OMEGA-3 FATS AND FISH OIL

Omega-3 fats are healthy fats with many health benefits. They may help lower your risk of heart disease, and research is being done to see if they play a role in lowering the risk of cancer, dementia, Alzheimer’s disease and depression.

Our bodies cannot make these fats, yet we need them to survive. You can get omega-3 fats by eating at least two Food Guide servings of fish per week and adding foods rich in omega-3s. Salmon is one of the best sources of heart-healthy omega-3s. A 3.5 ounce serving of wild coho salmon contains 1050 mg of the two most important omega-3s (DHA and EPA)

F ish o i l supp lements are an alternative to food sources of omega-3s. The research on the benefits of supplements, however, remains murky. Recent study results are less positive than earlier studies. For example, in a September 2012 meta-analysis and review published in the Journal of the American Medical Association (JAMA), the authors pooled results from 20 studies and found no statistically significant association between all deaths, cardiac-related deaths, sudden deaths, heart attacks and strokes among people taking omega-3 polyunsaturated fatty acid supplements derived from fish oils.

Most researchers agree that eating oily fish is a better way to get your omega-3s, and fish has the added advantage of replacing less desirable high saturated fat entree choices like hamburgers or quiche, and whole foods often have other nutrients that may also be good for your health.

Speak to your health care professional before starting an omega-3 supplement. They can recommend the amount and type of supplement appropriate for you.

For a list of foods containing omega-3s, you can download a Dietitians of Canada’s “Food Sources of Omega-3 Fats” fact sheet at www.dietitians.ca under “Nutrition Resources.”
