Preterite

Ana cantó en la fiesta anoche.

Ana sang at the party last night.

(Completed past action.)

Imperfect The imperfect tense is

another way to talk about the past. We use it to describe actions without any indication of their beginning or end.

Imperfect

Ana cantaba. Ana was singing. (No indication of beginning

or end.)

Imperfect We use the imperfect to talk

about actions that happened repeatedly in the past. In English we often say “used to” to express this idea.

Generally they would walk a lot.

There are three irregular verbs in the imperfect. The verbs IR, SER, and VER.

The imperfect form of hay is había (there was/were, there used to be)

Use the preterite to tell about past actions that happened and are complete.

El sábado, la clase empezó a las 10 de la mañana.

Use the imperfect to tell about habitual actions in the past.

Cuando era niño, las clases empezaban a las 5 de la tarde.

Use the preterite to give a sequence of actions in the past.

Preterite vs. Imperfect

Use the imperfect when two or more actions are taking place simultaneously in the past.

Mientras los niños pintaban, el profesor observaba las pinturas.

Use the preterite and the imperfect together when an action (preterite) interrupts another that is taking place in the past (imperfect).

Yo estudiaba cuando mi hermano entró mi cuarto.

Estábamos en el taller cuando entró el profesor.

For both the imperfect and preterite tenses, there are trigger words. Here are some common trigger

words for the imperfect and preterite El Pretérito

•Anoche, ayer, el otro día, anteayer, el año pasado, el mes pasado…..

El imperfecto:•Siempre, a menudo, por lo general, usualmente, algunas veces, a veces, todos los días…..
