Demystifying Software Globalization

More and more people all over the world have been using the computers and the Internet for all kinds of data and information exchange. However, as most of the information is in English, people in countries like China or Japan, are not comfortable using the software written in English. So, this emergence gave birth to a new eld called multilingual computing. I'm really just trying to set a minimum bar here so that everyone after reading this article will think while writing any piece of code whether it will work internationally or not, i.e., in any language other than the subset of English.

Globalization means preparing businesses and products for success in international markets. Indian grown mangoes are now available worldwide. Australian Kiwis shine at Marriage party

Fruit Counters. China Apples are now more common than Kashmiri Apples. China Toys and Mobiles is a phenomenal success story in itself. McDonalds, Pizza Hut, KFC are all international chain of restaurants. Even a single appliance at our home or any food item that we eat is made up of components from as many as 20 different countries.

Globalization (G11n) = Internationalization (I18n) + n * Localization (L10n)

Translators are not programmers. Everything that needs to be localized should be in a data le somewhere: to create a localized version, one should not have to change source code, recompile, re-link, etc. Internationalization refers to the process of designing an application to facilitate localization. It means separating translatable text strings from the executable code. Localization involves adapting cultural and linguistic elements of an internationalized application to n culturally-distinct markets.

Developing Global Applications in Java: Java's native character encoding is Unicode. Unicode provides a unique number for every character, no matter what the platform, no matter what the program, no matter what the language. Unicode character set, class Locale and class ResourceBundle are the keys for software globalization in Java.

Every software should be internationalized in a manner so that it can be localized further to handle multiple languages, scripts, and cultural conventions (currency, sorting rules, number / date formats) and features without the need for redesign. The aim is to aid software in tackling the real world problems by providing a customized natural language interface to the users of the system across the globe.
