Programs for Managing Business Across Cultures

JAIMS addresses the critical issues ofmanaging business across cultures through itscomprehensive academic programs—theICMP and two MBA programs, the Japan-focused Master of Business Administration(JEMBA) and the China-focused Master ofBusiness Administration (CHEMBA). The 15-month MBA programs are offered inconjunction with the University of Hawaii atManoa College of Business.

Intensive Business Communication

All academic programs at JAIMSincorporate intensive business communicationcourses covering language and culture. Thiscommunication component—which focuseson English for ICMP—is aimed at developingin-country survival skills and languageproficiency within a business context. Bothverbal and non-verbal communication skillsare addressed, together with Western businessprotocol and social etiquette.

Hawaii—Paradise for Intercultural Education

JAIMS participants agree that Hawaiiprovides a unique experience for enhancingAsia-Pacific cultural sensitivity. Theinternational mix of JAIMS participants adds awide variety of global perspectives to the studyof intercultural management. Each year,Fujitsu Ltd. supports the diversity of theprogram and demonstrates its commitment tointernational business education by awardinggenerous scholarships to qualified participantsfrom the Asia-Pacific region.

Faculty

Programs and coursework at JAIMS aretaught by JAIMS core instructors; businessexecutives from well-known academic, researchand nonprofit institutes as well as privateorganizations; and affiliate faculty fro minstitutions such as the University of Hawaii atManoa, Hawaii Pacific University, ChaminadeUniversity of Honolulu, and the East-WestCenter.

Facilities and Environment

JAIMS is located in the Hawaii Kaidistrict of Honolulu, Hawaii on the island ofOahu. It is an approximate 20-minute drivefrom the downtown business area or Waikiki.Hawaii was selected as the campus site forJAIMS because of its crossroads-of-the-Pacificconvenience and for its multiethniccommunity linking East and West.

The JAIMS campus includes a two-story,air-conditioned building that blendsharmoniously with its six-acre environment.Ample free parking is available on campus,and bus stops are located nearby.

On-campus facilities include an executiveseminar room, classrooms and conferencerooms, computer and multimedia labs withpersonal computers for participant use, and a student lounge.

JAIMS makes extensive use of informationtechnology. The computer lab, equipped withmultimedia PCs, provides access to wordprocessing, spreadsheet, database, presentationsoftware and the Internet. The Internet can beaccessed from JAIMS classrooms through thelocal area network/wireless network and can bedisplayed on large-screen computer videoprojectors. Students may also access the

Internet from their own laptop computersthrough JAIMS’ campus-wide wirelessnetwork. All participants are given e-mailaddresses for use while at JAIMS.

The Takuma Yamamoto e-Learning Centeris a technology-based information services centerfor participants, faculty, staff, and alumni. T h efacilities and meeting spaces supportc o l l a b o r a t i ve group study and enable the use ofe l e c t ronic, multimedia, and library re s o u rc e s .The Center’s re s o u rces include over 2,500books, and other printed and audio-visualmaterials; online business-related databases; andinternship and re s e a rch re p o rts of former JAIMSstudents.

Language of Instruction

English is the language of instruction forICMP, and participants are required to expressthemselves in English while at JAIMS.Students should be prepared to do extensivereading assignments and research in Englishand to engage in class discussions andactivities. JAIMS also encourages participantsto find outside activities where English is usedand to socialize with people who speak Englishto further enhance their communication andlanguage learning.

he ICMP is a four-month curriculum thatenhances English communication skills, buildsconfidence in intercultural business situations,and sharpens global management knowledge.The curriculum consists of three groups ofcourses:• Foundation Lectures/Workshops—A group

of noncredit, required courses taught duringthe first week of ICMP. These coursesprepare you for the credited curriculum.

• Required Courses—Four interculturalcommunication and management courses,consisting of a total of 8 credits. All of thesecourses are required.

• Elective Courses—A group of courses fromwhich you must complete a minimum of 16 credits. You may choose the courses youwish to take.

To fulfill the requirements of ICMP andreceive a Graduate Diploma, all participantsmust complete a minimum of 24 total creditswith a cumulative grade point average of 3.0.Courses are listed below.

Foundation Lectures/Workshops(Noncredit)

Fundamentals of WritingThis course helps participants develop strategyand style in basic written communication,with a focus on developing a resume.

Computer Skills for the WorkplaceA series of workshops offering hands-onlessons in MS Word, Excel, and PowerPoint atthe beginner and intermediate levels.

IM 521R Intercultural Negotiation (2 credits)This course focuses on deal-making and disputeresolution in the context of international busi-ness transactions with an emphasis on cro s s - c u l-tural conflicts. Students study and practicenegotiation, mediation ("conciliation"), andarbitration through role play and simulation.

