A Reading from the Book of Sirach

God sets a father in honor over his children; a mother’s authority he confirms over her sons.

Whoever honors his father atones for sins, and preserves himself from them. When he

prays, he is heard; he stores up riches who reveres his mother. Whoever honors his father is

gladdened by children, and, when he prays, is heard. Whoever reveres his father will live a

long life; he who obeys his father brings comfort to his mother. My son, take care of your

father when he is old; grieve him not as long as he lives. Even if his mind fail, be

considerate of him; revile him not all the days of his life; kindness to a father will not be

forgotten, firmly planted against the debt of your sins —a house raised in justice to you.

Lector: The Word of the Lord. People: Thanks be to God.

A Reading from the Letter of St. Paul to the Colossians

Brothers and sisters: Put on, as God’s chosen ones, holy and beloved, heartfelt compassion,kindness, humility, gentleness, and patience, bearing with one another and forgiving one another, ifone has a grievance against another; as the Lord has forgiven you, so must you also do. And overall these put on love, that is, the bond of perfection. And let the peace of Christ control your hearts,the peace into which you were also called in one body. And be thankful. Let the word of Christdwell in you richly, as in all wisdom you teach and admonish one another, singing psalms, hymns,and spiritual songs with gratitude in your hearts to God. And whatever you do, in word or in deed,do everything in the name of the Lord Jesus, giving thanks to God the Father through him. Wives,be subordinate to your husbands, as is proper in the Lord. Husbands, love your wives, and avoidany bitterness toward them. Children, obey your parents in everything, for this is pleasing to theLord. Fathers, do not provoke your children, so they may not become discouraged.

Lector: The Word of the Lord. People: Thanks be to God.

A Reading from the Holy Gospel according to Saint Luke(The shorter Vatican approved version.)

People: Glory to you, O Lord.

When the days were completed for their purification

according to the law of Moses, they took him up to Jerusalem

to present him to the Lord.

When they had fulfilled all the prescriptions

of the law of the Lord,

they returned to Galilee,

to their own town of Nazareth.

The child grew and became strong, filled with wisdom;

and the favor of God was upon him. Priest: The Gospel of the Lord. People: Praise to You, Lord Jesus Christ.

The Responsorial: Blessed are those who fear the Lord and walk in his ways. (PS 128: 1-2, 3, 4-5)

Lector: Alleluia People Only: Alleluia (Stand)

Lector Only: Let the peace of Christ control your hearts; let the word of Christ dwell in you richly.People Only: Alleluia

Creed

I believe in one God, the Father almighty,

Maker of heaven and earth,

of all things visible and invisible.

I believe in one Lord Jesus Christ,

the Only Begotten Son of God,

born of the Father before all ages.

God from God, Light from Light,

true God from true God,

begotten, not made,

consubstantial with the Father;

through Him all things were made.

For us men and for our salvation He came down

from heaven,At the words that follow, up to and including and became man, all bow

and by the Holy Spirit was Incarnate of the

Virgin Mary and became Man.

For our sake He was crucified under Pontius

Pilate,

He suffered death and was buried,

and rose again on the third day

in accordance with the Scriptures.

He ascended into heaven

and is seated at the right hand of the Father.

He will come again in glory to judge the living

and the dead and his kingdom will have no end.

I believe in the Holy Spirit, the Lord, the Giver of

Life, who proceeds from the Father and the Son,

Who with the Father and the Son is adored and

glorified, who has spoken through the prophets.

I believe in one, holy, catholic and apostolic

Church.

I confess one Baptism for the forgiveness of sins

and I look forward to the resurrection of the

dead and the life of the world to come.

Amen.

O come, Thou Day-spring, come and cheerOur spirits by Thine advent here;Disperse the gloomy clouds of night,And death’s dark shadows put to flight.

Entrance

I Heard the Voice of Jesus

I heard the voice of Jesus say, “Come unto Me and rest;

Lay down, thou weary one, lay down Thy head upon My breast.”

I came to Jesus as I was, weary and worn and sad;

I found in Him a resting place, and He has made me glad.

I heard the voice of Jesus say, “Behold, I freely give

The living water; thirsty one, stoop down, and drink, and live.”

I came to Jesus, and I drank of that life giving stream;

My thirst was quenched, my soul revived, and now I live in Him.

I heard the voice of Jesus say, “I am this dark world’s Light;

Look unto Me, thy morn shall rise, and all thy day be bright.”

I looked to Jesus, and I found in Him my Star, my Sun;

And in that light of life I’ll walk, till traveling days are done.

Offertory

Holy God, We Praise Thy Name

Holy God, we praise Thy Name;

Lord of all, we bow before Thee!

All on earth Thy scepter claim,

All in Heaven above adore Thee;

Infinite Thy vast domain,

Everlasting is Thy reign.

Hark! the loud celestial hymn

Angel choirs above are raising,

Cherubim and seraphim,

In unceasing chorus praising;

Fill the heavens with sweet accord:

Holy, holy, holy, Lord.

Holy Father, Holy Son,

Holy Spirit, Three we name Thee;

While in essence only One,

Undivided God we claim Thee;

And adoring bend the knee,

While we own the mystery.

Next Sunday’s GospelThe Epiphany of the Lord

The text of next Sunday’s Gospel is provided here, so that,

during the week, we can think and pray about it, and be ready to

receive it into our minds and hearts when it is proclaimed at mass.

