The Israel Matz Institute for Jewish Law was established in 1963 by Prof. Menachem Elon, who was later appointed as deputy to the President of the Supreme.

deputy to the President of the

Supreme Court of Israel.

The institute is located on Mount

Scopus, in one of the original

buildings of the Hebrew University,

built in 1925.

The institute is dedicated to promoting

the research and teaching of Jewish

(Halakhic) law.

Special emphasis is given to making

Jewish law challenging and relevant to

modern legal discourse, in Israel and

abroad.

Among its scholars the prominent Jewish

law researchers of the past decades:

The Institute for Jewish Law is part of the Faculty of

Law of the Hebrew University of Jerusalem, which is

the flagship of judicial education and research in

Israel.

Among the faculty alumni are nearly every Justice in

Israel’s Supreme Court, past and present, as well as

the heads of the judicial system in Israel.

This gives special importance to the ascription of the

Institute for Jewish Law to the Faculty of Law, as

being the leading academic institution in the world to

the research of Jewish law.

occupying key positions in Jewish Law research

and teaching at universities all over Israel.

2. Many leading publications in Jewish law.

3. Publishing 25 volumes of The Hebrew Annual of

The Institute’s Current activities:

1. Instruction of courses of Jewish law at the Faculty of

law.

2. Collaboration with The Sacher Institute for Legislative

Research and Comparative Law, in order to promote

the publication of research books in Jewish law.

3. Continuation of publishing volumes of The Hebrew

Annual of Jewish Law: Shenaton haMishpat haIvri.

4. English Publication of the Jewish Law Annual.

Future Goals

The Center for Advanced Studies in Jewish Law will

significantly leverage the position of Jewish law with

regard to the legal discourse in Israel, including the

following activities:

• Develop a master degree program in Jewish law.

• Establish a framework for writing doctoral dissertations in Jewish Law

• Develop and implement international conferences for leading scholars in Israel and abroad.

• Continue research collaboration between Jewish law scholars and researchers in other legal fields.

• Host foreign researchers and create a framework for post-doctoral students.

• Establish scholarships for advanced studies abroad.
