new and differentiated solutions to the market.

At the recently concluded Lakme Fashion Week, Godrej Interio presented Freestile, a path-breaking modular sitting solution that can be used as a bed, a couch in the library, a lounge style sofa, or even a hybrid of all of them. The skins of this limited edition sofa collection were designed exclusively by Anita Dongre, a leading fashion designer, keeping the season’s fashion trends in mind.

The Freestile collection is part of Godrej Interio’s new Design HQ range. This new segment is an integral part of the Godrej Interio offering as a separate line of furniture concepts which are progressive in terms of its look, feel, functionality and application. The company claims that this collection is poised to craft the ‘future of furniture design’ globally. The limited edition range is available at six leading cities across the country.

Commenting on the launch of the collection, Mr. Anil Mathur, COO said, “Design HQ is an initiative instituted and owned by the designers at Godrej Interio.

It assumes multiple dimensions - right from congregating creative thinkers from various walks of life, to mentoring young designers and showcasing innovation and lifestyle across various niche and mainstream platforms. The endeavour is to create new-age concepts and designs that will set trends. It focuses on designs that enhance aesthetic living and push the envelope on creative functionality.”

Godrej Interio showcased its limited edition range designed by Anita Dongre at the Lakme Fashion Week that was held in Mumbai recently. In order to accentuate the fresh and innovative design of the new Freestile, Anita Dongre added a tint of the Rajasthani arts and crafts and the brilliant hues of summer to its skins. The collection, targeted at contemporary homes, assumes the role of a ‘chic functional art piece’ adding warmth and vibrancy to your living spaces.

The l imited edition range included five skins for Freestile i.e Indigo Summer, Summer Spice, Midnight Summer, Tropical Summer & Summer leaf. Contact: www.godrejinterio.com

At the CUGS (Congress on Urban Green Spaces) 2012 held in Delhi, Alex

Davis leading artist and designer presented a proposal that was not only innovative but ‘green’ as well. Held at the India International Centre on March 5th to 7th Alex Davis highlighted the aesthetic identity of the world’s fourth largest greenest capital, namely Delhi.

Alex Davis explains, “Dilli is the original garden city in its various stages of formation. New Delhi, designed by Edwin Lutyens and Herbert Baker, who come from the background of the ‘garden city design movement’, conceived Delhi as the seat of power in a well laid out garden with its avenues and circles. Old Delhi was designed by Shahjahan as his capital, seated amidst gardens of paradise, using the rigorous format of the Moghul garden plan with its water canals and plantations.

This city contained some of the most celebrated char baghs and gardens like Mehtab Bagh, Hayat Bakshi Bagh, Tees Hazari Bagh, Begum Bagh, Roshanara Bagh etc. which were hallmarked as some of the world’s best Moghul grounds of its times.”

Aptly calling his presentation the ‘Dilli Bagh’ project, Alex viewed the Ashoka tree as his motif (extensively used in gardens as well as in miniature paintings in the past) for his installation which he

sees marking a natural ‘gateway’ to the entry into the city, positioned prominently at all the entry points of the National Highway into the capital.

His images and models enjoyed a prominent stage at the CUGS 2012 in Delhi, where the proposed overall dimensions of the horticultural installations were 75 meters tall and 14 meters in diameter, with a surface area of 1600 square cms, spanning 25 floors. The proposal has been with the State Government for some time, and the presentation was basically to clarify the feasibility of the project.Contact: www.alexdavisstudio.com

Duravit’s Clever Way Of Saving WaterDuravit presents a new dry urinal that promotes the conscious use of water and aims to conserve our ecosystem.

With its new generation of Architec urinals, Duravit is making an important contribution to saving water intelligently. Thanks to a hose membrane integrated in the outlet, Architec Dry flushes without any water whatsoever. This membrane only opens when urine flows through. It then closes again and keeps unpleasant sewer odours at bay.

