Located in its own self-contained annex, our College has been recently refurbished and has all the facilities you will need, including a common room, a staffed Learning Resource Centre and an ICT suite.

And we are growing. We now have 330 students, following a variety of courses both academic and vocational and we’re adding to these all the time to make sure there’s something available for everyone.

King John College is an excellent working environment. It’s very friendly, it’s got a lot of energy. The students come to lessons and clearly enjoy them. There are great relationships between the students and the staff. You can see that in all the effort that is put into their work and also the other things that go on around the school. They put on their own shows and do charity events – things like that.

Every student at the college is given a tutor who will be with them for the two years they’re with us. They will help support them in their studies and help them get the best out of their time at the college.

ways to learnWhatever you want to achieve, King John College is ready to help you take the first step in achieving your goal.

AS & A LEVELSThe traditional form of Further Education, A Levels are more academic courses that focus on specific subjects and give a great foundation for further study in subjects as diverse as Medicine and Engineering.

Split across two years, the first year focuses on ‘AS’ qualifications, whilst the second year continues your study with complementary A2 components.

The A2 element can only be taken if you complete the relevant AS Level qualification in Year 12, with the workload reflecting the increase in skill and knowledge required to succeed.

BTEC & OCR CERTIFICATESThese are vocational qualifications normally studied over two years and – with all assessment based entirely on assignments undertaken during the course – there are no exams at the end.They are also often tailored towards a specialised industry or sector, designed specifically to give you the skills and knowledge employers want from their staff.

Best of all, these courses are available in a number of different subjects, making them the perfect alternative for anyone who wants to stay in education but doesn’t want to take A Levels.

THE FOUNDATION PROGRAMMEThis is a one year programme especially for students who do not achieve the minimum entry requirements to study A Levels and their equivalents but wish to continue with their studies. It is open to well motivated students who may wish to extend their range of Level 2 subjects. It is an ideal stepping stone between Level 2 and Level 3, so is great for students who prefer a more gradual step towards Level 3 study. At the end of the Foundation Year, if you are successful, you can apply to study Level 3 courses in Year 12 and hopefully progress into Year 13. This means you will have spent three years in the Sixth Form instead of the more usual two.

There’s a great range of subjects on offer. There are the more academic subjects through to a whole host of other areas, so every student at the College has the opportunity to do their best.

There’s a fantastic range of support available to all students. All our teachers are prepared to go that extra mile.

By the end of their studies, they will have been given every opportunity to succeed.

King John College is an excellent place to continue your studies, whether you’re coming up through King John School, or coming from a different school. There’s a fantastic range of courses and subjects, to make sure you really can achieve your best.

APPLIED A LEVELSThese are great qualifications for anyone who wants to train to AS & A Level standard but also wants to get some ‘hands-on’ experience.

Approximately two-thirds of the qualification will be assessed by assignments, with extended projects often taking place throughout the duration of the course. The remaining portion of marks available will be assessed via exams.

Every year, we add new enrichment activities to our timetables, as well as more and more exciting extracurricular activities and visits to interesting destinations around the world, adding another dimension to your time with us. Enrichment

The Enrichment programme offers you the opportunity to broaden your experiences at King John by taking up a new sport, helping to run the College Radio or perhaps joining the Public Speaking team.

Whatever you’re interesting in, there are a wide range of activities and events for you to choose from each term. Enrichment takes place every Wednesday afternoon.

Additional Studies

Every student at King John also follows an ‘additional study’. You can choose Financial Studies, the Extended Project Qualification (EPQ), or a modern foreign language.

The GCSE Language gives you 2 hours per week to complete the GCSE course in French, Spanish, Italian or Latin.

Toby: A typical week at King John College is normally quite flexible. You could have a lot of lessons one day, but the next you will have a lot more free time. This gives you time to revise or to go to the library – it works really well. You can space out your work routine. Chloe: A typical day is not as formal as school. You have about three or four lessons a day, and that’s broken up with study periods and free periods. These give you time to do extra study and research around the subject. Jenny: We have 18 hours of lessons, as well as study periods. In those study periods you can go to the Learning Resource Centre to use the books or computers there, or you can go on and talk to your teachers if you need to.

