The Holy Family of Jesus, Mary, and Joseph
"Simeon blessed them and said to Mary his mother, 'And you yourself a sword will pierce.'" This old man in the Temple, a man filled with the
Holy Spirit, uttered these ominous, prophetic words. Right in the midst of a religious celebration that could be considered a kind of parallel to
Christian baptism, Simeon started talking about suffering. Although this might have put a damper on the joy of the occasion, it was nonetheless a
precious moment. God was speaking through the mouth of the Spirit-filled Simeon and actually doing Mary a great service. God was helping Mary to prepare herself for what lay ahead. And the truth was, the road
in front of her family was destined to be marked by the cross. Our families also bear this mark. Although in a different way from
Mary, we all have our crosses to deal with. Whether it be the sickness or death of a loved one, conflicts among siblings or spouses, or unexpected challenges like infertility or a lost job, no family is without its share of
trouble. As we navigate these difficulties, we would do well to remember Simeon's words to Mary: suffering is going to happen,
sometimes very painful, heart-piercing suffering. But instead of being shocked or angry at God, we can call to mind the fact that this is part of life in a fallen world. We can also remind ourselves that although Mary
suffered when her son suffered, she also rejoiced when he rejoiced. Ultimately, every cross she bore as his mother was trumped in the end by the victory of the Resurrection. We share in this triumph as well.
After all, our families are in the loving care of a heavenly Father. We are not just the children of our parents; we are also the children of God.

St. Vincent de Paul Society As we continue to celebrate the birth of Our Lord, we count the
generosity of our parishioners as one of our many blessings. Your assistance throughout the year is most appreciated. Thanks to you, we are able to extend extra help to those in need in our
community. During this joyous holiday season as you spend time with loves ones and reconnect with friends, we hope that you
remember those less fortunate and keep us in mind the next time you shop for a special meal or enjoy the warmth of your home.
There is a constant need of those less fortunate and we are always thankful of any donations that our ministry can channel to those
who need it most. Thank you. God bless you. And may your New Year be filled with health and happiness!

PLEASE REMEMBER THEM Please pray for the priests and deacons who have served the Diocese of Gary so faithfully and whose anniversaries of death are this week:

TO SO MANY PEOPLE Christmas is a time of giving. At Christmas time, many people in our parish give so completely of themselves to make sure that our Christmas Masses are wonderful celebrations. In no particular order, I would like to thank the following people:
Fr. Ted and our deacons for their continued help and presence among the parish community.
The members of the Art and Environment Committee for decorating the church so beautifully.
All the parishioners who donated so generously so that we could purchase our flowers and other decorations.
Everyone involved in our Music Ministry for helping us to worship God so joyfully: our musicians, our choirs, our cantors, and our bell choirs.
All those involved in our liturgies: MCs, servers, lectors, Eucharistic Ministers, ushers, and greeters.
All of you who came to worship as one faith community. Once again, to all above and to anyone I may have forgotten to mention: Thank You from the bottom of my heart! We have celebrated Jesus’ birth. We are also mindful that He will come again. As we worship together, may we grow closer to one another, united by our Lord and God. As January 1st approaches, I pray that the New Year be happy and healthy for you and your family and friends.
BE A HOLY FAMILY
Put on, as God's chosen ones, holy and beloved, heartfelt compassion, kindness, humility, gentleness, and patience, bearing with one another and forgiving one another, if one has a grievance against another; as the Lord has forgiven you, so must you also do. And over all these put on love, that is, the bond of perfection. And let the peace of Christ control your hearts, the peace into which you were also called in one body. And be thankful. (Col 3:12-15)
Today is the Feast of the Holy Family. This is a feast in the Church that many people approach with trepidation. The primary reason, most likely, is because their families may not be sources of love and peace. Their families may be torn by strife. They may be fragmented or broken apart. Because of that, "Family" can be very stressful for some people.
It was for the Holy Family, too. Think about it. While engaged, Mary told Joseph she was pregnant with a child that was not Joseph's. That would be incredibly stressful.
It was getting close to the days that Jesus would be born and they had to be uprooted and proceed to Bethlehem for a census. The travel was rough, especially for a woman close to term. Bandits were all over the roads. There was no room in the inn. More stress.
After Jesus was born and after the Magi came to see Him, they were told to flee their own native land and go to Egypt because a king wanted to kill their child. Even more stress.
Watching Jesus grow up and become a man, Mary heard talk about how others wanted to kill Jesus. Ultimately, she stood at the foot of His cross. Off-the-charts stress.
Yet, in all of this, faith in God kept the family intact. Their belief that they were doing God's will and that they were entrusted to one another helped them get through awful times.
Our families are a lot like the Holy Family after all. We endure incredible stress at times. Yet God has entrusted us to one another and asked us to rely on Him for all that we need. With God's love, we can overcome anything that comes our way.
Live in holiness today. I know you can do it. So does God!
FAITH ACTION: If you live with your family, try to do something together today to celebrate your bond. If you live alone, prayerfully call to mind each member of your family and ask God to bless each one abundantly.
ON THE LIGHTER SIDE A Jesuit, a Dominican, and a Franciscan were walking along an old road, debating the greatness of their orders. Suddenly, an apparition of the Holy Family appeared in front of them, with Jesus in a manger and Mary and Joseph praying over him. The Franciscan fell on his face, overcome with awe at the sight of God born in such poverty. The Dominican fell to his knees, adoring the beautiful reflection of the Trinity and the Holy Family. The Jesuit walked up to Joseph, put his arm around his shoulder, and said, “So, have you thought about where to send the boy to school?”