This gel is based on purely

organic substances that are gradually flushed away during use and wet the membrane. A special mix of pH neutral and active cleaning ingredients fights stubborn dirt and urine scale before it gains a hold.

Architect Dry is operated without any water pipes, tap fittings or flushing water whatsoever. This makes Architec Dry a cost-effective alternative to urinals with a conventional flush. The outlet with membrane only has to be replaced after about 7,500 uses.Contact tel +91 7966112338, web : www.duravit.com

Everybody has witnessed local construction workers struggling to carry cement,

bricks and other types of load; we often sympathise with them and then return to our own busy lives. Designer Vikram Dinubhai Panchal of The National Institute of Design (NID), Ahmedabad was an exception and wished to make a difference to their lives.

The young industrial designer created an exceptional product called the ‘Load Carrier for Labour’ for a contest arranged by Core 77 which won accolades in the product and equipment category. The simple and yet innovative load carrier design has two major parts, one that holds the load and the other that rests on the shoulder. The product has two knobs, which facilitates the change of required function manually

This allows three modular functions for carrying lighter loads on the head, medium loads on your back and heavier loads that you can push or pull as a trolley

Ergonomical ly the load is distributed on the shoulder and at the lumber region which is supported by a softer material. The total weight

of the load carrier is 2 kgs and would cost around Rs. 300 if mass produced.

The objective of creating the device was to prevent various occupational hazards and facilitate three methods of lifting and shifting of loads by workers - above the head, on the back and a push or pull action. The structure is made from cane, plastic and metal components.

If the design materialises into a finished product, it will enhance the working conditions of labourers and workers in India as well as in many other countries. The cane oriented product can be used on construction sites, factories, ports, railway stations and many other similar venues and will prove to be a boon for construction workers.

To take his design idea ahead, Panchal is on the look out to find a sponsor who can help market or a manufacture his creation to ensure it reaches the end user. “I would like to make this design principle more versatile by using metal and plastic. I am open for any organisation who is interested in sponsoring, marketing or manufacturing.” Says the young designer. We wish him luck to find the right partner.

All roads led to South Mumbai, as the Kala Ghoda Arts Festival’s week-long carnival

of literature, theatre, dance, music, films and visual art, saw Mumbaites throng downtown to partake in activities that ranged from rock concerts, literary workshops, culinary classes, heritage walks and even a

treasure hunt for kids! The festival held every Feb since

1999 is a fun filled fiesta that aptly reflects the life and times of the city. The pavement installations and kitschy art were not only fascinating

to look at, but had local flavour woven into them as well - like the giant pyramid of ‘cutting chai’ glasses that echoes our penchant for tea or the black sculptured crows strewn around that did not look one bit out

Kitschy At Kala Ghoda The Kala Ghoda Arts Festival gets its moniker from the black equestrian statue of Edward VII that used to stand in the fort area of Mumbai.

of place! Even the ‘Noise Pollution’ ears conveyed the sound assault we have to deal with everyday.

Interestingly, dustbins were scattered around that encouraged one to throw away their doubts and fears (only wish there was a pad and pencil available for us to actually do so). The ‘Smoking is Injurious to Health’ installation really hit home with cigarette butts stubbed out in an ashtray of human bones (yuck!).

The most buzz was around Rampart Row as the road was lined with eclectic street shops and food stalls selling nibbles from popular restaurants around the area.

W h e t h e r y o u w a n t e d to browse the art shops, gawk at the over-the-top installations or simply nosh on some spicy chaat, Kala Ghoda had all the bells and whistles.