We also undertake Enrichment and Community Service. For my Community Service, I work with Year 9 students in a Maths class – I’ve taken Maths as an A-level. Toby: College is very different to school. It’s more relaxed, it’s more fun and you’re learning to work for yourself. You’re doing all this work because you want to get to university. And the teachers are there to help you along with it.

Music, drama and dance - performing arts take on a new dimension at King John College.

What will I study? You will investigate the effects of contexts such as power, gender and technology on language. You will also create your own texts for a specific audience and purpose. In the second year, you will study child language acquisition and language change, as well as investigating an aspect of language of your choice.

English Language

Film Studies

What will I study? Through this course you will deepen and broaden your knowledge, understanding, appreciation and enjoyment of film. You will look at both film production and the audience’s experience by focusing on a range of different films and you will also be given the opportunity to undertake some practical production work.


What careers could it help with? Actor, Cameraperson, Cinematographer, Designer, Director, Editor, Producer, Writer…

What will I study? You will explore a variety of texts from the Victorian era for coursework and examination, analysing the ways in which the writers present the time and how they communicate their ideas. Hairdressing

What will I study? This nationally recognised and fully flexible course allows you to learn the skills you need, directly from a hairdressing environment. You will spend four days a week in a salon and one in the college, developing your skills and honing your talents for the future.

History

What will I study? Starting in the sixteenth century and ending in the 1930s, our course will give you a broad understanding of significant events in British History which have come to shape the modern world.

What will I study? This course will help you develop and apply your knowledge of information technology, with a view to managing and disseminating information at a business level.

What will I study? A multi-disciplined subject, the focal point of PE will be the performer and their performance. Bringing theory and practice together, you will develop an understanding of the human body, as well as the psychological and social aspects of sport, to help improve your performance.

Philosophy & Ethics

What will I study? This covers a range of views from philosophers and ethical thinkers which are applied to the world we live in today. Giving you a greater understanding of why we are here and our purpose in life. You learn to be a critical thinker.

There’s a lot of one-to-one time with teachers. This shows in your learning. There’s more time to interact and the teaching is a better quality - and that’s shown in the grades everyone gets.

What will I study? Covering a wide range of topics, from the classical theories of Newton to the quantum world of Einstein – you will be able to find out more about everything from the structure of atoms to the mysteries of the Universe.

Psychology

What will I study? A subject that studies the human mind and how it influences behaviour, Psychology covers a range of perspectives, including how our minds develop, how disorders can be treated and the functions behind sleep, stress and emotions.

Science with Forensics

What will I study? Initially a one year AS equivalent course with the option of continuing onto a second year A2 equivalent course, where you will have the chance to experience what it is like to study and work as a Forensic Scientist. The course covers the fundamentals of science, scientific practical techniques and science in the work place in the first year and then moves onto criminology, forensic science and finally, criminal psychology in the second year should students remain on the course.

What will I study? With an aim to explain the different forces and influences that shape our daily lives, Sociology looks at key social structures – such as families, education and work – to help you understand how everyday society works.

What will I study? This subject aims to equip you with the skills you will need to succeed in a Spanish-speaking business or education environment, as well as giving you the opportunity to undertake one week’s work experience in Spain.

Sport

Extracurricular PE – another success story

In 2012-2013 the Sixth Form will be running competitive netball, hockey, football and rugby teams. Training will be on through the week with games on Wednesday afternoons.

All of the teams enter either County or National Cups, with the rugby team competing in the National Daily Mail

Schools Cup and the Rosslyn Park Rugby 7’s (the biggest schools rugby tournament in the world).

On top of this, all students have the opportunity to use our excellent fitness suite that is open most lunch times for students to use!!

My Maths tutor is probably the best teacher I’ve ever had. I feel like he gives us a lot of respect. I want to do the work for him – it feels good because he’s helping me learn. Toby Softly, Year 13

Entry to some courses requires a certain level of achievement at GCSE…

All students are expected to achieve a Grade C or higher in English and Maths. Entry to courses is calculated on a points system, where your best 8 GCSEs (including Maths, English, Science) are converted into points accordingly: A*=58, A=52, B=46, C=40, D=34, E=28, F=22, G=16Your final points score will determine the course available to you in order to provide a personal pathway to learning.

