OThe new decade starts with a severe economic crisis, but also with the hope that investments in new green and climate-friendly technologies and closer European cooperation will bring lasting growth and welfare.

Candidate To Accession

O To enter, a candidate must satisfy the three Copenhagen criteria: include and apply EU law (acquis communautaire) in its own legal system, show that you have stable institutions guaranteeing democracy, the rule of law, rights human and minority protection, and maintain a stable market economy and viable.

In early 2010 there were several candidates:

O Turkey applied for membership in 1987, although no date has yet been set to take place in joining.

O Negotiations with Croatia and Macedonia began in 2005.

O Other Western Balkan countries, including Albania, or which were once part of Yugoslavia: Bosnia and Herzegovina, Montenegro and Serbia have applied for membership.

O In 2009 he applied Iceland.

OThe Regional Policy aims to bring the standard of living and development of the poorest regions of the richest, and has been at the heart of EU policy since its inception. Around one third of the EU budget is devoted to these purposes. His current goals are threefold: convergence, competitiveness and cooperation.

The Great Internal Contrasts

O The convergence objective aims to promote growth and employment in the less developed regions (with a GDP below 75% of the EU average). 81.5% of the regional policy budget will be allocated to the convergence of the new Member States.

O The regional competitiveness and employment is designed to help the richer Member States so as to tackle the economic and social change, globalization and the transition to an information society. This objective will be allocated 16% of the regional budget.

OThe European territorial cooperation objective is to promote common solutions between at least two member countries in several areas: urban, rural and coastal economic and business research, integrated water management ... Assumes 2.5% of the budget.
