Who do you think qualifies as a
hero? Who are the heroes in your
life? Why?
Beowulf Unit Objectives
Students will be able to recognize the formula for a heroic journey in
multiple works. They will also be able to clearly define what makes a literary
hero and be able to identify whether a work contains a heroic journey. At
the end of the unit, students will be able to demonstrate knowledge for the
following essential questions:
What elements make Beowulf an epic hero and how is the pattern of the Hero’s
Journey represented by various cultures around the world in various time periods?
How has Germanic culture influenced literature and cultural values, including the importance of weapons and attitudes about life, death, and material possessions.
How have different religions influenced literature and cultural values?
