My Fingerpaint Masterpiece by Sherrill Cannon

Based on the book My Fingerpaint Masterpiece, by Sherrill Cannon (U.S.A.), and in a collaborative translation project with theIblibrary.com, Year 3 students of SIS Swiss International School, Brasilia created their own fingerpaint masterpieces. Similar to the story, students decided to include hidden objects in their works of art in order to illustrate the idea of perspective.

Next, students guessed the hidden objects in each other´s paintings (Yellow Post-its) before the artist revealed his/her perspective (Orange Post-its) to connect to our Line of Inquiry of how a picture can show different views within a story or a tale. Students then explored our Line of Inquiry of different ways of expressing ourselves by writing creative stories based on their fingerpaintmasterpieces.

• Initially, the Students identified the rhyming style/pattern in the story while the teacher clarified/illustrated vocabulary and modeled the pacing of the rhyme scheme, followed by class discussion on perspective. (Was it a boy or girl artist/narrator?)

• Then the students created Rhyming Words Flashcards from the words in the book (partner / group work).

• Along with this, students created individual fingerpaintings in an open-ended task to express themselves based on a collaboratively identified rubric, consisting of having to fill the large white page with colours and include hidden objects like the main character did in My FingerpaintMasterpiece. Students illustrated their differences in perspective by attempting to identify the objects placed in each other's fingerpaintings on a Post-it note before the artist revealed the hidden objects.

• Finally, students created a title and wrote a creative story about their own fingerpaintmasterpiece based on the objects they decided to hide in their artwork.

• Year 3 students are scheduled to translate the text next week, with alterations to the rhyme scheme in order to adjust to the Portuguese language. They are also going to participate in Interactive Author/ Student Dual Language Experience. Students will compose one group email in English and Portuguese asking the author questions about her process of creating the book, context within the book and any other questions they may have.
