New From Moana Landscape & Design Services: Leslie Richardson, Seasonal Container Specialist will be managing our new our Seasonal Container & Bedding Services. She will work with both commercial and residential clients to create stunning seasonal containers and planting beds designed for our climate. Leslie has gardened in Vermont, Pennsylvania and Nevada. She has extensive experience in residential landscaping where she designed, installed and maintained container plantings, seasonal displays and perennial gardens. She is a master gardener and received her training in both floral design and horticulture from Longwood Gardens. Containers are her specialty. Leslie loves trying out new plant combinations and getting people excited about their outdoor spaces. You can see samples of her work at our Moana Lane store, on the corner Moana and Lakeside and at the entrance of our Landscape & Design Center. October Bird of the Month: House Sparrow House Sparrows can be found just about anywhere there are people - in urban areas, suburban settings, farms and fields - except for Alaska and far northern Canada. Many people refer to them (and other small nondescript song birds) as LBJ's (little brown jobs). House Sparrows are not members of the sparrow family and a close look will show the difference in body size and shape from White-crowned Sparrows, Song Sparrows, Spotted Towhee and others. They were brought to America and first released in Brooklyn in 1851. There were two other releases in the western United States in the 1870's, which aided the bird's spread in the West.

Get Your Farmer On! Garlic anyone? Now is the time to plant! We have freshly dug organic Spanish rojo hard neck garlic in stock. This crop is easy just separate the head of garlic into individual cloves and plant 3-4 inches apart, 2 inches deep with the tip of the clove pointed up in the garden or a pot. Next July you will have plants that are ready to harvest, braid and cook with.
There is still time to plant spinach, lettuce, kale, carrots and radishes for a quick harvest on some of these crops in 30 days or less. If you didn't get a garden in use the beautiful fall weather to pick a spot and start amending your soil with compost. Cover up the spot after amending with THICK plastic that will keep the weed seeds down and act as a
solar blanket to warm up the soil for earlier spring planting. You may also plant a cover crop that can be turned over (this is not the easiest task and takes a while to break apart the cover crop back into the soil so you can plant in it.) in the spring to add nutrients directly to the soil.

October Seminars & Meetings: October 5: Herbs for Teas and Cuisine to Grow Indoors Over WinterBack by popular demand is local herb expert Kim Powers. This seminar will focus on herbs that you grow indoors successfully. Kim will share her favorites - what to do with them along with growing tips. And how exciting to pick your own lemons and limes! Join Jon Bruyn (Moana Nursery plant doctor and successful northern Nevada citrus grower) to learn how easy it is to successfully grow citrus indoors. He will explain what conditions are necessary (sunlight, temperature, etc.) and share tips to ensure a healthy plant and plentiful harvest. October 26: Selecting, Planting and Caring for Trees in Northern NevadaSearching for that perfect tree? Jon Bruyn, certified arborist and Moana Nursery plant doctor will discuss how to select a tree, by size, shape, environment and particular attributes.Learn about new introductions for the upcoming 2014 season. After you select your tree, you will learn how to properly plant it and care for it. Imagine being able to have the right tree in the right place, that will live a long and trouble-free life.
