The TV Debut

A Career Milestone

The date is approaching soon.

Next month the documentary film Bois d’Arc Goodbye makes its national television debut. Without fanfare, I’ll cut to the chase. Here is the schedule:

Thursday, August 4, 2011 9:00pm Friday, August 5, 2011 MidnightMonday, August 15, 2011 9:30amMonday, August 29, 2011 9:00pmTuesday, August 30, 2011 MidnightFriday, Sept. 2, 2011 12:30pm

All times are central and you can catch the film on The Documentary Channel - a place with a lot of cool content that airs on channel 197 on Dish Network and channel 267 on DirectTV. Therefore, make sure to set your DVR’s early.

To remind you, the film is a personal narrative about growing up along Bois d’Arc (pronounced BO-dark) Creek and how the ecosystem and the people who live along the creek will be affected by the construction of a reservoir. You can check out the teaser video HERE.

Speaking of documentaries, I want to give a mention to my new friends Joshua Cook and Dane Kroll. The pair are working on a film about The American Way and passed through Childress last week where we discussed everything from the political landscape (the purpose of their film) to photography and filmmaking. They are ambitious and are undertaking a cross country road trip to chronicle the American voice. I wish them well.

Speaking of television, my brother Bubba and I were asked to be a part of a television show this fall.

You may remember our little web presentation Hunt Junkies that we produced a while back. Well, it seems that we’ll be using those skills on a show called The Choice. Currently, The Choice airs on The Outdoor Channel and airs three times weekly (Sundays at 11:00am central, Mondays at 12:30pm central, and Tuesdays at 8:00am).

While we won’t be on this year’s show, we’ll be spending this fall producing content that will likely air in 2012.

Summer is heating up! The second half of the year is proving to be great so far and I appreciate the support.

Make sure to holler if you have any questions.

Broken Bow Oklahoma and rainbow trout aren't always synonymous when I talk to fellow anglers.  For trout, they say, I need to head to Colorado or Northern New Mexico.  For this trip, however, we headed to Southeast Oklahoma.  Broken Bow to be exact.

Broken Bow is an incredible community.  Wedged between the Red River valley and the Kiamichi Mountains, the town deftly juggles the roles of being a culturally important area in the Choctaw territory, a mountain enclave that's a decidedly touristy vide, and a town whose Southern culture is apparent.  It's definitely a cool mix.

While I was there to fish, I couldn't help but make

mental notes of the numerous attractions that beckons me to return and bring my wife and kids.  There's go-kart tracks, canoe rentals, mini-train rides, golf, some interesting museums, swimming, and beautiful mountain scenery that undoubtedly has wildlife and hiking trails galore.  I'll go back again soon but now the fish await.

I was joined on the weekend jaunt by fellow Childress, Texas anglers John Wilson and Silas Ragsdale and we picked my brother up along the way.

My mantra is that if I want to photograph a fish, I take Silas.  He can catch fish anywhere and it wasn't long before he landed a nice rainbow trout from a rock strewn creek whose water was cold and swift.  Lined in pine trees and hardwoods, this creek is reminiscent of mountain streams

I've seen further north and west.

The streams are fed by the immense 22-mile long Broken Bow reservoir as water is released through the spillway or out of the dam for power generation.  It's cold water makes the area suitable for both introduced and native populations of brown trout and rainbow trout.

We spent the rest of the day jumping back and forth to locations along the Mountain Fork River drainage and eventually retired to our river-side cabin.  The term cabin, I discovered, is an understatement as the Thunderbird Lodge is as good accommodations as I've ever stayed.

With a full kitchen, living room, and two bedrooms, the lodge features self service accommodations that literally sits at the water's edge - and that's just the bottom part.  While we stayed at the lodge, another family rented the top floor of the lodge but with a separate

access, we would have never know they were there save for the porch visits with which we engaged.

We had a great time fishing in an area with rich scenery and natural beauty.  The people and the food at the local restaurants was wonderful and the entire experience begs my return.

What I discovered is that the

I found myself being creative