IM 523R Developing Distinctive andEffective Leadership (2 credits)In order to assist students in developing self-leadership that is both distinctive and effective,this course provides a vehicle for them tounderstand their own style of leadership andlearn how to manage those who have stylesdifferent from themselves. Students are provid-ed with opportunities to learn about the basicleadership process in order for them to discov-er ways to contribute to synergistic team work.Class sessions will include lecture, discussionof classical and contemporary leadership casestudies, as well as simulations and other expe-riential activities.

IM 524R International Business (3 credits)This course provides participants an interac-tive, hands-on, and practical experience inte-grating all disciplines of international business:corporate strategy, business research, legal, reg-ulatory, marketing, sales, operations, finance,accounting, human resources, and negotiation.Class sessions will include lectures, discussionsof current business articles and/or case analy-ses. Lectures will be based primarily on amodel where a foreign firm is planning anexpansion into the U. S. market. Current busi-ness articles and case analyses will involve theglobal market place. A team project to developa business plan incorporating all disciplines ofinternational business will culminate thiscourse.

MGT 513R Making Effective BusinessPresentations (2 credits)The purpose of this course is to learn how toconceptualize, develop, and deliver effectivebusiness presentations to an internationalaudience in English. Students will learn theessential elements of effective presentationsand have the opportunity to present in class.Appropriate use of visual aids and PowerPointwill be encouraged.

MGT 515R Issues for Global Managers (1 credit)This course includes a series of lectures, sitevisits and team-building activities that assiststudents in appreciating several key areas ofdoing business in the U.S.: corporate citizen-ship, cultural sensitivity, entrepreneurship,interpersonal skills, and preparing for theinternational assignment.

BC 500 Communication for GlobalBusiness (2 credits)This course helps students in developing aninfluential communication style and applyingcommunication skills in practical business sit-uations. Discussions and activities simulatecommunication tasks encountered in U.S.business relations.

BC 501 Written Business Communication (2 credits) This intensive course is designed to equip stu-dents with the basic knowledge and skills theywill need to produce effective written corre s p o n-dence in an American business setting.

MGT 530 Navigating the U.S. Legal System (2 credits)This course examines the U.S. legal systemand regulatory environment. Participantsstudy the policies behind U.S. law and also thelaw on foreign corporations and/or their sub-sidiaries operating within the United States.

MGT 532 Financial Accounting forManagers (2 credits) This course introduces financial accountingand methods used to record and report finan-cial information to external decision makers,including how certain accounting data areused in management planning and controlprocesses.

MGT 539 Nuts & Bolts ofEntrepreneurship (2 credits)This course is designed to instruct students onhow to formulate, plan, and implement a newventure. Students will learn by example as theyencounter case studies and entrepreneur pro-files throughout the course that illustrates suc-cessful and not-so-successful ventures.

MGT 541 Global Investment Management (2 credits) This course will cover the business of inve s t m e n tbanking and the money management industry.Analysis of financial statements of various com-panies will be studied. Equity re s e a rch willinclude fundamental, technical and quantitativetechniques. In vestment concepts are taught usingg roup exe rcises in class.

MGT 542 Global Marketing (2 credits)Global Marketing Management is designed toprovide students a fundamental understandingof marketing in a multicultural, multinationalenvironment. Participants will gain experiencein analyzing marketing opportunities in a

ICMP showed me quitedifferent views ofbusiness that I hadnever considered. Theinternship especiallywas a wonderfulopportunity in that I could observe realbusiness in the UnitedStates. The course includes marketing caseanalysis to hone critical thinking skills and amodule on brand strategy. The team-basedmarketing project will provide students theopportunity apply learning in a practical,hands-on learning environment.

MGT 543 Project Management (2 credits) This introductory project management courseis designed to acquaint students with practicaltechniques for successfully completing projectswithin time, budget, and scope/qualityconstraints. Students learn a step-by-stepmodel to initiate, plan, execute, control, andclose a project. Proven project managementtechniques will be applied to an in-classproject through which participants will learnto identify appropriate control steps. Inaddition, techniques for gathering, analyzing,and communicating essential informationspecific for each process area will be covered.Guest speakers from the business communitywill be invited to share their experiencesand expertise in project managementthroughout the course.

MGT 544 Information Systems inOrganizations (2 credits) This course will improve the participant’sunderstanding of how organizations developand use information technology in businessprocesses. Participants will gain insight intothe “real world” of management informationsystems (MIS) professionals through use ofcase studies, readings and discussions on MIStopics, in order to understand the role of MISprofessionals and the IS department inmodern business organizations. The course isprimarily a seminar and will include a varietyof learning formats, including lectures, studentpresentations, discussions and online learning.

