I recently had a conversation with a true advocate for the unemployed, our topic turned to resumes and what constitutes a “good” resumefrom a “bad” resume. My rst thought was that a good resume is onethat lands the candidate an interview while a bad resume doesn’t.You would be surprised at the amount of people that I visit with thattell me they have applied to possibly 100’s of positions with theirresume and they gotten no response. My response is simple; rewrite
your resume, it’s obviously not working. My quest, with this entry, is to walk through a guideline
of what to do and not to do with your resume. I sent out a simplequestion, to about 40 different hiring managers, Human ResourceManager, and other department managers that I know are involvedin the hiring process and asked what it is that grabs their eye whenthey are looking for a candidate? While the response to that questionwas as broad as the subject itself, I was able to come up with someconsensus as to what attracts attention from these managers.
Contact Information – Make sure you have your nameand a good contact number that is clearly stated on your resume. On a side not, if you are leaving a good contact number, please makesure that there is a professional message on your voicemail, youdon’t want an unprofessional voicemail being the rst impression apotential hiring manager gets when they are trying to reach you toline up an interview.
Email Address - Let me sum this point up with two goodexamples. Would you rather see [email protected] or does
[email protected] read a little better on the resume? What are key words? Key words are the reason why
so many “resume help” websites, recruiters and hiring managerstell you that you should tailor your resume to each position. Resumedatabases searches are something that; Recruiters, H.R. Managersand other hiring managers sometimes use in order to scan theirinternal system to nd resume and potential candidates for aposition. This database allows the person using it, to select certainwords or a phrase that tells the computer to pull all the resumes withthose words or phrases in them for the manager to review. One tip:Where do the hiring manager’s get the keywords? Usually from the
job posting, since they’ve usually helped with writing the description.Spelling and Grammar Mistakes – Proffreading is
something that needs to be done before eash resume submission. Can you see why? “An & And” remember that when you mean to sayand, that it is and, leaving the “d” off is still a correctly spelled word, however it’s not used in the correct form.
Objective/Goal Statements, Yes or No? - Most all ofthe hiring managers told me NO – they would rather see that spacedevoted to a stronger understanding of the candidate’s previousposition or skill set.
Professional Photo - The only issue that receiveda resounding NO was a picture on your resume. Not only is it adistraction, there are legal implications because of individual status,
gender, and race. Anything that will provide protected or individualstatus is a big no.
Hobbies/Family/Past Times - No. Never disclose yourmarital status, how many children, or grandchildren, you have or whatyou do in your spare time. Also, no birthdates, wedding anniversarydates, or years you graduated high school or college.
Fonts/Scripts - Keep it simple, 10-12 point font size, no
scripts – even if you think they are “pretty” they do not set you apart, and the wrong ones can be rather annoying to try and decipher.
Professional Certications – By all means, make sure thatthe professional certications that you hold are spelled out. Do NOTmake the hiring manager guess as to what your certication is, ormore importantly how in pertains to the position you are applying forwith their company.
Do I include my volunteer work, if I am unemployed? -Yes! This shows the hiring manager that you are still actively involvedin the community and you are at least trying to build a network thatcould prove useful in your new role.
Is there a correct way to use dates for your previouspositions? - No hard and fast rule on this one, however one thingI always tell people is never just use from year to year, i.e. 2007 to2010. Make sure to include a month along with the year. Shouldyou have a job within the same year (2010-2010) it is acceptable toinclude a short sentence as to why you left the position.
Chronological vs. Functional Resumes? - This questionelicited a very mixed response. I found that the responses that said“chronological” were mostly for positions that I’ve known not to be“technical” in nature. What do I mean? I see that I.T/Engineeringand other Science based positions, those hiring managers like tosee functional, compared to accounting, administrative, and othermore non-science based positions were drawn to the Chronological.Summation – if it is science related – functional is ne, but for most ofthe people reading this, chronological.
I have too much experience for just one page. – Theshort response to that statement is, No you don’t. The HumanResource Managers I spoke with all said the same thing – stick to aone page resume. 10-15 years of work experience is plenty, and weare all hoping that is just one page for you.
What about my “responsibilities”- A lot can be saidabout the verbs that you use in your resume. For the most part, someof the words/phrases to stay away from are: Responsible for – GoodCommunicator – Experienced – Can work on a deadline – Team Player.Don’t just use these words, show where these skills were applicablein your previous positions.
References upon request - References will be requested, and hopefully those references that you’ve already reached out too
and let them know they maybe getting a call from this company. There is not use to have this statement on your resume.
