The car weighs only 1850 pounds and is powered by a 470 cubic inch, 900+ horsepower Chevy engine which hangs off the left side of the frame for Increased corner speeds. The 900 horsepower methanol fueled engine is directly coupled to the rear drive axle; supermodifieds have no clutches or transmissions. This direct drive arrangement helps reduce the rotating weight for increased acceleration and is the reason the supermodified has to be pushed to be started. The methanol fuel that is used is an alcohol fuel which is a non- petroleum product that helps produce increased power and is safer and more environmentally friendly than gasoline. The aerodynamic bodywork and wings are made of aluminum. The top- mounted wing rear supports are connected to air cylinders which allows the wing to rotate into a horizontal position in the straightaways. This "planing" of the wing reduces drag which allows greater straightaway speeds. The wing then returns to its more vertical position in the turns producing more down force resulting in higher cornering speeds for the car. This articulating top wing, as well as the low, fixed front wing, work together to create and balance the down force which produces extremely high corner and straightaway speeds and helps create the excitement only experienced in a supermodified race. The supermodifieds can produce cornering speeds which generate cornering accelerations up to approximately 2.8 times the acceleration of gravity. This cornering force can rival the forces a fighter pilot experiences. The supermodified suspension is typically unique to each race car as well. Many car designers use a pushrod type, rocker arm suspension in the front which is similar to the designs used in Indy race cars. This moves the shock absorbers and springs “under the hood” and out of the air stream for reduced aerodynamic drag. A look at the rear suspension will reveal a large variety of designs as well. To help support the agile maneuverability of these unique cars the suspension attacks the track through tires that are unequal size and different compound/construction at each corner. The high cornering accelerations of the ISMA supermodified produce weight transfer in the turn from the inside wheels to the outside wheels. To help maintain weight on the inside wheels while cornering in the counterclockwise race direction, the engine placement outside of the left side of the frame helps produce a weight distribution that starts with approximately 2/3 of the car’s weight on the wheels on the inside of the turn. As the car enters the turn the weight that is transferred to the outside wheels increases the force on the outside wheels providing a more balanced inside-to-outside weight, maximizing cornering traction and increasing cornering speeds. The result of all this technology gives the ISMA winged supermodifieds the speed of an Indy car and the maneuverability of a midget race car. It’s not uncommon to see a pack of winged supers three and four abreast, darting in and out of traffic and changing lanes in the middle of the turns. ...while having the ability to reach speeds of 160 mph! THE ISMA SUPERMODIFIED:

A PURE-BRED RACE MACHINE

LIKE NO OTHER!

The ISMA winged supermodified is a pure-bred racing machine. It's chrome-moly steel tube frame is hand-built, with special considerations for light-weight, high-strength, placement and safety of the driver, engine placement and placement of suspension components. The methanol fuel that is used is an alcohol fuel which is a non-petroleum product that helps produce increased power and is safer and more environmentally friendly than gasoline.

The aerodynamic bodywork and wings are made of aluminum. The top-mounted wing rear supports are connected to air cylinders which allows the wing to rotate into a horizontal position in the straightaways.

Without a doubt, supermodifieds are the ULTIMATE in short track racing machines! There’s nothing like watching an ISMA race anytime, anywhere to get your heart pounding. And while you are enjoying the excitement of an ISMA race make sure you hang onto your hat; the wings on the supermodified move so much air upwards to produce their downforce that a group of them passing by in front of you can literally lift the hat off your head! See you soon at an ISMA race near you and together we will "hang onto our hats"!
