The Origins of Basketball

Canadian P.E. coach in a YMCA in Springfield, Massachusetts created the game in the winter of 1891.

Only passing and shooting allowed into a ten foot tall basket until dribbling was introduced in the fifties. Then the three point line was introduced in 1979 for the NBA and 1986 for the NCAA. Also dunking went away from 1967-1976 because of Lew Alcindor’s complete dominance. The prohibition of dunking was sometimes called the Lew Alcindor rule.

In 1892 the first game was played with nine players, and in 1893 it was introduced into a few high schools and colleges.