Church's most significant leaders in the persons of Peter and Paul during the 10 week study.

You Did It For Me Katrina* was 14 when she was sold into slavery and abused by her captors. She escaped, but was arrested for petty larceny as
she tried to make her way to relatives. Her local Catholic Charities provided counseling, medical assistance, and legal
representation to help Katrina assimilate and find her extended family. “Watching Katrina blossom from a shattered little girl to a strong and confident young woman has enriched my life,” said
her case manager. “Her story is one that shows the power of hope.” Last year, the Catholic Charities network helped over
375,000 immigrants and refugees along their path to a better life. To learn more, please visit www.CatholicCharitiesUSA.org

Each year, the students of St. Thomas More School begin the holiday season with the annual
Mass of the Toys. Children generously donate toys to be sent
to the prison in Michigan City, IN for the
children of the incarcerated. But the generosity of our school families does not end there. New toys and personal items are again collected for area families during
the St. Vincent De Paul Toy Drive and distributed by
members of our parish SVDP. In addition, seventh and eighth grade students have been busy collected much needed baby items to be sent to Catholic
Family Services. Indeed, we have been blessed
with caring children and families who consistently give of their
gifts to aid and support others in our local and global community.
And this is just the beginning of a year-long “giving spree.”
Thank you everyone. We hope that your New Year is
blessed with health and happiness!

STM Travelers Club It is amazing how fast time passes and it is hard to realize that we have now planned one-day trips for seven years! Our trips have been successful because of the enthusiastic response from those who travel with us. Our parishioners are a cheerful & fun-loving
group and we thank everyone for their support and loyalty. Actually, we ended up having as much fun as our travelers did!
This past year we went to the popular Flower Show at The Navy Pier, had tours of St. Stanislaus Kostka Church, The National Shrine of Mother Cabrini in Chicago, toured the spectacular
Sanfilippo Collection of antique music machines in Barrington, IL, walked the historic streets of Cedarburg, WI and ended up the year with a fantastic Christmas Musical in a theatre-in-the-
round with a delicious dinner in Fort Atkinson, WI. What a terrific schedule it was! Your excitement has encouraged
us to begin our plans for more exciting trips for 2015. Note: We do not plan trips for the months of January,
February and March due to uncertain and often severe winter weather/travel conditions.
We have some exciting ideas for next year, so look for information in the Sunday bulletins next March, when we will
announce our first trip for April 2015. Have a happy and healthy New Year and may God bless all our parishioners and their families with inner peace and happiness.
Our appreciation and loving thoughts, Lois, Pat and Mary
Vocations Committee It is said that you cannot keep the faith unless you share it
enthusiastically with others, particularly the weakest. That would be called evangelizing. Try it, give it your all!
You’ll remember it forever as the best thing you ever did, a religious vocation may come from it!
