THRONGS “Oh wow! This is so freaking cool! We can see it from the top and the bottom!” That was the first thing out of my mouth when I visited this waterfall. The pretty Kedung Kayang Waterfall is totally forgotten by tourist who visit Yogyakarta. The highlight for most tourists who come out from

Yogyakarta and visit Magelang will obviously be Borobudur. The journey from Yogyakarta to Borobudur is the same distance as the journey to this waterfall. Borobudur is more to the west of Magelang, meanwhile this waterfall is located in the east of Magelang. So what is so special about this waterfall that made me suggest to you not to miss it?

First, as I said at the beginning, Kedung Kayang waterfall is very unique, you can enjoy the view of this waterfall from many different angles. From the entrance you can clearly see the sign of two choices of point a view. I decided to turn left and enjoy the waterfall and the view from the top. Later on, after I satisfied myself with the view from the top I would walk down to enjoy the view from the bottom.

Second, this waterfall is located inside the National Park of Mount Merapi. What does that mean? It means that you can get a very great view of this big waterfall with Mount Merapi in the background. The stones and the plants around the waterfall area are very nicely organized. Even though I know that they wouldn’t pay any gardener to do this.

Third, this tourism spot is a great way to spend the day if you want to visit something pretty, but have a limited budget. Rp. 4,000 ($1 = Rp. 10,000) for the entrance fee made this place somewhat busy with local travellers-mostly teenage couples and groups. I went there on Sunday and I am sure that you will have your own private waterfall if you go there on weekdays.

Fourth, this place is easy to find. Rent a motorbike and you can reach Kedung Kayang waterfall in around an hour from Yogyakarta. The waterfall is located close to Ketep watch tower, where you can see the view of Mount Merapi and Mount Merbabu. Look at the map on your phone and from Magelang, just carry on straight

through Boyolali – Mungkid road. It probably takes around 25 minutes driving and you will get there.

I hope I gave you enough reasons to visit the Kedung Kayang waterfall in the future. Let me give you an idea how to spend a day out of Yogyakarta. Start your day by chasing the sunrise in Punthuk Setumbu hill and explore Borobudur area. Grab a Kupat Tahu for your lunch and end it with visiting this lovely waterfall. That’s a great way to spend the day isn’t it?

Indonesia is a vast country with various tribes, cultures, religions, traditions, and festival. Specially when we talk

about Bali. As we know, Hinduism is the main religion practiced on Bali. The Hinduism in Bali is a lot different than the one practiced in India and the Hinduism in Bali has one of the most unique festivals called Nyepi Day.

Nyepi Day or knows as the Day of silence, is an annual event that observed to celebrate Balinese New Year. It is very contradict way to celebrate new year, while in International New Year or event Chinese New Year, we will feel the crowd, noise, fireworks, and all night long party, but in Balinese New Year we celebrated it without much sound or cheer. It is a day of reflection.

Nyepi Day is commemorated every Isakaswara (Saka New Year), a new year day as per the Sasih, the 12 month lunar calendar of Balinese people. The Balinese using the Gregorian calendar for business and government purposed and using other calendar system for the endless procession

nyepithe Day of silence

of holy days, temple anniversaries, celebrations, marriage, building house, starting business, sacred dances, and other activities defines the Balinese life.

And Nyepi Day falls on the day following the dark moon of the spring equinox and opens a new year of Saka Hindu era which began in 78 A.D.

On March 31, 2014 is the next Nyepi Day in Bali. It observed annually from 06.00 A.M. until 06.00 A.M. the following morning. No traffic is allowed, not only cars, but also people. Although Nyepi is primarily a Hindu holiday, but non – Hindu residents of Bali observe the day of silence as well, event tourists are not exempt.

It’s a 24 hours prohibition, were all restaurants, stores, and businesses throughout the island are closed, including the international airport of Ngurah Rai. The only exceptions granted are for emergency vehicles carrying those with life – threatening conditions and women about to give birth.

What should we do? Nyepi Day is a day reserved for self – reflection or self

– introspection to decide on values, eg humanity, love, patience, kindness, and all of other good things that should kept forever. On Nyepi day the world expected to be clean and starts as new. There are 4 main restrictions called Catur Brata Penyepian on this day, which are amati geni, no lighting fires; amati karya – no working; amati lelanguan – no entertainment; and amati lelungan – no travelling. The Hindus will also doing a 24 – hours fasting on this day. They stay at home with families doing meditation and try avoiding any kind of noise.

Folklore states if the island remains quite and dark throughout Nyepi, it will fool any lurking demons into thinking that no one is home on the island and they should visit elsewhere. It means good luck and peace for the Balinese New Year. Not only the Nyepi day in interesting, a few days before and after also have interesting ceremony occure.

The Tawur Kesanga or the Bhuta Yadnya Ritual is performed in order to vanquish the negative elements and create balance with God, Mankind, and nature. All village in Bali hold a large exorcism ceremony at

the main village cross roads, the meeting place of demon, else know as the Ogoh-ogoh festival. It was held on the eve of Nyepi day. The Ogoh-ogoh is a puppet or demonic statue, made of bamboo and other materials, in the form of mythological

beings, mostly demons named Bhuta Kala (Bhuta : eternal energy, Kala: eternal time). It is considered a symbol of modes of nature that form the malicious characters of living beings.

The ogoh–ogoh are made by the group of artist or youth found in Banjar in each village. It will be carried around the village to bewilder the evil spirit so they go away and finally burnt into ashes as a way of exorcising evil.

So, being in Bali during this time, it is a very unique cultural experience and celebrate this marvelous festivals and most honored annual tradition of Balinese Hinduism

to bring good luck and peace in our lives one you willnever forget.