Renowned santoor Maestro Pandit Satish Vyas , pop rock band The Other People, Austrian music composer and drummer Lukas Ligeti, Ali Zafar and bollywood biggies Vishal and Shekhar were some of the musical acts that performed at the Cross Maidan Garden and the Asiatic Steps.Contact: web: www.kalaghodaassociation.com

The mega project is designed by Chicago based Adrian Smith +

With a total construction area of 530,000 sq.meters, the $ 20 billion project is expected to be the heart of the city which will comprise of a luxury hotel, office space, serviced apartments, luxury condominiums and the world’s

highest observatory. Talal Al-Maiman, a board member

of Kingdom Holding Company (KHC) and Jeddah Economic Company, which was formed in 2009 to develop Kingdom City in Jeddah said, “Kingdom Tower’s height is remarkable, obviously, but the building’s iconic status will not depend solely on that. Its form is brilliantly sculpted, making it quite simply the most beautiful building in the world of any height.”

An evolution in sky scrapper design, the Kingdom Tower includes

a unique three petal footprint which is ideal for residential units, the tapering wings produce an aerodynamic shape that helps reduce structural loading due to wind vortex shedding. The structure of the building is sleek and is inspired by the folded fronds of young desert plants which sprout upward from the ground as a single form and then start separating from each other at the top.

The project will also feature a high performance exterior wall system that will minimize energy consumption by reducing thermal loads. Each of Kingdom Tower’s three sides features a series of notches that create pockets of shadow that shield areas of the buildings from the sun and provide outdoor terraces with stunning views of Jeddah and the Red Sea.

The completion of this project will also lead to increased development around it. The area surrounding the Kingdom Tower is known as the ‘Kingdom Tower Waterfront’ district which will provide a cohesive and pedestrian friendly ambience while creating a pleasant neighborhood experience.

On completion, the Kingdom Tower will become a culturally significant icon that will symbolize the nation’s wealth and power.Contact: Adrian Smith + Gordon Gill Architecture LLP, 111 West MonroeSuite 2300, Chicago IL 60603tel 312 920 1888 email: [email protected]: www.smithgill.com

The traditional clay ‘matka’ is still used to keep water cool by a majority of the Indian

population. The same clay pot technique has been transformed to create a variety of kitchen products under the brand name ‘Mitticool.’

This venture has been spearheaded by Mr. Manshuk Lal Prajapati, who began his career as a supervisor in a roof tile company in Gujarat. Initially, he started making a tavdi (tawa) from taraquta mud which received a fantastic response from the market. Egged on by the positive feedback, Mr. Prajapati continued to launch other products such as a water filter, refrigerator and even a non-stick tawa.

However, his most exceptional p roduct i s the ‘Mit t i Coo l Refrigerator’ which does not require any electricity or batteries. It works on the basic principle of evaporation - here water from the upper chambers drips down the sides and evaporates, taking with it the heat from the inside, leaving the chambers cool. The upper chamber is used to store water and a clay lid covers the top of the refrigerator. A small faucet is also provided at the lower end

of the chamber to draw water for drinking. In the lower chamber two shelves are provided to store food. The first shelf can be used for storing vegetables, fruits etc. and the second shelf can be used for storing milk and other liquids.

Cool and affordable, this clay refrigerator is a very good option to keep food, vegetables and even milk naturally fresh for days.

There is a huge demand for his

products all across the globe. “My aim is to provide luxury to rural folk who can’t afford electronic goods.” He beams about his achievement.

By his simple scientific methods he has also created a conventional ‘Non Stick Tawa’ which is black in colour as it acts as a good heat absorber and is ideal for cooking. His clay ‘cooker’ has been made from special clay through which one can make tasty food which is also healthy and hygienic.

His ‘Mitticool Water Filter’ can store upto 10 litres of water and comprises of two chambers. One has to fill water in the upper chamber and the filtered water will automatically flow to the lower chamber. The filter cleans 2 litres of water in 1 hour, and ideally, you can fill the upper chamber at night and have the filtered water ready for use in the morning.

Mr. Prajapati has won many prestigious awards from various organisations and Forbes magazine has also ranked him amongst the ‘Top 7 Rural Entrepreneurs in India.’Contact: tel: 02828 221156 web: www.mitticool.in
