IPA system

• The IPA system of notation is particularly useful for a scientific study of the sounds of the world’s languages because it has a one-to-one correspondence between a unit of linguistic sound (phone) and a letter symbol.

• As of 2008, there are 107 distinct letters, 52 diacritics, and 4 prosody marks in the IPA proper.
