great success year after year. For this support, I cannot express my grati-tude enough.
The annual sporting clays tournament pro-vides the necessary reve-nue to enable growth and ongoing support for scholarship programs at the University of Louisiana, Louisiana State University and Nicholls State University.
To everyone who con-tributed to make this tournament a great suc-cess, I want to offer my sincerest thanks and appreciation. I also would like to offer spe-cial thanks to Jeffery Svendson, Brad Duplantis and the entire Sporting Clays Committee for their strenuous efforts to orga-nize and execute this year’s tournament with great ease, safety and overall excellence.
Continuing with the theme of appreciation and good works through AADE, the rest of this article will focus on how funds raised by AADE in the past nine years are being used.
These funds, which would have not been possible without the con-tinued support from the membership and indus-try, have allowed the AADE Lafayette Chapter to cultivate, enrich and establish a strong organi-zation that can withstand the cyclical nature of the oil and gas industry.
First, let me begin
with the scholarship pro-gram. From 2001 to the present, AADE has sup-plied more than $350,000 in endowed and individ-ual scholarships to UL, LSU and NSU students.
These scholarships have had a direct impact on the lives of more than 75 petroleum engi-neering students, many of whom have now graduated and are work-ing in the oil and gas industry. In the past two years, AADE has more than doubled the num-ber of scholarships it provides, as well as increasing the scholar-ship amounts to offset rising tuition and book costs.
On top of these schol-arships, AADE Lafayette also has provided more than $75,000 to fund necessary equipment purchases, transporta-tion and support to attend industry confer-ences and sponsorship of student chapter fund-raising events.
In the past three years, the AADE Lafayette Chapter also has allocated matching funds — up to $125,000 — for renovation and equipment upgrades to the UL mud lab. Thanks to outstanding industry support, the matching contribution limit was met and is currently being used to supply the UL mud lab with much needed equipment upgrades and new purchases.
The chapter also has contributed more than $50,000 to several com-munity organizations
including Christmas for Families; Special Olympics; Acadiana youth; Lafayette Children’s Shelter; Knowledge Boxes; and the Children’s Museum.
As most of you are aware, with any success-ful organization or proj-ect, a focused vision is a must.
This organization was established with the fol-lowing purpose:
1. To recognize the importance of drilling to the oil and gas industry.
2. To attract profes-sional talent.
3. To maintain a high level of technical profi-ciency within the drill-ing business.
I believe that this vision holds true today and is clearly demon-strated in our strong commitment to the edu-cation and proper devel-
opment of technical petroleum engineering professionals.
Moving forward, my vision is to see students who have benefited from scholarships and AADE funds be willing to “give back” to the organization that was there in their time of need.
We are currently accepting board nomina-tions and it would be great to see more “new blood” entering the industry join and partic-ipate in the future of the AADE Lafayette Chapter.
Of course, serving in the organization has never been a requirement, but it is greatly accepted and appreciated.
Until next month, may you and your families have a safe April!

The Lafayette Chapter AADE has been hosting the scholarship sporting clays tournament for 17 years.
The “fund-raising” event has grown considerably over the years, as well as the proceeds it generates for petroleum industry scholar-ships. This year’s tourna-ment was no exception.
This year’s event was held at Cajun Elite Shooting Complex in Jennings, La., on March 26 and 27.
Beautiful spring weather prevailed on both days with strong north winds on the Saturday.
The course was altered from passive on Friday to very challenging on Saturday.
Other than wind damage to a few tents and perhaps a few wounded egos from the shooting course, the event concluded without any complications. Safety was a priority and on the forefront of everyone’s thoughts throughout the
entire event. Ten food sponsors pro-
vided an array of food from jambalaya and fried fish to pork chop sand-wiches and ribs and chick-en, just to mention a few of the many delectable dishes.
In addition to food spon-sors, there were an addi-tional 90 sponsors who provided tents, shooting station representation, door prizes, side shooting events and many other bits and pieces that made up the tournament.
The scores of volunteers from service companies and committee members who donated their valu-able time to help truly made the event a success. Without these countless sponsors and volunteers, the event would not have
been possible. Although there are too
many sponsors to list here, I would like to give special thanks to our platinum sponsors Baker Oil Tools, Integris Rentals, Knight and Talens Marine and Fuel.
With the current down-turn in our industry, partic-ipation and sponsorships lagged behind last year's levels by about 25 percent; however, preliminary num-bers indicate that proceeds this year will be close to last year's levels.
As in the past, proceeds will help provide oil industry scholarships and improvements to engi-neering departments at UL, NSU and LSU.
Everyone who partici-pated in this year's event — from sponsors and shooters to volunteers — played a large part in helping the AADE accom-plish its mission in pro-viding our state universi-ties with financial aid for
select students pursuing a career in petroleum engineering.
All those who partici-pated in any way should be proud of their contri-bution and for being a part of this excellent mission.
The Lafayette Chapter AADE Scholarship Sporting Clays Tournament is a premiere event in the oil & gas industry. We look forward to next year ’s event and invite those who could not be with us this year to join us for next year ’s tournament.
Seventeen years of success