Matthew 2: 1-12

When Jesus was born in Bethlehem of Judea, in the days of King Herod, behold, magi from the east arrived in Jerusalem, saying,"Where is the newborn king of the Jews? We saw his star at its rising and have come to do him homage." When King Herodheard this, he was greatly troubled, and all Jerusalem with him.Assembling all the chief priests and the scribes of the people, Heinquired of them where the Christ was to be born. They said to him, "In Bethlehem of Judea, for thus it has been written throughthe prophet: And you, Bethlehem, land of Judah, are by no means least among the rulers of Judah; since from you shall come aruler, who is to shepherd my people Israel." Then Herod called the magi secretly and ascertained from them the time of the star'sappearance. He sent them to Bethlehem and said, "Go and search diligently for the child. When you have found him, bring meword, that I too may go and do him homage."After their audience with the king they set out. And behold, the star that they hadseen at its rising preceded them, until it came and stopped over the place where the child was. They were overjoyed at seeing thestar, and on entering the house they saw the child with Mary his mother. They prostrated themselves and did him homage. Thenthey opened their treasures and offered him gifts of gold, frankincense, and myrrh. And having been warned in a dream not toreturn to Herod, they departed for their country by another way.

Book DescriptionModern biblical scholars tend to dismiss the Christmas story of the “wise men from the East” aspious legend. Matthew’s gospel offers few details, but imaginative Christians filled out the storyearly on, giving us the three kings guided by a magical star who join the adoring shepherds in everyChristmas crèche. For many scholars, then, there is no reason to take the gospel story seriously.But are they right? Are the wise men no more than a poetic fancy? In an astonishing feat of detectivework, Dwight Longenecker makes a powerful case that the visit of the Magi to Bethlehem reallyhappened. Piecing together the evidence from biblical studies, history, archeology, and astronomy,he goes further, uncovering where they came from, why they came, and what might have happenedto them after eluding the murderous King Herod.In the process, he provides a fascinating view of thetime which Jesus Christ chose to enter the world.

HumilityI was thinking of St. Benedict’s Steps to Humility while observing the sisters andFr. Ben during the retreat. These steps were the foundational interior principals for monastic life. I think with some qualifications we can all integrate them into

our life, although they are so countercultural and challenging for us to accept.

Twelve Steps to HumilityStep 1: When one consciously obeys all ofGod’s commandments, never ignoring themby always holding within himself a fear ofGod in his heart.Step 2: When one thinks not about pleasinghimself but instead following the injunctionof the Lord.Step 3: When out of love of God, oneobediently submits to a superior inimitation of the Lord.Step 4: When one, under obedience,patiently and quietly endures all thingsthat are inflicted on him. It should makeno difference whether the trials arepainful, unjust or even completely beyondhis understanding; he should neither tirenor give up.Step 5: When one humbly discloses to hissuperior all the evil thoughts in his heart,as well as those faults and evil acts he hasactually committed.Step 6: One must without qualms accept allthat is crude and harsh; at all times heconsiders himself a poor and worthlessworkman.Step 7: When one not only confesses that heis an inferior and common wretch, butbelieves it to his very core. He must bewilling to humble himself.Step 8: When one does only that which isdemanded by the common rule of hisseniors.Step 9: When one, practicing silence, onlyspeaks when asked a question.Step 10: When one restrains himself fromundue laughter and frivolity.Step 11: One must speak gently, withoutjests, but simply, seriously, tersely,rationally and softly.Step 12: Attained only when one can at alltimes show humility not only in hisappearance and actions, but also in hisheart.

Discovering the

SAINTS

St. Basil the Great

Basil was on his way to becoming a famous teacher whenhe decided to begin a religious life of gospel poverty.After studying various modes of religious life, hefounded what was probably the first monastery in AsiaMinor. He is to monks of the East what Saint Benedict isto the West, and Basil’s principles influence Easternmonasticism today. He was ordained a priest, assistedthe archbishop of Caesarea–now southeasternTurkey–and ultimately became archbishop himself, inspite of opposition from some of the bishops under him, probably because theyforesaw coming reforms. Arianism, one of the most damaging heresies in the historyof the Church which denied the divinity of Christ, was at its height. Emperor Valens

persecuted orthodox believers, and put great pressure on Basil to remain silent and admit the heretics to communion. Basilremained firm, and Valens backed down. But trouble remained. When the great Saint Athanasius died, the mantle ofdefender of the faith against Arianism fell upon Basil. He strove mightily to unite and rally his fellow Catholics who werecrushed by tyranny and torn by internal dissension. He was misunderstood, misrepresented, accused of heresy and ambition.Even appeals to the pope brought no response. “For my sins I seem to be unsuccessful in everything.” Basil was tireless inpastoral care. He preached twice a day to huge crowds, built a hospital that was called a wonder of the world—as a youth hehad organized famine relief and worked in a soup kitchen himself—and fought the prostitution business. Basil was bestknown as an orator. Though not recognized greatly in his lifetime, his writings rightly place him among the great teachers ofthe Church. Seventy-two years after his death, the Council of Chalcedon described him as “the great Basil, minister of gracewho has expounded the truth to the whole earth.” -Excerpted and adapted from http://www.franciscanmedia.org
