Calling for writers for the 2021 edition of the Lenten Devotional Booklet Our Lenten Devotional Booklet for 2021 will be entitled Lead Me, Guide Me. The theme will

be centered on places and journeys that have been significant for us in our spiritual growth-not

only churches, but mountain tops, valleys, summer camps, workplaces, homeplaces,

retreat spots, hospital rooms, or even a favorite shade tree. Do you have a story of a place that

has been meaningful to you? Or do you have a story of a journey or trip that was

transformative for you and led you to new insights? Now is a great time to remember, reflect,

and write. Please contact Pastoral Services for the guidelines and to save a spot on our writer’s

list for 2021. We welcome your submission!

DIETITIAN’S DIGEST

Do You Need To Shake The Salt Habit? I have some news that will blow your mind – we eat too much salt. Shocking,

right? I’m just kidding around because this is pretty common knowledge.

Restaurants load their recipes up with it and processed, packaged food is

swimming in it. Salt is our greatest source of sodium and too much sodium is the

greatest cause of high blood pressure. Do you have high blood pressure? Well,

according to the American Heart Association (AHA), so does half of the American adult

population. That means there is a 50/50 chance you’ve been told to reduce the amount of

sodium you eat. It’s important to understand where all this salt is coming from so you can figure

out how to control how much you eat.

The AHA recommends we consume no more than 2300mg of sodium per day, but further

recommends we should try for a loftier goal of 1500mg per day, especially if you have heart or

kidney disease or high blood pressure. On average, most people consume 3400mg per day - we

have some work to do. So how much salt are we talking here?

One teaspoon of salt equals 2300mg of sodium. That is what you should aim for to be your lim-

it for the day. This is not just what you can add to your food at the table, this is the total for what

you can add at the table, add while you are cooking, eat at restaurants, and eat in packaged

foods. That can be a pretty tough goal. Check with the nutrition facts label on your food pack-

ages to find out how much sodium is in your food. If you don’t know how to read the label, I

can help with that.

Even if you don’t currently have high blood pressure, limiting sodium now can significantly

reduce the rise in blood pressure that naturally happens as we age. It can also reduce the

chances of developing other health problems such as kidney disease. So get shaking now to

shake that salt habit!

We are pleased to now offer Fun Fridays in the Pool!

Aqua Zumba

® and Aqua Yoga will now be offered on alternating Fridays at 10:00 am.

Aqua Zumba®,

with Heather is an excellent therapy for individuals who suffer from joint prob-

lems. Those who have had a hip or knee replacement surgery can opt for these workouts.

Several studies have proven that aqua Zumba can reduce inflammation in the joints, as the

hydrostatic pressure from the water acts like a massage. In this form of workout, your hips, back

and knees do not feel the jerks, however, it gives low impact strength training. Aqua Zumba is

perfect for those looking to make a splash by adding a low-impact, high-energy aquatic exercise

to their fitness routine.

Aqua Yoga with Iffet is low impact and helps develop strength, static balance, and

increase in range of motion. The water environment allows a release from gravity which in turn

allows optimum stretching while simultaneously relieving body tension.

Water yoga has been used greatly to relieve stiffness and muscle pain post-surgery and also to

relieve pain as well as anxiety and stress.

Please check the calendar and call Carol Thompson at 474-8891. Beginning on Fridays in

September. Keep a lookout for more information! Maximum 8 participants.

Meet Our Contracted Fitness Instructors! Please welcome Heather Luitjohan, an AFAA certified group exercise instructor with

five years of experience.

We are also very happy to have Iffet Araniti-Davis, a certified fitness instructor. Iffet is a familiar

face and has been teaching at Cedarfield for a few years!

Personal Training

We are pleased to again offer personal training. Both individual and small

group sessions are available. Please call Carol Thompson, an ACE Certified

Personal Trainer, at 474-8891 for more information.