You will then be invited in for a guidance meeting with a member of our team. We’ll discuss your choices and what you aim to do after studying with us. Your guidance meeting is an important part of the application process and will help decide whether you are offered a place.

Now you should have plenty of time to revise for your GCSEs, helping you to achieve your full potential. Once your exams are out of the way, we will invite you to enrol with us and give you a start date for your courses.

aiming higherWe have a consistently high percentage of students from our college annually entering into higher education.

This year more than 85% of our students applied to universities and colleges through UCAS – the University and College Admissions Service. Our feedback from UCAS indicates the vast majority of our applicants receive offers from institutions which are their first or second preference.

Time is designated for students to meet with their form tutors and the resident careers advisors for help and advice with their UCAS and job applications.

In addition to this we provide all of our students with a range of resources to successfully complete their applications before the necessary deadlines. These include access to ICT facilities, university and college prospectuses, information about university and college open days, job vacancies and visits from an outside consultant to help with their personal statements.

At King John we aim to give our students the edge, since we have realised the workplace is becoming increasingly competitive. More and more employers are seeking individuals with overall lifeskills in addition to normal academic qualifications

Teaching StaffThe staff at King John College are led by the Senior Learning Coordinator, KS5 and two Learning Coordinators. In addition, there is an experienced team of 14 personal tutors.

Your Personal TutorAt King John, all students follow a Sixth Form Studies course which offers time dedicated to tutor support and our Enrichment programme. Your personal tutor who, wherever possible, will be a member of staff who also teaches you, will monitor your progress through one-to-one interviews each term, help you set action plans and generally support your academic and social development. Your tutor will also support you with UCAS and employment applications.

Additional StudiesPart of your Year 12 experience offers supplementary courses in General Studies and Financial Studies.

Physical EducationWith outstanding facilities on-site, King John College offers plenty of opportunities for you to take part in a range of individual and team sports. In addition, the College offers courses in refereeing, coaching and other related activities. And, in Year 12, you will get the chance to tailor your own PE programme with the help of the physical education department.

Work-related OpportunitiesThe college offers a variety of work experience and job-shadowing opportunities to every student and they play a vital part of many of the courses on offer. Great working relationships with a variety of businesses across the area means we are able to fulfil placements quickly and every year some students have the opportunity to work abroad.

Independent StudyLife at King John College is built on a foundation of independent study. This gives you the tools you need to bring out your potential and hone your skills for later life. On your first day we will guide you towards making the most out of your independent study sessions and provide you with a student planner to help you work towards deadlines. We believe that by working together, you, your parents and your tutors can prepare you for the next step in your life.

GuidanceYour success at King John College depends on the close cooperation of you, your parents and your tutors. You will be assigned a personal tutor who will be responsible for monitoring your progress, as well as offering constructive and sympathetic guidance on any issues impacting upon your life at the College – from study methods and independent learning to careers and higher education decisions.

If you experience any difficulty at your time at the College, it will be your personal tutor, the Head of Sixth Form or the Assistant Head of Sixth Form who will make contact with your parents. Likewise, we encourage all parents to contact us should they feel it necessary to express any particular concerns.

MonitoringYour tutors will complete a regular assessment of your achievements throughout your life at the College. Aspects highlighted include effort, academic progress and attitude to learning. Your personal tutor will then compile the subject assessments and discuss them with you, before forwarding a final copy to your parents.

Parent Liaison In addition to the ongoing monitoring of your achievements, full annual reports will be prepared. There will also be a consultation evening for parents, students and tutors, in addition to two review sessions.

Student Parliament Elected by members of Year 12 and 13, the Council play a major role in planning social events. The Sixth Form Parliament represents the student body on all aspects of life at the College and its members are drawn from every tutor group.

Learning ContractWhen you begin your life at the King John College you will enter into a learning contract with us. This will set out, clearly, the opportunities for learning provided for you – and what we expect in return, with regard to your commitment and attitude.

