Editor’s Note:   Hey guys! Hope you’re having a great summer! IT’ S ALMOST OVER! We’re all going be back in school soon, ISN’T THAT GREAT!? Yeah, not really but it means we get to see our friends more, we get to meet our favorite teachers again, and of course WE GET TO HAVE MORE KEY CLUB EVENTS! I know we all want summer to last forever but we have to go back to school someday!

August was sort of a slow month for Cardozo Key Club, I blame the heat, it makes us all feel lazy, but we did have some events and other special things in store this month!! I hope you guys like this month’s newsletter even though it was a little sparse content wise! Thanks for taking the time to read this guys! It really means a lot!

Yours in Caring and Service,

Amusing August Summer Streets

By Gilbert Chen

The Summer Streets event happened on August 9th. There was no meet up so I begged Michelle if she could hold one just for me, which she did because I’m just too cool obviously (hair flip). We took the bus and then did these fancy transfers. I put my entire faith in Michelle, which is obviously the reason why I used my fantastic phone to double check on how to get to the event. The moment we got out of the train station, we were lost as to where the street, in the Summer Streets event, exactly was. After role playing as Dora the Explorer, we found where we were supposed to be. The moment we got there, we whipped out our handy dandy camcorder and started to vlog, but in the eyes of others, it was just two idiots who were making strange comments and weird sound effects. We walked for miles, which were tiring, but it was fun nevertheless. We were able to talk about interesting things and were able to have fun being with each other’s presence, vlogging and taking pictures of our entire adventure, which consisted of mostly skyscrapers, scenery, dogs, and zoom ins on Michelle’s lovely face. At the end of the walk, we took a few pictures together, putting on our happy faces, but for me, it was like an awkward “I don’t belong here. Get me out of here please” facial expression. Finally, we decided to end the event and decided to go make fancy transfers to get back to Flushing. As I sit here typing this SAT material paragraph, I find the event to be worthwhile, the whole 6-7 mile walk. We got to bond together a little and had more fun than I ever imagined before I decided to participate in this event. “Happiness can be found in the smallest of things. It is our mission to transform our everyday routines into our meaningful rituals” –A quote we found on a wall during the Summer Streets event.

Amusing August JSOAP Senior Center

By Joelle Chaves

On August 17 Key Clubbers from Cardozo, Bayside, and QHSS went to the JSOAP Senior Center to volunteer. When we arrived at the center we were told to sit down in a room until we were needed. We got to bond with each other during this time, and I learned a lot of new things about the other Key Clubbers. At around 11pm we were called in to the kitchen to put on our aprons and gloves. We then went into certain rooms to get a piece of paper from the seniors that indicated whether they wanted beef or chicken, and coffee or tea as a drink. When we received the papers we were directed to main room to get the food for the seniors.

Once we were done with the smaller rooms started to help out in the main room. There were several tables that we needed to serve so it took quiet some time to finish. After finishing all the tables we had to wait until they were all finished with their food so that we can collect the trays and to help clean up. After all of that was done, us volunteers got to eat the food that was served as a “thank you”. The food was very good and the event over all was very fulfilling.

This was another one of those events that we got to personally help out the people, and got to interact with them face to face. It was such a fun event to see the seniors interact and also put on a show after lunch. I also had fun bonding with the other Key Clubbers, and I hope I get to do this event again soon!

Amusing August CPC Walk

By Cindy Hu

The CPC walkathon was a big event for the Chinese community that is held in the summer. CPC stands for the Chinese American Planning Council they provide a ton of resources for the Chinese community and has offices in the Chinatowns in New York. This big walk was to help fundraise for them and it was a lot of fun. The walk itself was not too bad as we walked over the Brooklyn Bridge and you got to enjoy the nice view of Manhattan. When the walk was over there were goodie bags if you donated or were sponsored, the family day fair was full of life as many Chinese people came to support CPC. The walkathon was a great summer event for key club and a great help to an organization that locally helps a lot of people.

The family day fair was an incredible event and was extremely lively with lots of kids being entertained at different booths. Kollaboration New York was there with Grace Shay, Ivan Polanco and Sung Lee to meet some of their fans and provide autographs. There was also a watermelon-eating contest for different age groups and thanks to Porsche I became stuffed with watermelon. I didn’t win but it was a fun memory of being the only girl that participated in the teen’s category.

Now A Word From Our President! Hey Cardozo Key Club!

Sadly, summer vacation is coming to an end, which means, school is coming just around the

corner! YAY?! Nope. But I hope everyone was able to have an enjoyable break! As much as many of us

dislike the workload we get in school, I really can’t wait to see you guys again, I miss all of you sooooo

so much! Even though our club meetings won’t start until club fair, we will still be having events even

before our club meetings start up again. Please try to get any of your friends to join Key Club! Key Club

welcomes anyone and everyone and we would love to expand our family tree!

I know I say this in every single one of my President’s messages but, I mean it every time I say it.

Thank you guys for showing up to events, even during summer vacation. I know I thank you guys every

time and it’s just so repetitive but I mean it with my heart every time. I would never want to take all

your hard work for granted because you really mean everything to me. I am so glad that I joined Key

Club in freshman year and never have I ever regretted a day of being a club officer. You guys are

honestly just so amazing and I am so honored to say that I’m your president. Without you guys,

Cardozo Key Club wouldn’t be where it is today and you guys make it as amazing as it is today. Please

keep up the amazing work! I promise that I’ll make this 2014-2015 an amazing service year and a year

that you won’t forget!

As much as we may dread going to school, I can’t wait to see you guys! Once the fall comes in, I

promise that there will be more Key Club events so stay updated to our posts! I love and miss you all!

Hope to see you at school and at upcoming Key Club events!

Yours in service,

Michelle Tam
