Abstract• Social network sites (SNSs) are increasingly

attracting the attention of academic and industry researchers intrigued by their affordances and reach. In this presentation I :

• Start by briefly introducing the concept of Sns.• Then defining how the concept of Media

(industry) has evolved mainly by the evolution of technologies like the ones involved in the deployment of Sns

• then ilustrating with some examples• addressing the question of “effects on media”• followed by a set of conclussions.

Introduction• Since their introduction, social network sites (SNSs) such as

MySpace, Facebook, twitter, Cyworld, Bebo, etc have attracted millions of users, many of whom have integrated these sites into their daily practices.

• Currently, there are hundreds of SNSs, with various technological capabilities, supporting a wide range of interests and practices. While their key technological features are fairly consistent, the cultures that emerge around SNSs are varied.

• Most sites allow strangers to connect based on shared interests, political views, or activities. Some sites cater to diverse audiences, while others attract people based on common language or shared racial, sexual, religious, or nationality-based identities.

• Sites also vary in the extent to which they incorporate new information and communication tools, such as mobile connectivity, blogging, and photo/video-sharing.

The evolution of the Media (Industry) & Social Network Sites: A Definition.

• The above introduction was only possible because “you” the audience have an implicit understanding and experience of what SNs are. You live in a time when SNs are part of the daily experience and language, but how we got there ?

Evolution of Media (industry) is intrinsicallydependant on technology evolution.

• Early 16th century : First news papers (UK)• Early 1910 : Newspapers + radio.• Mid 1930 : Newspapers + radio +Television.

- -Circa 1969 : (Arpanet, UCLA) Internet. (HTML)

• Circa 1980 : Newspapers + radio + Television + Internet {first Sns}.

Effects on the media ?

• What makes social network sites unique is not that they allow individuals to meet strangers, but rather that they enable users to articulate and make visible their social networks

• This opens up a whole new window of opportunities for information distribution and marketing

• Seemingly creates the need for specialised tools and platforms of delivery (software).

Conclusions

• SNSs have permeated most aspects of contemporary life, and have a symbiotic relationship with the media (Industry).

• Although not a “medium” in itself SNSs have puzzled and challenged stablished ideas about information distribution & marketing

• The media (industry) coherently, has adapted its own processes of evolution to fit this new framework.