Study Options

ollowing the ICMP coursework, participantsin good academic standing may enroll in atwo-month study option. JAIMS offers theBusiness Exchange Program and the ReimsInternational Management Programme.

Business Exchange Program

JAIMS provides an invaluable and uniqueexperience with the Business ExchangeProgram (BEP), an optional two-month(eight-week) internship that gives ICMP participants an opportunity to experienceAmerican business first-hand. BEP companiesare located throughout the U.S. mainland and Hawaii. JAIMS’ network of BEP partnersincludes for-profit business and nonprofitorganizations, large and small businesses, andboth American-owned and foreign-ownedcompanies (see listing on page 9).

In setting up the internship, JAIMS takesinto consideration the ICMP participant’sareas of interest, background, and company orcareer objectives. Before being accepted by theBEP company, participants are interviewed,either by phone or in person.

The BEP company’s responsibility is toprovide the participant with opportunities for experiencing real-world operations of theorganization. The internship involves activitiesboth in and out of the company, and includessupervised duties and independent study.Participants are not paid for their work.

Participants are also encouraged to involvet h e m s e l ves in daily American life outside theoffice. Whether situated in Silicon Valley or am e t ropolis like New Yo rk City, opport u n i t i e s

abound for experiencing the Americanway of life. Keeping an open mindand remaining flexible are keys toe n j oying life in an unfamiliar city.

Homestays may only be availablein certain internship cities and arearranged by JAIMS. Participantswishing to live independently shouldbe prepared to search for their ownhousing.

After completing the internship,the participant must present an oral report of the internship to faculty,staff, and fellow classmates at JAIMS in Honolulu and submit a final written report.

The $2,000 tuition for the BEPdoes not include travel, living or otherexpenses incurred by the participantduring the internship period.

Reims International ManagementProgramme

The Reims Management School, inReims, France, offers the InternationalManagement Programme (IMP) to enableparticipants to have a cross-cultural learningexperience on an international campus withMBA-level students and professors fromdifferent countries. Reims Management Schoolis an EQUIS business school, the accre d i t a t i o ns t a n d a rd awarded to only the top businessschools in Eu rope. Reims has approx i m a t e l y1,500 undergraduates and 500 MBA-leve lstudents, and has exchanges and alliances withm o re than 30 universities and institutionsa round the world.

The goal of the IMP is to helpparticipants better understand internationalbusiness and the European perspective on

global economy and to make them aware ofthe impact of cultural differences onmanagement techniques and practices.Participants spend two months in France,taking courses that focus on businesso p p o rtunities and challenges in theinternational environment (with an emphasison Europe) and international managementissues. Courses are taught in English byinstructors drawn from educational institutesthroughout the world. Field trips to Frenchbusinesses and cultural sites are an integralpart of the program.

The Reims IMP is only offered in the fall term. The $2,500 tuition does not covertravel, living, or other expenses. ReimsManagement School will assist withaccommodations on- or off-campus.

Housing

JAIMS does not have dormitory facilities.Howe ve r, to assist you in locating suitablehousing, the academic services depart m e n tmaintains a housing database of rooms for re n tin houses and apartments. Fully furnishedrentals range in price from approximately $400to $1,500 or more per month, depending onwhether participants live in a private apart m e n t ,s h a re an apartment, or rent a room in a house oran apart m e n t .

Some participants prefer to live near theactivity surrounding Waikiki and the Un i ve r s i t yof Hawaii at Manoa. Howe ve r, renting a ro o min a house or an apartment in Hawaii Kai nearJAIMS is typically less expensive and is pre f e r re dby most participants. Shopping, banking, andother services are also conveniently located inHawaii Kai.

Participants may rent from a host familyor a landlord. A host family usually has dailyinteraction with the participant and mayinclude him or her in family activities. Alandlord usually has very little interaction withthe participant.

Pre-Housing Arrangement

JAIMS conducts a housing orientation on the first day of ICMP. JAIMS recommendsmaking housing arrangements after arriving inHawaii so that you may see the different areasin which to live on Oahu.

Transportation

There are several options fortransportation on Oahu, including driving acar, riding the bus or a bicycle, or walking.Participants who opt to have a car usually rentor purchase a vehicle. International studentsmust have a current, valid drive r’s license fro mtheir home country and an internationaldriver’s license in order to drive in Hawaii.Automobile insurance is mandatory by law inHawaii for both rented and purchased cars. Torent from a major car rental company in theUnited States, you must be at least 25 yearsold, a licensed drive r, and the owner of a majorc re d i t card. Rates vary depending on thelength of rental and the type of car rented.

The city bus conveniently stops nearJAIMS, with service to Waikiki, the dow n t ow narea, and around the island. A bus pass, withunlimited rides, is available throughout Oahufor approximately $40 per month.

