Goals of recycling bottom ash

Convert ash into valuable raw materials

1. Recovery of (non ferrous) metals down to 0,5 mm

2. Reuse ash minerals in alternative markets (NL – Greendeal - non IBC)

3. Decrease carbon footprint for WtE facilities

Technical challenges:

• Wet de-slagging at WtE facility

– This makes the ash stick together tightly

– Embedded fine NF particles are hidden in clogged minerals

• Separating heavy / light non ferro’s:

– Conventional sink-float operations are not build for particle sizes < 10 mm

• Practical knowledge and experience (how does theory work out in practice ?)

• Discharge of ash residue that is qualified as waste (EURAL Code 19.12.03)

Financial challenges:

• Optimise the balance between costs (CAPEX and OPEX) and revenues related with bottom ash recycling

• Make use of low cost technologies and create the highest possible value from recovered materials

Page 3: The Incinerator Ash Company

Strong foundation

• Inashco BV is a 100% Fondel company.

• Valorization of DUT technology

• Continuous R&D at DUT laboratory (CiTG)

Technical challenges

Knowledge

• Theoretical knowledge of the Delft University of Technology

• Experience of current annual treatment of > 2,5 million tons of bottom ash

• Characterisation of specific bottom ash flow:

– Inashc0 Laboratory:

• Moisture content

• Particle size distribution

• NF contents (heavy and light NF characterisation)

– Operatability test

Financial Impact

• ADR Technology:

– Low cost

– No impact on environment (no waste water, no extra dust, marginal use of

electricity)

• Central Upgrading Technology:

– At same cost level as sink-float operations

– No impact on environment (no waste water, no emissions, marginal use of

electricity

• High quality scrap represents best possible value from available ash contents

• Off take through Fondel marketing and trading channels guarantees

premium prices

To summarise

Convert ash into valuable raw materials

1. Recovery of more non ferrous metals down to 0,5 mm

2. Reuse ash minerals in alternative markets (NL – Greendeal - non IBC)

3. Decrease carbon footprint for WtE facilities