Code of ExpectationsWe are proud of the College’s warm, friendly and supportive atmosphere – where all students are encouraged to achieve maximum success in their chosen fields of study. Every student is expected to contribute fully to this aim and show respect and courtesy to every member of the College and School community – other students, younger pupils, staff and visitors.

Every student at King John College must sign the Code of Expectations, which includes the following:

1. All students should complete at least 15 hours of study per week outside lessons to ensure that all assignment deadlines are met and that work is of the highest possible standard.

2. All students must attend all timetabled lessons and study periods. A letter from parents should explain all absence.

3. All students should dress in a manner which is acceptable in a school environment and which recognises safety requirements.

4. Students are not allowed to smoke in school, in the area surrounding the school or on the school buses.

5. Possession or consumption of alcohol or drugs will not be tolerated, on or off the school site, whilst under the jurisdiction of the school.

ApprenticeshipsIf academic subjects aren’t for you, then an apprenticeship could be the perfect alternative. We offer several apprenticeship courses that teach you everything you need to know for your vocation. By the end of the apprenticeship, you’ll have all the skills for the job, as well as invaluable hands-on experience in the workplace.

Accounting

What is the role of an Accounting apprentice carry out? Tasks include balancing accounts, processing invoices and payments, preparing financial returns, monitoring petty cash and bills, and writing financial reports.

What qualities does an Accounting apprentice need? You should be good with numbers and have natural business and commercial understanding. Strong communication skills and excellent attention to detail are essential.

What courses do we offer? NVQ Level 2 & Level 3

Entry requirements A minimum of grade C Maths and English, plus two grade D’s at GCSE.

Employment The apprenticeship requires a minimum of 16 hours per week in paid employment; the school will help you find this. Employers must pay apprentices a minimum of £96.20 per week (pro rata for part-time work).

Career prospects Once you have your NVQ Level 2 qualification, you can progress to the Level 3 course and then onto a related Foundation degree. Starting salaries, once qualified, range from £12,000 to £14,000. More senior posts attract salaries of up to £40,000.

Cost 16-18 year olds: Training is free for the student and employer.

19 years plus: Training is free for the student, with a contribution to be made by the employer.

All organisations need people to manage their finances. An Accounting apprenticeship prepares you for roles such as account assistant, credit control clerk and finance assistant.

Business & Administration

What is the role of a Business & Administration apprentice? Tasks include planning meetings, setting up agendas, typing minutes, work on Excel, PowerPoint and Word, sorting post, faxing, photocopying and filing.

What qualities does a Business & Administration apprentice need? You will need good organisational skills, strong IT skills, excellent verbal and written communication, and a committed and methodical approach to work.

Hair/Beauty


Entry requirements A minimum of two grade D GCSEs. Entry is subject to an in-house test and interview.

What skills do you learn as a Hairdressing apprentice? Apprentices on the hairdressing course will learn all the necessary skills for a career as a hairdresser, including washing, cutting, styling and colouring hair, dealing with clients, and health and safety training. Optional units teach salon reception duties, promoting additional services and products to clients, plaiting and perming hair and attaching hair extensions.

What skills do you learn as a Beauty apprentice? Beauty apprentices will learn all the basic skills required for a career as a beautician, such as manicuring, pedicuring, waxing, giving facial skin treatments, enhancing eyebrows and lashes, and dealing with clients. Optional units train you in salon reception duties, ear piercing, make-up services, threading services and assisting with spa treatments.

Employment You will spend 4 days in the workplace and 1 day in college. The minimum apprentice wage is £2.60 per hour, which equates to approximately £96.20 per week and is paid by the employer.

Cost 16 to 18 year olds: Training is free to the student and the employer.

19 to 24 year olds: Training is free to the student, with a contribution to be made by the employer.

25 years plus: The full training cost is required.

The King John School has a successful Hair and Beauty department, with a reputation for excellence. We offer a high quality training and assessment programme for both Hair and Beauty apprentices. Your in-house tutor will also assess your performance and regularly visit your place of work, building a strong link with your employer.
