Teckles – the cat sanctuary at Whitminster. Her family have asked me to thank you all for the cards they received; the prayers which they know were said and the donations. They are so pleased to learn that their Mum/Grandma/Great Grandma was so well thought of by so many people.

GARDENING IN JULY After all the recent rain, July ought to get off to a good start, with soil damp to the roots and foliage well-charged with sap. Young plants set out now, brassicas, sowings of peas and lettuces will benefit from the warm damp
conditions. The hope now is for dry spells – not too lengthy, to keep wet-weather diseases at bay – blight, for example. In some years of warm, humid weather, it can be a real problem, and copper sulphur treatment for potatoes becomes necessary. Last year, being so dry and hot, we had no problems that I was aware of. If there are gaps in the planting, perhaps where there were bulbs, one can pop in a few little plants purchased from a garden-centre, or ones you could grow from seed, like nasturtiums, to fill in and keep the colour going in the border, gaps only invite in weeds! Whenever there is rain after a dry spell, out come the slugs and snails! There have been slug pellets available for a while which do not harm birds or hedgehogs, safer than the blue ones. The blue slug-pellets are becoming very out of favour, and are being phased out and unavailable. If you are sure the birds have finished nesting, it’s quite a good time to trim hedges. A good tidy-up is useful, and prevents low-growing subjects from being overshadowed by heavy growth, and becoming thin and leggy. Keep dead-heading the roses, and don’t let them become heavily infested by greenfly, a few aren’t a problem and make meals for small birds. Lawn-mowings can be distributed along rows of potatoes, where they rot down and make a useful mulch – but don’t use them if you have been putting weedkiller on the lawn. If you didn’t get around to cutting back early-flowering border plants, like hardy geraniums and lupins, don’t leave it any longer – a good tidy-up looks neater, and encourages new growth. Gather it all up for composting along with weeds, before they flower and set seed. Many of us managed an early start this year with our seed-sowing, and peas are being picked by some of us, with French beans not far behind. There isn’t anything quite like fresh carrots, peas and lettuce straight from the garden, not to mention the first raspberries and gooseberries, which makes all the hard work worth-while. Let’s hope for good spells of warm, dry weather, so that we can enjoy our gardens while the long evenings are with us. Good gardening! Lucy Chubb.

About the July 2020 magazine
This month the magazine is only available on line and via email. We much appreciate the Parish Councils and Selsley Community Group helping to make it freely available on line. We would be interested in any feedback about the online edition — if in future any of our readers would like to receive it this way it would save on the printing and paper.
About the Magazine generally
Articles should be sent to the editors by email: [email protected] or phone Clare on 826565, our deadline is the 15th. Some months this can be extended, so please contact us and we may be able to include your article or notice if space is available.
Please note that articles do not represent the opinions of the editors only that of the writer. Anonymous items will not be included. Art work and local photographs can also be sent. All are included at the discretion of the editors.
The magazine is published eleven times throughout the year on a monthly basis, with December and January being a combined issue. It is available by subscription and delivered to your home (£4 for 11 issues) by contacting Pat Savage (822996) in Leonard Stanley, Liz Gardener (764798) in Selsley and Middleyard and Clare Cheney in Kings Stanley (826565) or you can contact us by email. The magazine costs 40p where sold individually, copies are available from Yew Tree stores and the churches.
Usually, ie when we can print the magazine, help with deliveries and with collating the magazine is always welcome. Collation i.e. sorting, stapling and folding is on either the 3rd or 4th Tuesday of the month (same day the magazine is available, see below) at 10.30 at St George’s and St Swithun’s churches. Please contact the editors if you would like to join us or just turn up.
We try to ensure that items in the What’s On and Parish Information sections are correct before going to print but details can change. Advertising for village organisation’s and charity fundraising events is free of charge. For enquiries about all other advertisements please contact the editors for details. Advertisements are charged for the full year, the costs being £25 for an eighth of a page, £50 for a quarter page . Advertising is sold in good faith and the editors can take no responsibility for the quality of goods or services offered.
Many thanks also to all those who contribute to the magazine and to those who use it to advertise their businesses.
This month’s cover picture is taken from the footpath up from Gypsy Lane, Leonard Stanley.
