INTERNET OFTHINGSA look quick look into the world of digital physical and it’s meaning for your brand.

Presentation by @rhyshillman, Digital Strategist at GPY&R Melbourne.

Page 2: The Internet of Things

Oh No! Another advertising buzzword.... RUN AND HIDE!

Page 3: The Internet of Things

Well to be fair, it has been around since 1999, first coined by Kevin Ashton. Don’t recognise the name? Well Kevin was THE dude behind

RFID (Radio-Frequency Identification).

Page 4: The Internet of Things

The Internet of Things is a term that describes where the Internet

is connected to the physical world via ubiquitous sensors

“ “So, since Ashton coined the term, who better to simply explain it?

Page 5: The Internet of Things

It’s been around for 10+ years, if you still don’t like the phrase, well... this is me right now....

Page 6: The Internet of Things

Cool, so we’ve dealt with the phrase... So how about we put a little thought into how The Internet of Things is currently being used.

“PARKSIGHT”

Page 8: The Internet of Things

Parking is a problem in LA (most big cities, but it’s launched here) and it is having an adverse effect on climate change...

ISSUE

Page 9: The Internet of Things

If you can reduce the hassle involved with getting a car-park, you are reducing the overall time a vehicle is running. Therefore contributing less greenhouse gasses into the atmosphere...

INSIGHT

“45% of surveyed drivers were circling blocks, looking for street parking” - NYU Study.

Page 10: The Internet of Things

SOLUTION

StreetLine worked with Cisco to develop ‘ParkSight’. A mobile app that used industry leading sensor technology to provide realtime data straight to your mobile phone.

Helping drivers easily locate open parking spaces, reducing overall engine run-time.

ISSUE

While technology such as our mobile phones, cars & computers have evolved rapidly over the last 20 years, other important every day products haven’t.

Page 15: The Internet of Things

INSIGHT

We can get an alert on our phone about the news, bills, or who’s posted on our Facebook wall - But what about when we’ve left the garage door open or you’ve got a leak in your plumbing?

In an ever busy life, consumers demand tools that streamline their every day tasks without having a masters degree in electronic engineering.

Page 16: The Internet of Things

SOLUTION

“Twine” - A new Digital Physical adaption created to keep you connected.

With the ability to detect temperature, orientation, magnetic switch, moisture and breakouts, which once set off will alert you via anything from email, through to text. You now have digital accessibility to your truly ‘smart’ house

SO WHAT ELSE IS OUT THERE?

Page 19: The Internet of Things

“IFTTT”

IFTTT (If This Then That) is a social service tool, allowing you to make simple connections between your digital lives via API hook-ups.

A trigger (for example a new article on BuzzFeed is posted) occurs, you can then set up one of hundreds of actions on another platform, so every time there is a new article it automatically tweets for you or stores on Pocket to read later... RSS Feed on steroids!

“NO PLACE LIKE HOME”

Remember Dorothy’s infamous red shoes that could take her home from anywhere at the click of a heel?

Well, Dominic Wilcox made these using imbedded GPS and LED technology. Combining for the ability to guide you back to your pre-set ‘home’ destination

While not the most overly useful tool when compared to a Mobile phone in 2012, it’s still an exciting new little prototype, combining existing tech to make something new and interesting.

BUT WHAT’S STOPPING INTERNET OF THINGS

TAKING OVER THE WORLD?

Page 24: The Internet of Things

The challenge for The Internet of Things service providing products, is that major clients need the bravado to adopt them,

commercialisation is key to evolution!

Page 25: The Internet of Things

THIS IS ALL COOL AND WHATEVER... BUT HOW IS IT RELEVANT TO MY BRAND?

Page 26: The Internet of Things

The Internet of Things gives brands the ability to connect human acts, nature, machines,

objects and information in both physical and virtual spaces. Talking, interacting and

empowering the end user.

Page 27: The Internet of Things

Instead of talking to potential users like kids, give them some utility based content that they can engage with, feel a part of, and overall bring them closer to your brand.

Seriously, I’m not going to go on about it as it’s old news now, but look what R/GA & Nike did with their Fuel Band... It’s all there for you,

dive in and start having a play.
