THE HUMAN HEARTLubb-Dubb
THE HEART
Made of muscle tissue Heart wall is made of cardiac muscle Contains pacemaker Contains nervous tissue responding to stimuli
(leading to increase or decrease in heart rate) Protection of heart
Ribs, sternum, spine Contains 4 chambers, separated by septum
Right and left atria Receiving chambers
Right and left ventricles Delivery chambers
DOUBLE CIRCULATION SYSTEM
THE HUMAN HEART
PATH OF BLOOD THROUGH THE HUMAN HEART
There are three main systems or “cycles” that involve getting blood through the heart to the other parts of the body and back:
1. Pulmonary System Supplies the lungs (poumon = lungs in French) Low-pressure system
2. Systemic System Supplies the body High-pressure system
3. Cardiac System Supplies the heart
PULMONARY SYSTEM
1. PULMONARY SYSTEM (supplies lungs) R atrium R ventricle pulmonary arteries* (*only arteries that carry
deoxygenated blood) arteries, arterioles capillaries venules, veins pulmonary veins* (*only veins that carry O2-rich
blood) L atrium
deoxygenated bloodoxygenated blood
SYSTEMIC SYSTEM
2. SYSTEMIC SYSTEM (suppies body cells, except heart) L atrium L ventricle aorta arteries, arterioles capillaries venules, veins superior & inferior vena cava R atrium
NOTE: BLOOD IS NOW BACK TO WHERE IT “STARTED”.
deoxygenated bloodoxygenated blood
CARDIAC SYSTEM
3. CARDIAC SYSTEM (supplies heart) L ventricle aorta coronary arteries coronary/cardiac veins R atrium
deoxygenated bloodoxygenated blood
CARDIAC SYSTEM – CORONARY ARTERIES
PRACTICE!! Miss S. will explain everything.
THE SOUNDS OF THE HEART Anyone remember what Bill Nye said the
sounds the heart makes are??1. “LUBB”
Louder, longer sound Made by the closing of AV valves and
opening of semi-lunar valves Occurs at the beginning of systole
Ventricles contract, forcing blood out
2. “DUBB” Quieter, shorter sound Made by closing of semi-lunar valves and
opening of AV valves Occurs at the beginning of diastole
Ventricles relax, allowing blood in
INVESTIGATION
You will be put into partners to complete the investigation activity on heart sounds.
Answer all questions on the paper provided.
When we are finished (in about 10 minutes), we will take up the answers together.
Miss S. will collect the papers and record the marks.
HAND BACK DAY Quizzes
Soil Erosion Assignments
Marks Showing
Test Anatomy June 14th or June 15th (Monday or Tuesday) Review will be the day before When it is will depend on how long the dissection
takes