Participants who live in Hawaii Kai usually walk or ride a bicycle to JAIMS and to surrounding shopping facilities.

Honolulu is a cosmopolitan city, influenced by many cultures.

Intercultural Opportunities and Activities

JAIMS encourages all participants toengage in professional and community-oriented activities that will enhanceintercultural learning. Local company visits areorganized throughout the program so that youmay gain a practical understanding ofAmerican management theories throughdiscussions with company representatives.

Extracurricular events, such as internationalnight and dessert socials, are offered to enhancepersonal relationships among the JAIMS faculty,staff, other program participants, and the community.

Recreation and sports activities, such asscuba diving, snorkeling, hula, tennis, hiking,golf, swimming, gym facilities/recreation areas,and a movie theater, are located within minutes of JAIMS. Volleyball, table tennis,and basketball equipment are available for useat JAIMS, while a piano is located in thecafetorium and a television is in the studentlounge. The Honolulu Marathon, an annualevent, takes place in December. In the past, asmall group of ICMP participants has oftentrained for and run the marathon together.

Thanks to helpfulassistance fromJAIMS, I had a greatopportunity to learnthe American way ofmanaging business. I enjoyed my internship in the corporate communicationsd e p a rtment of FujitsuAmerica in San Jose,California. It washard work but a lotof fun.

Admission

There are three key requirements for admiss i o nto the In t e rcultural Management Pro g r a m :• A bachelor’s degree (or an equivalent

four-year baccalaureate degree) in any discipline from a regionally or nationallyaccredited institution

• A minimum of three years of full-time workexperience

• A minimum TOEFL (Test of English as a Foreign Language) score of 500 (173 forthe computer-based test), TOEIC (Test ofEnglish for International Communication)score of 600, or IELTS (International EnglishLanguage System) overall band test result of5.00 or higher

An applicant who does not meet these minimum requirements may be considered for admission on a case-by-case basis.

Application Process

All ICMP applicants must submit acompleted ICMP application to JAIMS or theJAIMS Japan Office (JJO) by the applicationdeadline, together with a student copy orphotocopy of a TOEFL, TOEIC, or IELTSs c o re re p o rt from a test taken within two ye a r sof the date of the application. A score from aTOEIC administered by JJO is also acceptable.Applicants who hold a bachelor’s or adva n c e dd e g ree that includes at least two years of full-time coursew o rk within the last five years fro man accredited college or university in the Un i t e dStates, Australia, United Kingdom, or NewZealand, or from a university in Canada, Africa,or Si n g a p o re where English is the language ofi n s t ruction are exempt from taking the TO E F L ,TOEIC, or IELTS. CMP students must complete a minimum of 24 credit hours of coursework to fulfill program requirements successfully. One credithour is equivalent to eight class sessions of 80 minutes each. The credit hours aredetermined by the amount of lecture,laboratory, and field experience hours for eachcourse. Thorough preparation of assignmentsand enthusiastic participation during classactivities are required.

Graduate Diploma

JAIMS awards a Graduate Diploma whenyou successfully fulfill the requirements of theICMP with a minimum cumulative GPA of3.0 within four consecutive months ( f o rp a rticipants not enrolled in a study option) orsix consecutive months (for participantsenrolled in a study option). An exception tothis regulation may be granted by the vicepresident for academic affairs.

Scholarships

The Fujitsu Asia Pacific ScholarshipProgram, established by Fujitsu Ltd., coversprogram fees and a stipend for the four-monthICMP. The scholarship is available to citizensof Cambodia, China, India, Indonesia, Laos,Malaysia, Myanmar, the Philippines, SriLanka, Thailand, and Vietnam. Specialconditions apply to China, Myanmar, andVietnam. The Foundation for InternationalInformation Processing Education (FINIPED)Scholarship, valued at up to 350,000 yen, is awarded to qualified Japanese citizens. A Graduate Diploma with Hi g h e s tDistinction is awarded to students whocomplete the ICMP with a cumulative GPA of4.0; With High Distinction is awarded to those

with a cumulative GPA of 3.8 or higher.The President’s Business Plan Award is

presented to the winner of the ICMP BusinessPlan Competition.

The Francis A. Wong Award for Leadershipis presented by JAIMS to the ICMP student atthe end of the program on the basis of“promising entrepreneurial skills as evidencedby demonstrative initiative and leadershipqualities during his/her attendance as astudent of JAIMS.” The recipient receives acash award, and his/her name is engraved on aplaque displayed at JAIMS.

The Students’ Choice Award is presented tothe student selected by classmates based oncriteria determined by class members. T h ere c i p i e n t’s name is engraved on a perpetualtrophy, and the recipient gives the ICMP classspeech during the Closing Ceremony.
