What I think it is…

• INSIDE- deals with Christina’s situation of being trapped in a single room.

• EXPERIENCE- deals with the participation of both Christina and the audience communicating with one another. It has never been done before so it is a new experience for both parties.

Intel and Toshiba

• “The Inside Experience, that marries big blockbuster filmmaking with social networking.”

• “This is a completely new genre of Hollywood-class entertainment where the audience can play as much of a role as the A-list talent and actors. Using social media you can interact with characters in real time, affect the plot…”

What is The Inside Experience?

• It is a social film experience broadcast in eight episodes online but was later combined to form a feature length film.

• It is a live entertainment experience, blending film and social media.

• Sponsored by Intel and Toshiba, it was the first of its kind.

• A Toshiba laptop is used throughout the film and is the only way for Christina Perasso to communicate with the outside world and escape the abandoned room.

• The audience also played a massive role in the film; using social media, they interacted with Christina in real time via Facebook and Twitter giving her all the support she needed.

• Inside is a Social Film experience brought to you by Intel and Toshiba, directed by DJ Caruso, starring Emmy Rossum, and possibly you.

Transmedia Experience

• The Inside Experience was made by a professional crew who were not new to film-making but possibly new to online film-making. The film definitely had a Hollywood feel to it.

• Hollywood began to recognise social online film as a marketable genre; as a result, they brought in director- DJ Caruso and actress- Emily Rossum.

• It was an experiment to see if online film could have the same impact on an audience the same way a Hollywood Blockbuster could without the high budget.

Transmedia Experience

• They sometimes produce a series of episodes of dramas using their products with celebrities.

• It is arguable that because Christina is constantly on her laptop, the film is based around it and therefore purposely advertising it.

Transmedia Experience

• Unsurprisingly, The Inside Experience audience grew to a whopping 50,000 members all contributing their part in real-time.

• Transmedia was used throughout the film, in particular with the clues which would lead to Christina’s whereabouts. Christina also needed a certain amount of ‘likes’ on Facebook in order for her to be fed.

Transmedia Experience

• Audience members uploaded casting calls onto YouTube to feel closer to the experience. Eventually one was chosen to be in the film.

• Collaboration is a way of engaging audiences, fans and creatively-inclined people to participate in a new level of engagement with traditional film culture.

Episode 1

• The first scene opens with an introduction with our main character- Christina Perasso. She wakes up without the faintest of ideas of how she got there. The room she’s locked up in seems to be deserted; it is very dark and gloomy and makes it clear that Christina has been abandoned.

• She has been left with one of the latest Toshiba laptops to connect with

people over the biggest social networking site ‘Facebook’ which gives us an early understanding of why it is called ‘The inside Experience.’

Episode 2

• This episode opens with a quote from a Facebook user: “Heat will cause you to get sluggish… get as much water as you can”- Kevin Barnett via Facebook.

• This shows how involved and important the audience are within the film.

• Christina uses another social networking application- Skype to connect with a head police officer in a failed attempt to help her escape.

Page 12: The inside experience slideshow

Episode 3

• Opens with another quote- “We may need to reevaluate your friends after all…”- Lonni Gary via Facebook

• She uses another social networking site- Twitter to keep in contact with the outside world.

• She is given a music box to keep herself a bit entertained.

• One tweet mentioned to her asks her to remember the first time she ever played the music box and how it was always her escape zone.

• Christina is given an envelope that requests her to get enough ‘likes’ on Facebook in aid for her to get more food and water. This is an example of participatory culture.

Page 13: The inside experience slideshow

Episode 4

• Another quote opening: “PEANUTS and WATER is not being FED!!!”- Patrick Longalong via Facebook

• She gets enough likes from Facebook and is rewarded with a greasy burger and chips.

• She then takes a shower without realising that there is a camera in the showerhead.

Page 14: The inside experience slideshow

Episode 5

• “You will get a meal, and hopefully a shower and a good nights sleep. After this and only after this will we continue to play this charade…”- Ernie Fascio via Facebook

• Kirk Francis (ex boyfriend) posts a video concerned about Christina’s safety and explains he’s been out of town trying to move on from their break up. This rules him out of a potential suspect of the kidnapping.

Page 15: The inside experience slideshow

Episode 6

• “Just stay calm…”-Heather Corder via Facebook. • She wakes up and notices her laptop has been

moved to the other side of the room. • The first thing she reads are comments from

Facebook users. • She watches the video that the kidnapper has

uploaded of her in the shower. • She smashes the whole room up in fury and cuts

the power. • (Another short episode)

Page 16: The inside experience slideshow

Episode 7

• “It’s time to take a leap of faith and believe…”- Shawn Morse via Facebook

• Christina records her last video which sounds like she has given up and appears to have taken the tablet her kidnapper left for her.

Page 17: The inside experience slideshow

Final Episode

• “Over and out”- Christina Perasso via Youtube

• This suggests that it is the final episode.

• Christina appears to be passed out/dead on the floor, the kidnapper walks in with a wheelchair and sits Christina down on it.

• He turns around and Christina gets up, grabs the laptop and locks him in the room before turning the heat up in the room.

• She then meets her friends and her father in the airport.
