- Before chocolate was considered a sweet treat, chocolate was a spicy drink, drunk by such early civilizations as the Mayans and Aztecs.
3. The first uses of the cacao bean are seen at the height of the Mayan civilization (250-900 A.D.). 4. Chocolate was used as a form of money in the Aztec civilization. 5. It was combined with water, chili, peppers, and cornmeal and drank rather than eaten.