Nias Island is a beautiful island located in a chain of island parallel to the west coast of Sumatera and part of

North Sumatera province. In this province has archipelago consists of 131 islands and Nias Island is the biggest of them.

On November 2011, I had the opportunity to visit Nias Island. It was a prize from a photo contest, a very rare prize and I was very happy that I won that trip. I departed from Denpasar in the morning in the first day then joined the committee who held the contest in Jakarta. Together, we flew to Polonia Airport, Medan, North Sumatera. Arriving in Medan, we had to

take a flight again to Binaka Airport, a small airport in Gunung Sitoli that located in Nias Island.

After landing at Binaka Airport, we were picked up by several local guides who will accompany us in Nias Island for 4 days. Our first destination was Nias Heritage Museum. In this museum there were many arts and cultural heritage of Nias. There were some megaliths stone sculptures supposedly hundreds of years old. Taking photographs inside the museum was prohibited, I felt a little disappointed but we had to respect the local rules and regulations. After looking around and knowing the history in Nias Heritage Museum, we were headed to the first motel called Miga Beach Inn, still located in Gunung Sitoli area.

In the second day we were going to the next destination called Bawomataluo Village to see War Dance and Hombo Batu tradition. We could see Hombo Batu tradition printed on Indonesian money (Rp1000,00 in 1992 edition) and seeing this lively and directly was very exciting.

Bawomataluo which means Hill of the Sun located in District Fanayama, South Nias. “Ya’ahowu” was a greeting said by Mr. Ariston Manao, the head of Bawomataluo village. We then taken to meet Mr. Hikayat, elder in Bawomataluo and the leader in the War Dance. He was wearing Nias traditional costume for this tradition.

War Dance presented by hundreds of men dressed as warrior. With Mr. hikayat commands, they were cheering and dancing at the village yard. There were also some women who wore traditional dress to participate in the War Dance. The dance was so epic.

After the War Dance, they prepared Hombo Batu (Jumping The Stone). Hombo Batu was a tradition that was carried out by a young men in Nias to show that they were appropriate considered to be adult and mature physically. According to the local history, this tradition was a way to test the mental and physical of men in Nias. In the past, before the men permitted to join the war, they must take this Hombo Batu as a test.

Besides the War Dance and Hombo Batu, they also presented Feta Batu (music from the stone) performed by Mr. Hikayat and friends. Stones obtained from nature being hit with wood sticks turned out to

produce wonderful music, a very unique tradition it was.

After presented with local tradition and art performances, Mr. Hikayat at his house hosted us to have lunch. At the table presented traditional Nias food called Babae like porridge made from mashed peanuts and coconut served with rice cooked in a clay oven, and it was tasted indescribable delicious. After having lunch, we walk around the village, suddenly we surrounded by children who sell souvenirs. The souvenirs all hand made, one of the famous souvenirs was necklace that made from coconut shell, and in the past they used it to protect their neck from machete during the war.

In Nias Island there were Sorake Beach which famous for its surfing spots. There were beautiful beachside lodge with light breeze, plus great seafood for dinner.

In the third day the journey continued to the Hiliamaetaniha village located in South Nias. Along the way, there were something that caught my attention, there were grave almost every yard or next to people’s houses here, our local guide mentioned, the purpose is prevent it from the grave thieves. Reached the Hiliamaetaniha, we went around and then went to Tetegewo Megalith Site. This megalith site had been preserved by the local people for many years, to get to the site we had to pass through the bushes and jungle so need a local guide to lead us to the right way.

That was a great tour that I got in Nias, a short trip but really precious to witness the uniqueness of culture and heritage of this island.

Food is one thing every traveler want to try on their visit and Bali had a lot to offer. One interesting Balinese

traditional snack is locally know as Jaja Laklak, jaja is Balinese word for snacks. It is said to be originated from Tabanan regency in North Bali, but easily found in any area. From street side food fendor to high flying hotel restaurant, serve this traditional delicacy.

Shaped like a mini-pancakes, Jaja Laklak is made from mixed of rice flour and coconut milk. The batter later on processed on a centimeter wide Dutch-style, metal poffertjes pan. The cake later seasoned with grated coconut and a sweet

finishing touch with a pour the Balinese palm sugar syrup.

A burnt taste on the outskirt of the cake add a unique taste. Sometimes the Jaja Laklak is also served with fruit slice, the most common is using jackfruit, but If you don’t like jackfruit banana slice would also do well. Fresh taste from fruit combine with savory taste of the cake gives an amazing taste.

Size doesn’t matter when I come to taste, these small cakes and its mouth-watering syrup served with a cup of Balinese coffee really gives you a sensational taste, a sweet taste of Jaja Laklak, a sweet taste of Bali.

Mesmerizing Indonesian Archipelago

Indonesia is a huge archipelago consisting of thousands of islands that stretch from the westernmost point of Sabang to the easternmost point

of Merauke. From Miangas island the northmost to Rote island the southmost, it spread to more than 17.508 islands with over 1 million km2 making Indonesia a massive sand box to explore. This huge archipelago is endowed with a beauty of diverse cultures and nature with distinctive flora and fauna.

There are eight major islands or island groups in this enormous chain. The largest landmasses consist of Sumatra, Java,

Kalimantan (Borneo), Sulawesi (Celebes) and Irian Jaya (the western half of Papua New Guinea). The smaller islands fall into two main groups: the Molluccas to the northeast, and the lesser Sunda chain east of Bali. Bali is a unique island, which for a number of reasons can be put into a class of its own.

The favourable condition have attracted a great number of visitors to Indonesia. Visiting Indonesia means seeing and experienceing the unique diverse cultural and astonishing natural beauties that this country has to offer and explore.
